What to do if we don't re-sign Lackey
Just curious what is running through the great baseball minds of the HalosHeaven community in regards to the John Lackey situation. Personally, I'd like to re-sign him, as I feel his is the best free agent starter out there. We all know how he feels about playing for a team with a "better offense," among other financial issues.
So my question to you is what happens if we do not re-sign Big Thunder?
The free agent market for starting pitching doesn't look great. Every option is essentially either a senior citizen or injury prone. Dumping the farm in a trade doesn't sound like a stellar idea either. And our in-house options are lackluster. So . . . what does the Ninja do if he finds himself in this situation?
FYI: I'm not interested in seeing a list of the players who, in your opinion, should make up the starting lineup, starting staff, and bullpen next season (and I think I speak for a lot of us around here). That's what 3/4 of every other off-season fanpost are for.
This Fan-Post is authored by an independent fan. Tell us what you think and how you feel.

Well...
Lackey wasn’t getting any love earlier in the year because he “wasn’t dominating in the postseason” and his injury to start the season. Now everyone is screaming sign him, we can still win without him, but he is a very valuable piece to this organization.
1. Roy Halladay, I dont think It would be too much of a blow if we trade for him. They are going to want SP for sure among other ML ready players. Can you imagine if this dude gets traded to the Cards!
2. Derek Lowe, not the ace he used to be, but I would take Lowe in a pitcher friendly stadium. And Postseason experience can’t hurt.
3. Rich Harden, the dude is Mr. Glass, but if we can get 25 regular season starts from him I’d be happy.
4. Ben Sheets, how can you say no to a healthy Ben Sheets? But can he come back from his torn flexor tendon injury?
5. Eric Bedard, but I doubt he can stay healthy for a full season. :(
6. Justin Duchsherer, is he depressed because he plays with the A’s?
7. Javier Vazquez, the Braves might be looking to trade one of their SP. We can hook them up with GMJ and Rivera.
8. Aaron Harang, FTW?
9. In house options include Mosely, O’Sully, Palmer.

Javier Vazquez
He won’t play for a team west of the Rockies. It is actually in his contract.

He wants to stay close to his family
As I recall, they live in Puerto Rico. His goal is to keep the plane flight from his team city to San Juan to a minimum. Any team which has had him has lived with that same restriction in the contract, so Chicago is as far west as he has been based.

My error
I thought the clause was in the Yankee contract, but it was in the extension he signed with the White Sox, after they acquired him from the Dbacks.
It states he can veto any trade to an NL West or AL West team.

I think if there was a team in the western divisions that he'd play for
It would be the Angels. Supposedly the Bravos want a power hitter like Michael Cuddyer. Well, Juan Rivera isn’t that far behind. Throw in a mid grade prospect and convince Vazquez to come west and we might have a deal. Financially, we’d take on about $7 mil in salary (2010: Rivera: $4.25M, Vazquez: $11.5M), and Vazquez is a free agent after next year. SenorChuckles has it right on, and even though this isn’t a great free agent class, the Angels have the depth to navigate the loss of Rivera offensively. By no means is this a perfect trade, but the chance to acquire decent pitching shouldn’t be ignored.
Kenshin Kawakami may be another option, even though he didn’t light up the NL this year. I’d stay far far away from Derek Lowe ($15M annually) and the Braves won’t trade Jurrjens just yet (Boras warning!!!).

Huh?!?
Throw in a mid grade prospect and convince Vazquez to come west and we might have a deal.
How? Through kidnapping or extortion? I don’t think you understand the intent of the no-trade clause Vazquez has. This isn’t something frivolous, like “no brown M&Ms in the backstage candy dish”, but rather the expressed desire of a player not to be located more than a few hours by airplane from where his family lives. He hated being as far away from Puerto Rico as Phoenix, and so had that clause placed into his contract extension signed with the White Sox.
Most players who request a limited no-trade clause do so to prevent being traded to a last-place team or loser franchise. Vazquez, instead, wants only to never be stationed in a franchise in the NL West or AL West. That is a pretty powerful and easily understood message he is sending.
The Angels aren’t going to cajole him into changing his mind.

I'm just saying that no-trade clauses aren't absolute. They can be waived.
Javy is older now, his career has taken him to a number of places, and the Angels organization has a lot of respect within the industry. I also said ***IF*** there was a team in the west that he’d play for, it would be the Angels. I would never doubt the sway of Arte Moreno, Tony Reagins, and Mike Scioscia.

I saw the **IF**
But you’re trivializing his desire as if it was some whim. The man is devoted to his family and felt strongly enough about it to write a protection into his contract which would keep him from being traded to the AL West or NL West.
That’s pretty definite. It wouldn’t matter what Arte or the rest said, unless it was a pledge to move the franchise to Orlando by Opening Day.

GK
I’m not trivializing anything. This is the hot stove. Its the season for rumors, and we have seen a number of no trade clauses voided in recent history. Jim Thome voided his to come to LA for the stretch run. Billy Wagner voided his to go to the Red Sox. Jake Peavy voided his to go to the White Sox. Strange things happen, and unless you’re on Javier Vazquez’s payroll, you know the same as the rest of us: he has a no trade clause to the AL & NL West.
He may never leave Atlanta should they sign him to an extension. Says Javy: “I’ve never been a free agent. … I’ve never really chosen a place myself. But definitely Atlanta was always a place I was interested in playing. So far I think I’ve had a pretty good career. And we’ll see what happens.” (Fanhouse).

I suppose so
It’s true that we have no way of knowing what will happen for sure.
In that spirit, we can also look forward to the possibility that the Jays will take Willits for Halladay, straight up. After all, probable doesn’t matter, only possible, right?

GMJ & Rivera?
Why would ATL want to outfielders? Not a wise trade on thier part.
I still think a package deal for Arroyo is our best bet if we lose Lackey.

The Braves are pretty much set at 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, and C
their outfield is alright but Rivera and GMJ would be upgrades over Anderson, Church, Diaz, and McLouth.

They would want two OF because their OF is thin.

How does signing him help with losing Lackey. Lackey is a starter, Putz is a reliever.

Bengie couldn’t move behind the plate. Still can’t. His defensive value is toast. He still slugs OK (not checking numbers, so don’t shout if I am wrong) but he is a mess of a catcher now.

by Baylorsgroove on Nov 7, 2009 7:09 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
He wasn't interested in "2 more years"
He signed for four plus an option.
Teams don’t have the luxury of cherry-picking the number of years they want the player in free agency.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals just paid him $12M to occupy their DL for the entire season.
McPherson was the correct play. It is just unfortunate his back was so fragile.

Seattle has a lot of salary $$ coming off the books this season
Lackey will get his money. If Arte won’t pay him, Ninja better have a very capable “Plan B” ready. You don’t replace the ace of the staff with a Bell / SOS / Palmer trifecta.
by mustard_man on Nov 10, 2009 4:31 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
Doubtful he'd sign with Seattle
At the end of the day, Lackey wants to go with a winner, a team with a realistic chance of making the postseason. Seattle is in the midst of a rebuilding, trying to recover from the bad contracts and trades issued during the prior regime and a failure of some touted kids to deliver.
Seattle is better off taking all that “saved” money and throwing it at Felix to extend him past 2011. Otherwise, they’ll have to trade him, leaving the ace of the staff as Carlos Siva, and his deal doesn’t end until 2012.
