Should The Angels Re-Sign Vlad?

That's a toughie. I've always considered him an Angel

Star-divide

Let's face it, Vlad isn't exactly young anymore, and his injuries mean him and his awsome arm can't play Right-Field. He want's to play Right-Field, but I don't think he can. He had a very good postseason, probably his best postseason ever. There are some good power hitters on the free-agent market, like Bay, Delgado, Thome, and others. Should the Angels Re-Sign Vlad? What do you think?

This Fan-Post is authored by an independent fan. Tell us what you think and how you feel.

i think they should

i don’t believe this past year was a good representation of what he can still contribute. he was clearly not himself this year. but her turned it on in the postseason. small sample size? yes. but i think it was telling enough. i believe vlad is still capable of putting up numbers similar to what he did in ‘08. 27 home runs, .303 batting average, 91 runs batted in…. i’d take that.

He would come back if no one believes he can play RF.

Define "decent"

I'd rather DH Napoli and let Abreu play RF.

No matter what happens from here on, it has been a great season.

by Rally Manatee on Dec 11, 2009 6:29 PM PST up reply actions

I think they'll re-sign Vlad after he's found out nobody wants to sign him to play OF

He’ll get one year plus option, OK money and a chance to make maybe $7M if he hits all the metrics (weighted heavily on games played).

He’ll also do better than he showed for most of 2009.

As a DH obviously, but I’d take him. I’d even be fine with them giving him a 2 year deal similar to Abreu’s.

Mmmm, Delgado could be fun.

Worries me, though, almost just as much. If you’re going to take a gamble on one of those guys, I’d think the smart PR thing to do would be to keep the (former?) face of the franchise and fan favorite.

Vlad is a better hitter than both of them

Besides, injuries are just as much a factor against them as it is for Vlad.

False. Vlad makes more contact. Not necessarily good contact, either.

Look at the career numbers…..

How doyou say Delgado (a guy who hits 270) is better then Vlad who has a record with Rogers Hornsby and Lou Gehrig..

I didn’t see either on the all decade team…

Now Vlad is slowing down but he is far from done.. Who is to say Delgado doesn’t recover from his injuries… ???

by raven191 on Dec 12, 2009 3:38 AM PST up reply actions

Who's to say that Vlad does?

All of these arguments are ridiculous!

Fact is, Delgado had a very, very good year 2 years ago, and he was injured this past year. How many years in a row has Vlad been injured. If Delgado is healthy, I’d take his .270 and 35+ homers, over Vlad’s 90 games and league lead in GIDPs.

Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

Vlad has only missed significant time...

with the Angels last season. He isn’t as fragile as everyone makes him out to be (although it does look painful when he walks/runs). I’m not convinced he’s done playing defense either. He hasn’t played spectacular D buy any means lately, but neither has Abreu.

Who’s to say Vlad can’t come back and play some RF still? I don’t think he can do it everyday, but why couldn’t he do it 2 to 3 times a week? Last year could have been just a fluke. Actually, Vlad seems like a guy who does his worse in a contract year. It happened in 2003 and again last season. Maybe he just is trying to hard during the contract years? I don’t know.

But I would not be surprised if Vlad went out and played 40 or so games in the outfield without injuring himself. I also wouldn’t be surprised if he got hurt doing it! But it’s not like he’s guaranteed to get hurt like everyone makes it seem!

Yes, bringing Vlad back would make me happy.

He had a good postseason (except game 2), and for all his ‘decline’ he still paced out for a above average season. plus he is one of our favorite all time Angels.
Rev ranked him second (or third). ALL TIME .

i would like to see Vlad finish his career as an Angel...

but as a DH only of course… if he didnt work out i think i’d take a shot on Delgado… need another LH bat in the lineup the way things are shaking out

Sorry Vlad, can’t use you in RF anymore. Hopefully he would take a deal like this and retire an Angel.

No other contender has an opening at DH or is willing to play him in RF. I think he comes back unless Reagins finds a better replacement.

Perefect example of no respect for anything the guy has done for the franchise for the 5 plus last year he contributed…He had 2 good playoffs in back 2 back years,

He should not of been put in the OF, but Mike did and it cost him.He also tore his peck throwing a baseball..Had and has nothing to do with his hitting..
He will always be Vlad ,like it or not…
You clearly have a childish vendetta against the franchise player of 5 years..

How can you be sure Delgado will come back from his injuries and be effective..He always hits for a low average…
.
I don’t know what Vlad will do next year,he clearly needs to get in better shape, and accept that he can only DH now, otherwise he plays 80-100 games again next year and that is no good b/c he will be playing catch up for many of those games to get back in rythym…

Stop with the Vlad hate, you just seem like an idiot, sorry to say…

By the way?

Mine isn’t the only NO, or even MAYBE vote in this, and numerous similar threads over the past month. I realize this particular site is considerably more pro-Vlad than most of the other Angels’ sites, but there should still be room for a voice from the opposite side.

It isn’t bashing – it is merely showing an opposing point of view. Sorry if some of you can’t handle a little balance in the posting here.

by R.Munkee on Dec 11, 2009 6:22 AM PST reply actions

I think it's more that it comes off as bashing than it comes off as a balanced opinion

In that it sounds like a broken record after a while…and sounds somewhat pathological.

SHUT THE FUCK UP

Opposing views are welcome, but you bring nothing else to the table, so everyone is annoyed by you. Why don’t you actually read a round a little bit? You’ll see opposing views all over the place. When it comes to baseball, the smartest two guys in the room might have completely different views of the same subject, which is great! The problem is, you’re NOT one of the smartest guys in the room. If you are, then you’re simply fucking insane.

Join the community. This team is more than just Vlad. What pitcher should we sign? What players are trade bait, and who is untouchable? Do you know there are 30+ other guys on this roster? You should look into that some time.

I will be disappointed if we re-sign Vlad

Even at a significant discount (for example, $5 million), Vlad is taking away a spot in the lineup (very likely the 4 or 5 spot) for a younger player as well as $5 million that we could pay to a front-line starter like Halladay or Lackey. We should be thankful of what he gave us, but this team does not operate on sentiment. I am glad that we stood firm and did not offer Figgins a fourth year (let alone a vesting fifth year), and I will be equally glad if and when we let Vlad go elsewhere.

by Brody on Dec 11, 2009 12:37 PM PST reply actions

Yeah but who can match what he offers? Who are you suggesting takes that spot?

Not a whole lotta hitters on the market can match what he offers. Sure the guy runs like a double amputee now, but he still hits the crap outta the ball. Where else are we gonna get a .300 hitter with as much power as he offers?

by Balls and Strikes on Dec 11, 2009 12:41 PM PST up reply actions

Number one, Vlad doesn't hit the crap out of the ball very often anymore.......

 - a crappy swing at a crappy pitch, with crappy results, is much more likely, these days.

Some good names have been offered. Matsui, while equally defensively challenged, is a better option than Vlad because he’s a lefty – AND, unlike Kendry, he’s a lefty who actually hits lefties better than righties. Thome is probably another better option than Vlad, and he’s also a lefty. I mentioned Huff as an alternative who will likely put up better numbers than Vlad, next year. ( Any bettors out there? ) There is also Delgado. A POWER lefty with good splits would be a welcome addition to the Angels lineup.

Here’s a name that no one has mentioned – Jack Cust is about to be non-tendered tomorrow, and he’s a lefty bopper with one of the highest OBPs of all those mentioned. He too, would be better than Vlad, in my not so humble opinion.

For all the delusionalists who expect Vladdy to return to his hey-days, allow me to remind you that he has steadily declined in ALL his power stats, practically EVERY year since 2004. I ask, what makes you think that trend is suddenly about to reverse itself? Bodies – especially abused bodies – don’t work that way.

You can’t predict the future.. Who know what will happen in 2010 ??
Vlad is capable if he DH for the year, 20 hr 85 rbi and a .300 avg…

If you get that for 5 million that isn’t bad, plus you keep yer guy that has been loyal and played every game with his heart on his sleeve,a guy who loves playing here…

I understand you don’t like Vlad, but yer alternatives are very perplexing.. Delgado is off major surgery,is just a HR hitter,Thome hits like 240 with 25 hr and Matsui, well I am a Matsui fan but he prob stays a Yank if not I don’t think he comes here…

Again,0 field time for Vlad.. If you don’t like that he is taking up time there, then let me know who should be there..He will need his rest opn certain days as well,I’m sure he will get banged up…. I say he plays 125 games next season.

I’m hopeful of a great season from Vlad, that is it…Might be wishful thinking, but whatever it is,I call it loyalty..

by raven191 on Dec 12, 2009 3:47 AM PST reply actions

yes

there are plenty of overpaid DHs out there… at least with Vladdy, we will know what to expect from him, probably career low numbers. But that’s better than many DHs out there for his price. The upside is that he may be out to prove that last year was just a really bad season for him. In that case, we get a good deal.
Plus, I really do want him to retire here. To me winning isn’t everything. It’s ok if we don’t win the WS next year or the year after. I just want us to be in contention every year and enjoy watching my beloved angels play, and I will be plenty happy with that.

i was also tring to say

that there’s a value to quality person. It’s not always about the statistics. I will never want guys like Manny and Beckett on the Angels because I think they are not quality people. Vlad is a quality person. Jeter and M. Rivera, even though I despise the yankees, are quality people. I think there’s value to that beyond numbers. Plus, Vladdy’s numbers weren’t bad at all but I expect them to be better.

I think Vladdy is great!

I think they should re-sign Vlad, he has been a huge part of the Angels success over the last 5 years. He takes some awful looking swings at times that pisses everyone off, but when he does hit those pitches I don’t think anyone complains. I say keep him as the DH, stick him in the 5th or 6th slot in the batting order..

by Anaslime on Dec 12, 2009 10:22 AM PST reply actions

Scioscia had the opportunity....

to do just that on August 4th, and instead clogged up the cleanup spot with Vladdy for the rest of the year. Actually, in his defense, Vlad had his best 11 games of the year, from 8/6 thru 8/18. ( From that point on, however, he batted a less than Izturesque .265, for the rest of the regular season.)

I wouldn’t have a problem with Vlad, if he was pushed down in the lineup, if he didn’t perform – the trouble is Scioscia would plug him in the 4 hole for the entire year, waiting for that resurgence that some people here expect to show up. Through most of this past season there were 4 or 5 batters in the lineup who deserved to be hitting in front of Vlad, but with Scioscia’s incredible arrogance, that isn’t likely to happen. You DO remember him trotting Steve Finley out there a couple of months too long, don’t you? At least Finley could play some D.

it's not vlad's fault scioscia puts him in the 4th spot
