worst

possible scenario.

www.13stoploss.com

by feNOMINAL on Dec 14, 2009 9:04 AM PST reply actions

And the scenario most likely to result in an irrational response...

…like trading the farm for Halliday, or making a bad bet on Lowe. We’ll have little to no leverage after this.

If the net result of this off-season is (a) Figgins signs within the division and (b) Lackey goes to Fenway — with the Halos only picking up scrubs and B-players to swab the fans’ tears — Reagins will need to have his Ninja card revoked. I’ll call him Turtle after this one.

by Turks Teeth on Dec 14, 2009 10:27 AM PST up reply actions   1 recs

Honestly I'd prefer at this point...

assuming Lackey walks that we just plug the holes with cheap players, take the draft picks, trade nobody, and wait a year for Halladay.

by Nashdiesel on Dec 14, 2009 11:07 AM PST up reply actions

Me too

The Angels can still win a world series or at least go to one without having to keep up with the payroll of the Yankees and Red Sox if they draft smart and develop their players. I think they need to focus on developing their young core of Morales, Kendrick, Aybar, and now hopefully Wood instead of overpaying for tier 2 type talent like Jason Bay or trading for a declining Lowe. I know it wouldn’t make most casual fans happy though if they didn’t make a move. Hope the team doesn’t feel obliged to make a move that may pay in the short term, but cost them in the long term.

by stolenbases on Dec 14, 2009 11:34 AM PST up reply actions

agree the worst possible scenario would be us overreacting and trading away the farm/aybar/saundo just for one year with halladay and then have him potentially leave.

Our team is still pretty good, sure we arent very intimidating on paper, but games aren’t won on paper. I think next year is a good year to get our guys(Saundo, Kaz, and Santana) to finally live up to their potential. A scenario where if they do, we still have the best rotation in the west. And if 2002 taught us anything, anything can happen in the playoffs and maybe we’ll see mathis, kendrick, and morales be on an absolute tear

if its any consolation

im sure lackey will just LOVE pitching most of his games in new yankee stadium, against the rays feisty lineup and an orioles team that will be on the upswing over the life of his contract.

Oh ya, and he has to deal with that freakish stadium he’s never been good at FOR 81 GAMES A YEAR.

good luck, john. You’ll need it.

Not a chance

With all the arbitration raises the Reds are facing there’s no way they’re going to add a free agent contract like the one Lackey is seeking to the payroll.

Doesn't even make sense

Why would he take a physical without a contract? There have been zero rumors about teams making offers to Lackey, and it seems unlikely that this year’s top free agent would sign without so much as a whistle from the hot stove. Remember, agents use rumors to leverage their bargaining position, and Lackey’s agent can’t be very good if he isn’t making sure stuff gets leaked to the media.

There are

a certain number of teams that I think all of us as Angels fans wouldn’t blame a player when they hit FA leaving for… but in the same respect there are a handful of teams that we all won’t forgive players for going to.
If Lackey signs with the Clevland Indians or NY Mets, or The Balt Orioles, when he would play the Angels he would get a standing ovation.
Just like Figgins will the first time he plays here, even though he went to a division rival.

But Boston, the Yankees, or Texas
He will be booed and deservedly so

My prediction as of 12-11-2009- Wood .265 avg, 20 HRs 70 RBIs and an above average glove at 3b

It seems like this has been developing for awhile

I remember Lackey saying back in 2008 he was tired of the Halos having a weak offense. Though the offense is improved now, it is pretty obvious to me that Lackey still feels he has a better chance of winning a ring with the Red Sox than the Angels.

Since it appears that the Sux have a higher payroll ceiling than the Halos, he probably figures that if he signs with Boston his contract won’t have as much of an impact on them as it would the Halos. For the Angels signing Lackey would pretty much wipe out their budget for 2009. For Boston they can still at least make one more signing such as a Mike Cameron type.

I am more interested in seeing what he does against the East

He was good in the playoffs, but facing the Yanks and Rays so many times throughout the year will be interesting to say the least.

In any case this move really doesn’t make sense to me from a Red Sox perspective. It seems like this would really hinder their chances of resigning Beckett and/or Martinez in the near future or going after Joe Mauer.

Look for them to make a big trade to land Gonzales, with Buchholz being the centerpiece of the deal. Don’t weep for Boston’s offense.

by jjackflash on Dec 14, 2009 12:27 PM PST up reply actions

Well at least Tor gets screwed in this aswell

If Lackey signs the Angels get the 29th selection and it bumps the Scutaro pick to the 2nd round.

The biggest fear I have is that this is a precursor to a AGon deal and it effectively sews up 2 playoff spots in the AL East. That means that it gets even more difficult to make the playoffs…

by ~MMP~ on Dec 14, 2009 10:27 AM PST up reply actions

How would Reagins drive up the price?

If the Sox are offering Lackey something similar to Burnett money and Lackey is willing to accept, you risk Lackey agreeing to a bad contract (85-90 over 5) in attempt to drive up the price. That’s just irresponsible and bad negotiating.

To be honest

It’s not that great of a signing for Boston (if it does happen). The sentimental value is high so it seems more significant, but there is a solid chance that his best baseball is behind him. Injury/arm problems and bad finishes has been his MO lately. We get the pick, and maybe we make a move to compensate, i.e. Halladay as replacement or Bay as payback. This is a short term move for Boston, a short term risk. I just hope they dont turn around and trade Buchholz to the Padres for Gonzalez.

Its funny because Lackey is player that the Red Sox make fun of the most.

Vlad is the sentimental choice

but Matsui makes better baseball sense IMO. The Angels have been overly right handed with Hunter, Vlad, Juan Rivera, and Mike Napoli supplying most of the power with K-Mo being the only real left handed power threat. Matsui balances the lineup out in that aspect.

Secondly, Matsui fits into the new offensive philosophy better. Matsui is patient, unlike the free swinging-Vlad and he can help Abreu develop patience in the younger hitters. As great as Vlad was, I thought he was a bad influence for the Aybars and Kendricks of the world because he had the unnatural ability to hit anything within a 5 mile radius of the strike zone. Matsui has a career .370 OBP in the majors and never had an OBP lower than .353, his first year in the majors. Vlad would have high OBP’s but they were mostly weighed by his gaudy .325+ BA’s. But Vlad is slowing down and I don’t think he can hit .330 anymore.

Matsui only makes sense if

The rest of our money, including that saved by not signing Vlad, is going into a counter-offer to Lackey, an extension for Halladay, or some other similarly spectacular move.

Or we are buying GMJ out right now and rolling the dice on 2010. (Yes, I have a twisted sense of humor)

This reminds me of a comment Mr. Lackey made a while back.

“We are way better than they are. We lost to a team not as good as us.”
- John Lackey, after his team errored, blow-saved and suicide squeezed its way out of the playoffs back in 2008

I think Mr. Lackey has looked at the writing on the wall of the clubhouse (is that blood?) and concluded that maybe his team ISN’T the best bet going forward.

"It's just a tiny little nick, but it hurts when I get champagne in there."
- Jason Bay, on getting spiked scoring the winning run in ALDS Game Four.

and Lee to Angels?

Rumors out of Philly that Lee may go to the Halos, so the Phils can aquire the prospects needed to get Halliday….true? The Phils are reluctant to give up Drabek and others, but maybe they are looking for the Angels to help them out….

Sorry, but...

It’s one thing when a player leaves my team for free-agency (I have nothing but respect for Figgins). It’s another to do it to go to a team that arguably among the most hated by the fan base. Hell, I still hate Tony Granato to this day for leaving the Kings and going to the Sharks.

I was wondering what Seitz would have to say...

I’m not quite in the same place, but I completely feel your frustration. I just didn’t think Lackey was worth $85 million. Don’t know why, I just didn’t. I’m kind of glad he will be someone else’s problem in 2013 and 2014…

RIP Nick...

Yeah, seriously. What a crappy offseason thus far.

But at least we have the 2009 WS MVP! pessimistic sarcasm

Woo hoo! Great day! (sarcasm)

We signed Matsui.

It looks like Arte has decided to save money and rebuild within the organization. With Halladay gone, there is really nothing out there to be exited about.

I don’t see how the halos win the West with the roster they have right now. Seattle with Figgy and Cliff Lee now need to be seen as early favorites.
