epic suck

RIP Nick Adenhart 4/9/09

I blog about the Angels at The Diamond Aces

by Jay Cal on Dec 11, 2009 3:01 PM PST reply actions

Yikes

Well this could mean two things-

1) He comes back for 2011 with the Halos, sucks, gets released and never pitches well again for anybody.

2)The Angels release him sometime this season, he comes backs for 2011 with another team and owns ass with a surgically repaired arm.

I think it’ll be option 1

Can we release a guy on the DL?

I think I will drink a cerveza Imperial in honor of a successful surgery.

And I’ll shall drink to our awsome team putting together another successful season next year.

Pour a little liquor for the homie

I am doing just that. Pooring a little liquor not only for Arredondo but also for the Angels 2010 season. I’m a Mariners fan but I did invest around 100.00 in Arredondo cards over the past 3 years.

His injury was original diagnosed as an elbow strain

Which is the same thing Santana had during 2009…….

So he could stay fresh if they needed him. He chose to go back to the Dominican.

Maybe now Reagins will address our real need:

Finding effective relief pitchers. Enough about getting a 3B. Enough about getting some other OF that we don’t really need. Enough about trading for a starting pitcher when we already have 4 good ones and decent options for #5.

If memory serves me correctly, Scioscia used all his starters in Game 6 of the ALCS because he didn’t trust the bullpen. Enough brushing this thought off with a “but shields will be back in top form” or “Arredondo had an off year” or “The young guys (Jepsen/Bulger/Thompson) can get it done.” We need a genuine closer, a lefty specialist who doesn’t stink against lefty hitters, and another proven setup man to go with our hopes that Shields returns to form. How many games did we lose last year because of our bullpen? At least 20.

Who else is on board with the “we need relief” plan?

by BrownLunchSack on Dec 11, 2009 4:52 PM PST reply actions

especially if we don't re-sign Oli.

I still don’t get why he didn’t get offered arb. He was easily our most consistent (and best) reliever last year.

by Wally's World on Dec 11, 2009 5:29 PM PST up reply actions

Take a look at some second-half numbers

Jepsen and Bulger were solid relievers in the 2nd half of the season. Im not saying I disagree but I think your overstating our need. We also have a series of up and coming pitchers in the minors that could fill that role.

Ok.

He is GOOD no matter where you put him, as long as he is healthy. The guy hasn’t had an ERA above 4 during his Angels tenure.

Escobar sucks

Quit wasting money on this has been. He won’t stay healthy.

by ryanfea on Dec 11, 2009 6:42 PM PST up reply actions

So remember when he was a dark-horse Cy Young candidate in 2007 before the injury?

Like, when he was leading the league in ERA at 2.88? Uh, yeah. I wouldn’t necessarily say the Angels should keep him—I think that time has come and gone—but I certainly wouldn’t say he sucks. Especially if he’s healthy.

Maybe “sucks” isn’t the right word but I’ve completely turned against him.

Um

Pitchers get hurt and stuff. Is this news to you?

by dmhead on Dec 11, 2009 8:47 PM PST up reply actions

really?

Thanks for enlightening me. Kelvim didn’t just have a couple 15 day stints. He missed entire seasons! He was paid around 20 Million dollars over those two years. Think logically for a second and you’ll realize it is downright moronic to waste more cash on him.

by ryanfea on Dec 11, 2009 9:24 PM PST up reply actions

Chris Carpenter...

…totally sucks (missed 03 entirely, and pitched 5 total games in 07-08). Did I mention he was runner up for the Cy Young award in the NL this year?

Teams do have insurance, you know. (They give you cash, which is just as good as money).

1 line siggy line because I was asked nicely. Go Angels! helpfindscottajob@gmail.com

by Slasher52 on Dec 11, 2009 10:13 PM PST up reply actions

Carpenter was much better than Escobar at every point during their careers

To think that Escobar will bounce back as well as Carpenter is silly. Also, nobody could have predicted the resurgence that Carpenter had. Carpenter signed a 5 year/ 63.5 Million dollar contract before 2007. If Carpenter wasn’t locked up to a huge deal with guaranteed money, he would’ve been released. When I say “waste more cash” I mean that HE doesn’t deserve the money. I realize that teams know what they are getting into when the give multi million dollar contracts so obviously they are protected to an extent from bad contracts in regards to insurance.

by ryanfea on Dec 11, 2009 10:46 PM PST up reply actions

You make a valid point about the contract

Which is why I believe Escobar pushed himself so hard to get back on the mound. It just wasn’t meant to be in ‘09. I don’t think he should be offered a long term contract, but who knows more about Escobar’s health than the Angels’ medical staff? If they think he’s ready to go in 2010, and the price is right, he’ll be re-signed; if not, then I hope he enjoys his next stop.

Carp and Escobar aren’t as far apart as you think. Escobar isn’t chopped liver. Look for yourself (just search for Carpenter on the lower half of the page):
http://www.baseball-reference.com/compare.cgi?top=/players/e/escobke01.shtml

Carp has more wins and a better ERA, but Escobar isn’t far behind. If Escobar wasn’t a reliever for parts of 4 years, he might have the same record or close to it. They came up with Toronto together in 1997 and both ended up with new clubs in 2004.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see a team take a chance on Kelvim Escobar and be very happy with their returns.

Hey...

when did I say throw more money at him? I just think its downright moronic to throw a guy under the bus because he had some serious injuries. He seemed to be a great teammate and looked like a Cy winner when he could actually get out there. He doesn’t deserve that kind of venom from Angel fans. Its not like he’s Carl Pavano.

by dmhead on Dec 12, 2009 10:27 AM PST up reply actions

Agreed.

It wasn’t like Escobar was milking the clock. In fact, he probably pushed himself too hard.

YES or NO? ? ?

Everyone please reply yes or no whether they feel Arredondo will be able to come back? I have invested alot of money on his 2006 Bowman Chrome cards. Mariano Rivera and Hoffman both had their first solid year as a 26 year old and Arredondo will be 26 for the entire 2010 season. He had a great 2008 so that balances out the 09. If he is lucky enough to have a full season in 2011 he will be 27 years old. How many think he will be a great closer? My opninion is that because he is not “lanky” or “fat” , being probably under six feet tall aron 170lbs, that he has a compact motion, he probably will learn from this mistake and TJ makes your elbow stronger right? But Francisco Liriano cannot throw as hard post surgery? Maybe he has a mental block? I hope this is a wakeup call for Arredondo to begin conditioning himself physically and mentally during the 2010 season.
I saw Arredondo in Spring Training of 2007 and I immediately thougt of Mariano Rivera. I predicted Mo’s greatness when I spoke to Curtis Sliwa live on ABC radio prior to game 4 of the 1996 World Series. SInce then he has become the best closer in history. I saw Arredondo and thought the same thing. Hoffman and Mo broke out at age 26 so its NOT too late for Jose. Hopefully he grows up a bit , no?

Only in Arizona.

Baseball cards are fun, just like my bobblehead collection. But unless you have cards from the golden days of baseball (or a Billy Ripken Fuck Face card), they are a terrible “investment”. They are too many companies and too much mass production.

that was funny. That was a funny card. Actually the exact opposite is the case. There was too much mass production back then, and the exact opposite now

by tdforbust on Dec 11, 2009 5:48 PM PST up reply actions

Not exactly.

Two major wars caused baseball card production to draw to a trickle. The 50s and 60s were their heyday.

Baseball card sales were $1.2B in 1991, and are now in the $200M range.

Reliever Cards

I agree. I saw Jose pitch in Spring Training 07 and it was like he was firing bullets. I thought of Mariano Rivera, obviously he had a great 08 and that would have been the time to sell but I was doing other things. Darren O’Day is the only other reliever card I have. I have his 08 Stadium Club Autograph Print Plate.

I think thats a no

If he had been solid pre-injury, maybe, but he stunk it up last year. And its not like he wasnt healthy. He had a sub 3.0 era for a good strech in salt lake. He came back up and got rocked. Big league hitters figured him out. He needs to A.) get healthy and then B.) come back with something new or he’s done.

REAGINS

Reading the quotes about Arredondo and his mentor who died, and then reading GM quotes along the lines of “I am familiar with said player.” etc. etc. It sounds like Reagins is afraid. Why would they let him run loose around the D.R. , when he is the replacement for K-Rod? He should be fired for that alone, no? If I were the GM, I myself , would befriend Jose, as to me, he could have been, and can still become one of the best closers in history. I would have been tough with Jose but at the same time I would treat him like a friend and not talking about him in he press in such a hands off manner with a pair of white gloves, talking like some kind of lawyer or District Attorney.

by tdforbust on Dec 11, 2009 5:17 PM PST reply actions

CLAUSE IN CONTRACTS

If you have control of the player why not stipulate to them that the can only pitch in winter ball with the clubs permission?? It is basically glorified sand lot baseball, so why did the front office allow for this to happen?? People are stating how he has been hurt all year, and really this sounds like a really bad chain of communication between the organization to Jose. Jose is a kid, you expect kids to misbehave.

by tdforbust on Dec 11, 2009 5:20 PM PST reply actions

It's a PR tool

Of course, injuries will happen (Rivera, for example), but to not allow your Latin players to play in their native countries is a very bad thing. You’ll piss off your player, piss off his countrymen, piss off your scouts who can’t sign players in that country…catch my drift?
