Vladdy was great at his autograph signing
There was a great turnout for the Vladimir Guerrero signing this past weekend. For all of you Vladdy haters that complain that he is all about the money or that he is not personal with Angels fans, you could not be more wrong.
Big Daddy Vladdy had no problem with hand shakes, high fives and fist bumps. But my greatest moment was when my 3 year old son "who adores Guerrero" went to get his autograph and he says hi. Also when we were done he gives him a five and waves and says goodbye.
This may not seem like much to some people, but a day later my son still is as excited as when it happened and talks about it to whoever will listen. It was a moment that my son will probably never forget. That is what this game is all about making memories that last forever.

Then you've never read a MH252525 post
he’s clearly schizophrenic.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
I claim no part or ownership

Good things
I don’t like some things I’ve heard about Vlad in the past, esp. towards kids, but his treatment of your son definitely redeems that.

I'd like to think that a superstar like Vlad
No matter the money, would high-five an enthusiastic 3-year-old who worships him, don’t you think?

The people who bitch that the Angels need to sign top-tier talent
are the ones who bitch when top tier-talen charges for the extras. … guess what, this is how top tier talent rolls.
The attitude that Vladdy and any big Angels stars should be making free appearances is about the only thing LEFT OVER from the way we California/Anaheim Angels fans used to be: A locals rule attitude in the (3/4 empty) stands… but then we had a chance to grab the brass ring and be a top tier franchise… and people still whine about two things: they want season seat prices to never go up and the greatest players on earth to make free public appearances for them depsite players in every other major media market charging.
WAHHHHHHH we wanna be number one but pay for number twenty nine WEEEEEE‘RE special, Arte, We’re Special Vladdy, fuck you if you don’t change our diapers…..

If any player wants to appear outside of the stadium for a fee
more power to them. What people are bitching about with Vladdy is that while 99% of the current Angels sign autographs at the stadium and at spring training, VLAD does not. That is the problem with Vlad.
Trust me, I had other Angel players and staff tell me in spring training in 2007 “still waiting for Vlad to sign…” and “good luck”. I had others tell me straight up that he normally only signs for money (obviously not at the stadium). Some of these players went as far as to tell me where to wait for him for the best chances of getting an autograph.
Keep in mind that the entire spring training with the exception of 7 or 8 days, I was there with my 4 year old son who loves Vlad. On top of that, I have been to at least 80 home games and never once did I see Vlad sign anything.
I have no problem with Vlad signing for money Outside of the stadium. Of course he was nice at this event. He was getting Paid!

Maybe if you held up a fistful of $20 dollar bills, you would have had better luck getting
that autograph from Vlad for your little boy.

Otherwise, why do you care?

Hmmmmm why do I care?
Me and my 4 year old son were the only people around one morning at spring training when Vlad was walking across the parking lot in uniform from one playing field to Diablo stadium when my son asked him for an autograph. Vlad told my son “Later”. Later that day we were 2 out of maybe a dozen people watching all the outfielders take bp. Vlad walked right past my son and never signed anything. He continued to ignore my son and me for the entire spring training that year and that was well over 20 days. Vlad can lie to me as an adult, but as an adult he had no business lying to my yound son. Again I will make the point that 99% of the team knew who we were by the end of spring training and most of the players who would take the time to come over to talk to my boys did make comments like “still no Vlad autographs”. There were other comments made as well.

So you believe he owed you an autograph?
Your statement is that his obligation was to sign a piece of paper?

actually it was a baseball.
and….when a 4 year old child looks up to an adult with a pen and baseball in his hands and asks that adult, “Vladdy, will you please sign my baseball” and he responds to my son….“Later”, Yes I do believe it is a grown man’s obligation to honor his word to my son. I never asked Vlad anything, my son politely did all the talking.
Call me Crazy.

It doesn't happen often, but I agree with Dono on this one.
George, put yourself in Vlad’s position. If you were a major league baseball player, and a 4-year old asked you for an autograph, would you say no? My impression of you is you’re a good guy and would sign, but ask yourself “why?”. Why would you sign the autograph? Because it’s the right thing to do. I can understand not signing for the 40 year old guy with 6 cards, 4 baseballs and a stack of pictures, but a 4-year old?
I’m not saying signing is part of his job (although I do think it is), but why say no? Is the 10 minutes out of your life too much to ask?
Just to put a cynical spin on this...
It is not beyond reason to realize that some 40-year old guys stalk ST games with 6 cards, 4 baseballs and a stack of pictures in their jacket, and push their 4 year old son out in front of a high-value target athlete with the pen.
Not saying that is Dono, but I am saying that Vlad – as with any major athletic figure – has probably seen more than his fair share of unfortunate assaults on his person by adults wanting a piece of him for their own financial gain, and may have long lost the ability to distinguish betwen the Donos and the pimps.
Had I owned the Pittsburgh Pirates, I could have saved America.
Its not an obligation.
But expect to be called a dickhead if you act like a dickhead.
Not sure what is so hard to understand about that one.

You're right, there was only a handjob involved.

Vlad and Kids- -
I actually met Vladdy after a game- – randomly – - two years ago. My son and I were in Bev Mo after the game pickingup some “soda” for a BBQ at my folks place – -and Vlad walked in. My son was WEARING his Guerrero Jersey, ad Vlad was more than gracious.
My son was speechless, I nervously said Hi and introduced my son, showed him the #27 on his back, and he not only got down and greeted my son, but posed for TWO pictures w/ my fam – - my cousin was in town from Canada and had never been to a ballgame before that day and Vlad took pics w/ me and my son AND my cousin – - she’s an Angels fan for life now – - Class act all the way. great with the kids, really humble, but friendly, and just an all around GREAT guy.
Self-realization. I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates, who said, "I drank what?"

great story and
the exception to the majority of fans experience with Vlad.
Very cool to read about Vlad. Maybe he is just shy in the stadium and spring training. He obviously opens up when he’s getting paid to show up to autograph signing events outside the stadium and for the randomly lucky fan who runs into him outside the stadium.

All I want to know,
is what alcohol does The Impaler prefer?
Had I owned the Pittsburgh Pirates, I could have saved America.
I would have paid the money
if I were getting Vladdy’s autograph for my kid, if I had one.
#34, never forget.
I would have adopted a kid and paid the money
if it means I can see Vladdy in person, shake his hands, and get his autograph.

Here is the thing about ignorant people, they always act like they know what they are talking about when they don’t. Real baseball fans know why players of vlad’s status charge for autographs and don’t complain about it but apparently what these people above are complaining about didn’t know is that after taxes Vlad donated the money to a family shelter in Upland!! He doesn’t need the money people…get real. To the people that came out on Saturday, thanks it was a great event and this is for you!!

I appreciated seeing Vlad, and I agree with all of the positives about the man.
But:
1. Michael works at the store, or that’s the way it seemed by looking at him when I was there. So, of course, he’d get to play catch.
2. I was a tad bit disappointed that you (I think that was you there) mentioned that we could not take pictures. I had planned to get a shot of my kids smiling in front of Vlad while he was signing our baseball. But, I followed the rules and took no photos.
I love this team.

True that
I know you’re being snarky, but stopping to pose for photos slows the process down by minutes, which limits the number of paying customers who can be served.
The net result is, less money for charity.

I, for one, would have appreciated knowing earlier in this conversation that you have a vested interest in this event.
I had my suspicions, but knowing for certain would have helped me temper your comments such as the above, about “ignorant people” with whom you disagree.
Had I owned the Pittsburgh Pirates, I could have saved America.
We drove past Vlad's house one day
on the way to a client meeting and he was outside and I yelled his name and gave him the thumbs-up out the window and he smiled and waved back.
No autograph, though.

My money is on...
Captain Morgan, Sailor Jerry, or some other type of rum as far as the alcohol that Vlad prefers.
He is from the Caribbean afterall, which is the original home piracy and rum and all that good stuff…
