Reagins said the Blue Jays have targeted Saunders, Bourjos and Mike Napoli.
It's even "possible" that the deal could be expanded to send more Blue Jays to Anaheim. "They have a lot of pieces that are attractive," Reagins said.
Could we really get Roy Halladay without having to give up our shortstop? Seems like a pretty awesome deal to me. Thoughts?

Well this is the package everyone kept offering (well at least on HH)
and everyone seemed to add Reckling or Walden (some crazy enough would add Conger) as a top prospect. In 10 days we will know how the 2010 Angels were formed.
They want power. We want respect...
i would be ok with it if it was weaver or santana but i dont like the idea of getting rid of saunders,
and i believe aybar was in there and that would be ok with me as i do have confidence in izturis and whoever the utility player will be probably evans or brown
GO COLTS!!! 09 IS OURS!!!
I don't see them offering Weaver.
I was expecting them to offer Santana instead of Saunders, but not Weaver.
what if it was Weave/Napoli/Bourjos
would you pull the trigger and take a gamble that Santana and Kazmir will return to form? Im not saying Kazmir was awful or anything like that.
They want power. We want respect...

Would be even better
if we gave Kazmir more run support more often. Could you imagine Halladay arriving and getting the same offensive support as Kaz did when he arrived last season?
....
Halladay would probabaly still end up with 20 wins.

Agreed
Weaver should stay as we need more of his 2009 performance down the line. Aybar should stay as well, the others can go
....
i'd rather see them part with saunders...
santana and weaver have shown they have higher ceilings

I'm all for kicking Weaver to the great white north
he’s a Boras client and will be gone when he’s a free agent. Now assuming we get Halladay signed long term, I say “where do I sign”.
When I'm not at the stadium, I'd rather be watching my Halos back in Costa Rica!

Well
If its Nap instead of Aybar then we’re losing a lot of power (which you’ll see if Naps the Jays starting catcher) that we desperately will need. But we will have a leadoff hitter with SOME speed in Aybar.
Its difficult to give up either of the two, but ones gotta go.
Ya, it's certainly a tough call.
but I think Napoli is the better one to put in the package.
Unless Conger can play next year
I say you really can’t trade naps….that’s just such a massive drop from what Naps gives offensively to what you get out of Mathis/Wilson/Budde.

Phillies want in.
I dont see how they will do it considering that Jays fans dont like Saundo why on earth would they like Happ, dude got lucky and pitches in the NL. But here it is…11:36pm: One baseball source tells Tom Verducci of SI.com that the Phillies have been “very aggressive” in their efforts to obtain Halladay. Apparently the Phils are trying to find the players the Blue Jays want, even if that means looking on other teams.
A three team trades seems like it would be too hard for the Phillies to pull off.
They want power. We want respect...
but then there was this in the morning:
8:33am: Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. had this to say to Scott Lauber about acquiring Halladay: “I don’t think there’s any likeliness. None.”
Either someone’s calling bluff or in a 12 hour period Ruben Amaro got off his ass…

the only "other" pieces that would intrique me...
Lind and Hill… but of course we know thats not happening. I would not give up Saundo… but he’s a personal Fav of mine so maybe im biased. I’d sub Santana instead.
IT COULD HAPPEN

Halladay can lead us to and through the playoffs. I like Saunders, but he’s not Halladay

I like giving up Naps over Aybar any day
solely because Soth has shown he is gonna play Mathis nearly half the time anyway and I would rather give up half a catcher than a whole short stop… simply math to me
i am not saying i agree with Soths obsession with Mathis but since its gonna happen regardless I say we trade the least amount we can
Saundo, Peter B, and Naps for Halladay? Are you kidding me? YES PLEASE!
Then let’s go get Lackey and see how the Yanks like our rotation then. I know it’s alot of money but World Championship Merchandise sells like hotcakes so that should take a bite out of those contracts

What if we....
offer Saundo, Napoli, Bourjos, and Walden for Halladay and Scott Downs? He’s a lefty to replace Oliver and he’s 33 so they’re getting younger too.
Reagins has said more pieces could get moved….

What if we
Halladay+Downs!!! Now that makes sense. A healthy Shields and Scotty Downs! DO IT!

happier to send naps
i think he has potential but i also think mathis hasn’t reached his ceiling and we have more catchers coming down the line. add to it our likely logjam at DH and it just makes sense.
keeping aybar would be fantastic. he may regress some, but even then he’d be a plus SS.
R.I.P. Nick Adenhart - Always an Angel
Maybe we're taking on Vernon Wells as well
no pun intended, he has a lot of salary they need to dump, maybe he needs a change of scenery, I remember coveting him a couple years ago and he’s only 30. Then we can swing a deal to send Matthews somewhere for a bag of rocks.
#34, never forget.
Jays need a catcher
looking at their roster it seems like they need a catcher really bad because they dont really need a shortstop when they already signed alex gonzales so im guessing the deal would be fair and i like aybar as our shortstop he is a gifted player. what mathis did during the postseason was big for the organization so i think he is taking the starting job he is very good calling games so i guess why not i wanna see gary matthews go to toronto also lets get rid of him so we can sign vladdy hopefully the jays take him and at the end they are gonna get rid of him too so i only have a question who is gonna be the fifth starter we have quality pitchers and two aces if we get Hallyday but it would be sad seing saunders go too
Catchers with monster power are a rare commodity in baseball
So, no.
Somehow pitchers like Johan Santana, C.C. Sabathia, and Cliff Lee manage to get traded without involving all-star pitchers, Gold Glove shortstops, or historically powerful major-league catchers. For all you who like to say “it takes talent to get talent,” this is the kind of talent that moved Cy Youngs:
- Deolis Guerra, Carlos Gomez, Philip Humber and Kevin Mulvey
- Carlos Carrasco, Jason Donald, Jason Knapp, Carlos Carrasco and Lou Marson
- Rob Bryson, Zach Jackson, Matt LaPorta, and Michael Brantley
You do not include Napoli.
The active player with the lowest career OPS+ right now with significant PA’s: Jeff Mathis.
This reduces us from a strength at catcher to a MASSIVE weakness.
Ugh.
RIP Nick...

True
For all you who like to say "it takes talent to get talent," this is the kind of talent that moved Cy Youngs:
* Deolis Guerra, Carlos Gomez, Philip Humber and Kevin Mulvey
* Carlos Carrasco, Jason Donald, Jason Knapp, Carlos Carrasco and Lou Marson
* Rob Bryson, Zach Jackson, Matt LaPorta, and Michael Brantley
However, it also took this much to get a near-Cy winner who ultimately won the award outright:
- Cliff Lee (the irony!), Grady Sizemore, Brandon Phillips and Lee Stevens
There are many components to a deal, which include scarcity and need. The Mets didn’t give up all that much for Santana (both contemporaneously and in retrospect) because it was known that Santana was going to ask for the moon and very few teams could afford what he was going to ask. There weren’t a lot of guys bringing roses and chocolates to the Twins, which suppressed the quality of players in exchange.
In the case of Lee and the Phillies, the Indians took a nice haul of talented players but demonstrably less than the Jays were asking for Halladay, which is what helped to close the deal. Les, in essence, was a more reasonably-priced alternative to Halladay for the Phillies.
Without Halladay being available, Lee would have arguably been the best pitcher available and would have fetched a higher level of talent in exchange. Therefore, it isn’t wholly relevant to look at past deals for top pitchers and use that to conclude that this offer or that one is too rich or too inadequate. Each deal stands in the context of the time in which it took place.
By the way, I noticed the Phillies traded Carlos Carrasco twice in the same deal. Is that legal? Or do the Phillies breed guys named “Carlos Carrasco” the way we do guys named “Francisco Rodriguez”?

Right now I would categorize Naps more as
A hitter with monster power, capable of prolonged slumps, who can catch.
Had I owned the Pittsburgh Pirates, I could have saved America.

And Mathis...
has been in a slump his entire career. I’ll take monster power and the occasional slump over a complete inability to hit a baseball any day.

I am up for signing Pedro Martinez for a 1 year deal if Only to get him

Wow! No Aybar?!?
Definitely make this deal! As much as I love these guys and Lackey, this is Roy Freaking Halladay we’re talking about. The Albert Pujols of pitchers! A guaranteed 3 wins in a 7 game series even against Cream Cheese SaFATia and who knows, in Angel Crimson Doc could win 30 games next year.
According to Gammons the Jays now want 5 PLAYERS !
I guess the question would be what five players? If it is Napoli, Saunders and Borjos, then who are the other two?
They should be lesser prospects not top prospects as far as I’m concerned. With Napoli and Saunders they get two top of the line major league starters at their respective positions. Both young and both proven.
It is good if Aybar is not included, but the question remains, who are the other two?
they want 5 players, but they arent getting them.
and they want two INF of Wood, HK, Aybar? I guess the bud in Toronto is pretty good.
They want power. We want respect...

I'll tell you what though....
If this thing with Halladay falls through……and all we do is resign Lackey, after having lost Figgins. I will be PISSED ! Pissed at Reagins, pissed at Arte. Pissed at the entire organization. Especially when we see Halladay sign with Boston at the last minute !
Boston needs a bat.
why would they trade Bucholtz or Kelly to Toronto. Bucholtz will probably be the no.2 guy after Beckett leaves which is in 2011.
They want power. We want respect...
by SenorChuckles on Dec 11, 2009 1:29 PM PST up reply actions
If it's after the New Year and Toronto is running out of time...
then maybe the Jays wouldn’t demand Buchholtz in the package. Remember, Halladay has said he wouldn’t negotiate a contract with them after Spring Training. They have to move him before Spring Training. IF it is not with us then the options are limited and thus Boston becomes a player again.
Did Reagins actually SAY that?
is it just me or are people getting all hyped up about nothing? did reagins actually say that the trade was for saundo, naps and bourjos? i don’t see quotes around that statement in the article.
When asked about the rumor Thursday, Reagins chuckled.
“I have no reaction,” he said. “There are a lot of rumors in this environment, a lot of things that get thrown around. It’s up to someone else to decipher them, not me.”
The Blue Jays have targeted Saunders, catcher Mike Napoli and Bourjos, among others.
Reagins said it’s “possible” a deal for Halladay could be expanded to include other Blue Jays coming to Anaheim.
i seriously think that digiovanna is just trying to stir the pot with rumors that were already talked about previously. was naps mentioned during the pre-trade deadline last season? yes…were there other players talked about? yes…do I think that the current offer as portrayed by this article is for naps, saundo and bourjos is legit? no way!
while i love to get halladay on our team, i’ll believe it when i see it. and while these rumors are fun (i constantly check mlbtraderumors throughout the day) in the end i hate how these media guys spin everything to make it seem that it’s truth or that it came from the horse’s mouth without a shred of evidence.
i dunno, that’s my 2 cents on it. i just think digiovanna is just trying to stir the pot with a single line and i highly doubt that reagins would come out to say something like that. he’s too ninja-like for something so obvious! what do you guys think?
I’ll believe it when I see it.
I concur. That’s the attitude I have learned to have with the Angels front office. Just because the FO seem to err on the side of being conservative when it comes to making trades. That might be right and it might be wrong, but that is the way they operate.
I too would love to see Halladay in Angels red. At this point I think it is more than a luxury. It is a necessity. With what the Yankees have done thus far (Pettiite and Granderson) we actually need to have Halladay in our rotation if we want a realistic chance of beating them. Their offense will still be superior to ours, but if we have the superior starting five we could balance the tables a bit. That being said, just because I feel we need Halladay does not mean the Angels brass will feel the same way or take the steps to insure that we get him.
Napoli, Saunders and Bourjos can't be true
There is no way the Bluejays give up Roy Halladay for those three players… no way! However, if they do pull the trigger now without hesitation! Imagine that rotation…. Halladay, Weaver, Kazmir, Santana… and ?? (does it matter??)
Light up the Freakin Halo!
