Disenchanted Blue Jays Fan Looking For A New Team
I'm a disenchanted Toronto Blue Jays Fan, looking for a new team. Ownership decisions and a general aimlessness in the direction of the team has caused me to consider abandoning the Jays after 25 years of cheering for them.
My search has narrowed to the Detroit Tigers, St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers, and your Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
I am looking for a MLB team that has ownership committed to winning, a group of players worth cheering for, and a reasonable shot at competing for the playoffs sometime in the next 10 years.
Convince me (with defensible reasons) why I should join you. Go!
EDIT: You have an automatic leg up on the Tigers, Cardinals and Dodgers because those boards won't let me participate for 2 days. So that's 2 freebie days where I'm all ears for the Angels only.
This Fan-Post is authored by an independent fan. Tell us what you think and how you feel.

If I was in your position
I would just narrow down your choices to the Cardinals and the Angels. Tigers are choke artists and the Dodgers ownership is in jeopardy because of the divorce.

Being choke artists doesn’t automatically eliminate the team from contention. I’m not simply looking for a good team to cheer for. The Dodgers ownership comment is a valid point though.
Being a resident of London, Ontario, however, the Tigers are by far the closest geographical team, and the team I would be able to see live the most often.
by Jevant on Nov 5, 2009 10:08 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
The Tigers have not put a living product on the field but one time in the past 20 years, and that was back in 1996.
So I am not sure where you get the notion that you will get to see them live, often.
The Angels, on the other hand, are the winningest team in baseball over the past 5 or 6 years. Natioanally recognized as having the best owner in baseball, the best sports franchise in North America, and the best fan experience of any baseball park. I encourage you to look around here. Read the studies on the farm system and the prospects, look at the profiles of the all-time franchise players, search out the occasional posts on the Halos .600 winning percentages.
As for hanging with us here, give the place some time. The range of members here run the gamut. This is not a site for sabremetrics gluttony, although there is a healthy respect for data and we are not rubes. We have the weepy and the ferocious, the young and the old, the mindful and the mindless, the arrogant and the ignorant. It is a vibrant place and, perhaps because of that vibrancy, it is looked down upon by our competitors (fans from other teams, and fans from other Angels sites). But there is a raw honesty here, a willingness to stare into the abyss of a lot of controversial issues that, traditionally, AYSO mom types would rather hide with aphorisms of sportmanship while handing out orange slices and capri sun packets. We rouse a lot of rabble, and it keeps the joint jumping.
And I defy you to find any other sport community that managed the kind of internet traffic that the Angels fans generated here during the 2009 post-season. 3500 to 7000 posts per game thread!! That is a passionate fan base, and a reflection of the value that being a fan of this team brings to your baseball experience.

If you've paid attention at all,
you’d know that the Angels already far exceed your requirements for support (owner committed to winning, reasonable chance of making the playoffs in the next 10 years, group of guys worth cheering for).
Many of the contributors to this site have remained fans through the worst of times. We didn’t abandon our team even after the debacles of ’86 and ’95, through the playoff drought from ’86 to 2002, and so much more. We collectively had our hearts torn out after the death of Nick Adenhart.
So before I go any further, convince me why you aren’t a bandwagon fan in waiting.
by sothball on Nov 5, 2009 9:53 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
Fair enough
I had a long response typed out, and then accidentally closed the page.
First paragraph: The reason I have narrowed it to 4 teams is because those teams meet those requirements, at least as far as I have been able to tell without discussing the matter with any committed fans of theirs. That’s part of the reason why I’m here.
Second paragraph: I’ve been a rabid Jays fan since I was born. That includes 1994-2009. If cheering for that collection of teams doesn’t show some loyalty, I’m not sure what else would.
Bandwagon fan? The only reason I have ever considering changing fandom is when the ownership sells out the team. That is what is happening to the Jays. I cheered during the Ash years. I cheered during the Riccardi years. But Ted Rogers has died, and his corporation has decided to turn the team into a business, only interested in the bottom line. There is no plan, no direction, and no intention of either rebuilding or retooling. Just stagnant inaction.
Regrettably, I lost the rest of my response to the comment. But I hope that gives you enough.

As I wrote above,
there are many good reasons to support the Angels, especially since they meet the criteria you established. There are many, many other reasons though beyond winning/losing.
For example, were you aware ESPN Magazine rated 121 sports franchises on the overall fan experience, and they rated the Angels #1 this year? The results were published in August (?). It’s a good read on a part of how Arte Moreno has transformed the entire organization.
The Angels have the best owner, the best manager, and one of the best GM’s in baseball. Others have provided excellent reasons below to support the Angels. If I were “shopping” for a new team, I couldn’t go wrong with selecting the Angels.

I'm not sure where you're from
But if you ever get a chance next season, go to an Angels home game. You really can’t beat the California sun and a classy winning ballclub in a modern ballpark. I don’t recommend becoming a Dodger fan, because Dodger games are more scary than fun. The Tigers and Cardinals have good fanbases, but the Tigers do choke more often than not, and the Cards… well really can’t say too much, they’re a good organization too.
But the Halos are who you should look to for a new team. They are young, talented, and have the best owner (Arte Moreno – google him) in sports. Not to mention, ESPN ranked the Angels number 1 in all of American sports (MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL) in fan experience and value. If you’re a family man, the Angels cater to the kids more than the adults! Sundays are “Family Sundays” at the Big A, with plenty of fun activities for the kids to do in Right Field, not to mention that kids run the bases after every Sunday home game.
If you want a team that’s going in the right direction (6 postseason appearances in the last 8 years), has some young talent to build around (Jered Weaver, Kendry Morales, Erick Aybar, Howie Kendrick, Ervin Santana…etc.), has the best manager in the AL (Mike Scioscia 2002/2009 Manager of the Year), and has THE MAN Torii Hunter patrolling CF, then come to the Halos.
Dodgers, Cardinals, Tigers, they all have history, great history. The Angels are writing their great history now. These are the best years of Angels Baseball ever. If you want to be a part of history, now is the time to become an Angels fan.
This should be a classic ALCS. Lets go Halos!

DirecTv and MLB.TV
I am in Seattle and have been since 1994. I fly down 2-3 times a season to watch in person. Did not miss a home playoff game in Ana this year and fly down every year for the playoffs…now this is tradition!
I watch comfortably from the living room most of the time or anywhere with the laptop.
One question, besides bringing Doc with ya…any chance you have any decent announcers you can bring with you too? We do have one deficiency…
PS…as WiHaloFan says below, how can you truly change? I have tried to root for the M’s just a little when they are not playing the Angels and I have tried to root for the Seachickens too, but I just can’t do it. The heart won’t allow this!

A true fan sticks with their team even through the shitty times. I know it can be frustrating, but think how satisfying it’ll be when they battle back and once again become the team you used to love. You’ll be able to say, “I was a fan even when they SUCKED”

Dont be a bandwagon fan, dude. Stick with your team. It will make winning, when it does come (and it will!) all that much better. You’d feel like a FOOL if 10 years down the line if the Jays were doing awesome but you had renounced them.
When I was growing up the Jays were KICKING ASS. I had to watch Joe Carter win you a World Series ring while I rooted for dudes by the name of Luis Sojo and Mike Fitzgerald. Who??? Exactly.
Its only been sixteen years since you last won a World Series…BACK TO BACK World Series I might add. And now that Riccardi is out, you might start seeing some good decisions being made by the FO.
Aaron Hill, Halladay, Travis Snider….you got some good players on that team. In addition, your organization has a history of winning. Stick to your guns. Stay a Blue Jay fan.

Why the hell wouldn't we be trying to welcome all interested parties
to become Halo supporters? It seems pretty stupid to rail against the unnatural quantities of media love that befall east coast teams, and then reject an eastern fan who desires to become one of us. Posts here advocate that Jevant stick with his hometown team, as if fate of birth has anything to do with it.
When I was a toddler, I was a Rams fan, just like everybody else in my extended household (10 people strong). Then I became iconoclastic and got a slight bit interested in the Chiefs (cool unis). So, interested in the Chiefs, I sat mesmerized by The Longest Game and discovered the Miami Dolphins. They became my team immediately. The next season the household was 9 Rams fans, 1 Dolphins fan. Guess whose side of the household went undefeated and picked up their first Super Bowl? That season, however, introduced me to the AFC East. The Patriots unis were even cooler than the Cheifs. They totally sucked, but I was intrigued. Then they drafted Sam Cunningham out of USC in 1973, and I made my lifelong commitment. I don’t look at it as abandoning my Rams, or turning my back on my Chiefs, or jumping on some Miami bandwagon. I look at it as my journey to my Pats.
As for the Angels, I did not have any favorite baseball team until they moved next door to me. There was no hometown OC baseball team for me to be born into. Hell, as a 9 year old left fielder for the North Sunrise Little League AA Pirates, I figured maybe the Pirates should be my team. But they were not purple, like my cap and shirt (with the “Lock and Key” Hardware Store ad ironed onto the back as our sponsor!)
So, Jevant, get your ass over here and learn yourself some Halo History. You gotta lot of catching up to do, and we only have a few months to do it. I, for one, welcome the new addition!

This team is the greatest. We don’t have great history like some other of the teams but we do have a great future upon us. If you want a team with no controversy, no prima donnas, a scrappy team, with the best owner you got the Angels my friend. If you ever watch a Angel game you will get hooked. I got my wife, best friend and many others liking the Angels. This is a great team. Going to a Angel game is unbelievable. So I welcome you my friend, you will love this team!

Absolutely still reading
Wasn’t around my computer for a while. I’ll certainly be responding to comments over the course of the day…regrettably, sometimes work does get in the way!

Ooooh. Bad sign.
You are going to have to get your priorities straight.
I wonder what John Lackey must think about how long Sosh left Juan Rivera in the playoff lineup?

FELLOW CANADIAN!
I’m a transplanted Canadian. I grew up in Cochrane Ontario, lived in Hornepayne ontario, and moved to California in ’88, and was a DIE hard blue Jays fan.
Ironically, my Angel fandom started because of a Canadian, too. More on a that in a second.
Joe Carters Homerun? Juan Guzman’s Slider? Paul Molitor? Fred McGriff, John Olerud, Kelly Gruber, Dave Stieb, Dave Stewart, David Cone (I’m skipping Clemens on purpose), Tony Fernandez, Dave Winfield, you name it, i was a HUGE Jays fan. I drove around my neighborhood in So Cal – - 16 years old – - screaming out my windows when they won the world series.
But in 89, I had gone to an Angels game. My dads company had season tickets, front row, first base side, and I was reading the program that day. Turns out a pitcher named Kirk McKaskill was from Kapuskasing ontario.
KAPUSKASING? are you #$*( KIDDING me? I know where that is, hell, when I lived in Hornepayne, that was the big city.
So he was running laps around the track, warming up before the game. The program that day even had his hockey card from when he was a kid as the promotional insert. So I yell to him that I’m from Kap – - and he stopped and came over.
I admitted I wasn’t FROM Kap, but Hornepayne and he laughed ad said he didn’t think anyone was from there. He was gracious, friendly, and literally signed EVERYTHING I had that day, including the hockey card insert.
From that moment on? The Angels were my team.
Joe Carters Home run was my favorite moment in sports until 2002.
The one night, living in the guest house at my parents place (who they bought from Tony Tavares, by the way, the old Angels and Ducks GM under Disney) I saw Spezio hit that home run. Tears.
Joy.
Elation.
Bunch of friends and I piled into my truck and raced to the stadium, just to be near it. it was electric.
Joe’s always number 2, but the Angels, they’re number 1. Period.
It’s literally the best franchise for fans in all of sports. Come on over to the Red Side, You won’t be disappointed.

Oh Hey...You're from london Ontario?
Just an extra shout out? Victoria Park in London is the home of a Tank called the Holy ROller – - My grandfathers tank through many a skirmish w/ the First Hussars in WWII. Yep, that was his tank.
:) Say hi for me next time you drive by…

Stick with your team.
Or you could do my friends do. They root for the worst teams in baseball. They know they try their hardest, they just never win. It’s more fun than rooting for a team everybody expects to win (so I’m told).
Yes I'm talking to myself. Who else would I trust?

Here's some reasons:
1) We are the only team out of the ones you mentioned that stands any chance of consistently defeating the Red Sox and Yankees, both of which I’m assuming you hate because of being a Jays fan. We were more competitive against NY than the Phillies. We had 2 extra inning games and 3 of the other 4 were save situations.
2) Arte Moreno and Reagins make big moves. Franchise value has almost tripled since Arte bought the team.
3) The Dodgers aren’t going anywhere now thanks to the McCourts and the fact that Manny picked up his $20 million option because he knows he’s never going to get close to that amount every again after the events of his 2009 career.
4) The Tigers aren’t consistent enough. And Miguel Cabrera proved himself to be an irresponsible d-bag at the end of this season.
5) The Cardinals might not be good after 2010. Pujols will be a FA and Holliday might be gone this winter. I don’t know what they’d do to replace them.
That ought to do it I’d say.

lol, look at it this way… we are essentially the braves of the 90’s. we are always gonna be in the postseason, but more often than not, our hearts get broken in the postseason.
At least everyyear we can go back to thinking that this year will be different.
Also, IMO aside from the phillies and giants (only when lincecum is on the mound) the NL is terrible to watch, at any rate not as fun as watching Mice Tits come up with clutch hits, and Vlade swinging at everything withing 20 feet of the plate
In Kobe we trust!

When you decide
You should post your decision on the blogs and explain your thought process. I enjoyed reading the other blogs reactions and although I find some of them comically misrepresenting us (MIDWEST BIAS!) it is an interesting argument to see put forth by the fans.
Whatever team you land on I hope you follow with the same passion that you had for the Blue Jays.
It isn't that I hate Boston, just that I hate Bostonians.
