Angels Sign Hidecki Matsui for $6.5M
ESPN's Buster Olney is reporting the Angels have signed OF/DH Hideki Matsui (via Twitter).
UPDATE: Hold on...apparently the Angels are "on the verge" of signing Matsui. Not a done-deal yet.

Does this move make the Angels better?
Not quite the Free Agent signing I was hoping for.
RIP Nick Adenhart 4/9/09
I blog about the Angels at The Diamond Aces
cheap and saves money for pitching
half the price of vlad last year with twice the production.
and he’s patient. team is clearly looking for a repeat of the Abreu find

What pitching? Who's available?
And don’t you dare say “Lowe”.
Angels baseball. We do what we must, because we can -- HaloDutch
Trade in and of itself
doesnt make the team better BUT does give us opitions in the Halladay sweepstakes…. I’ll take it!!!!
Confidence breeds success, self-doubt breeds failure
He's better than Vlad right now...
and 6.5 is very reasonable. Only a 1 year deal. This is a good pickup I think.
100%
A business signing. The revenue from the overseas market alone will make his contract free.
Everyone should start getting used to a lot of asian marketing in the stadium.
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
exactly
I dont mind the baseball production either. We need patient sluggers.

He is a Skankee, and Vlad evidently wouldn't be our DH anymore.

some reports

Says we could be the third team to get Lee. I’d be okay with that.

I would love to have Cliff Lee
He kinda reminds me of Chuck Finley at times.

Wouldn't you consider Lee a true Ace
And he’s younger than Halladay right?

Id take Lee.
but how would it work?

My guess is that the Phillies
would use some of our prospects to get Halladay.
I really don’t know.

So Halladay in philly talking about contract extension.
means a trade is done or very fuckin close. If so this makes me sad…

Lee is doing it with smoke and mirrors.
Honestly. I have seen him pitch. I have no idea how he gets away with it. It’s like magic or something. I don’t know where it came from, and I have no idea how long it will last.
Had I owned the Pittsburgh Pirates, I could have saved America.
I guess what I am saying is that I think he is
probably closer to being the 14 game winner Cliff Lee, than he is to the 22 game winner Cliff Lee.
Had I owned the Pittsburgh Pirates, I could have saved America.
Meh, toss the wins out
he may not be as great as everyone bills him, but he’s still pretty damn good. Dating back to him being involved in the Colon trade, he was always considered a top prospect with very good control and plus stuff. When he broke into the bigs, he pitched well, fell off a bit, and then rebounded really well. Even if there’s no more 22-3, 2.54 to be had, I’ll gladly take a guy who can almost certainly beat Lackey’s production.
But for 23 million? Notsomuch.
by Caseys Kiss of Death on Dec 14, 2009 12:38 PM PST up reply actions
Wins may not mean everything,
but they probably mean something. There is SOMETHING serious differnt between goind 14-13 versus going 20-3. It cannot ALL be attributable to the other guys on the team.
But, I agree. $25 mill a year? Let the M’s suck on that.
Had I owned the Pittsburgh Pirates, I could have saved America.
23 million per year seems outrageous to me
Oh well. Do we have ANY starting pitchers in our system that profile at least as potential #2 starters that aren’t years away from reaching the majors?

"is taking", not "took"
Remain seated please. Permanecer sentados por favor.
Had I owned the Pittsburgh Pirates, I could have saved America.
that's also wrong....
he’s signed a good DH to an inexpensive contract. So far so good.
My point being that the changes are not over,
so it is too early to jump ship even if one DOES believe that a Matsui signing, offset by Figgy/Lackey losses, is bad.
Had I owned the Pittsburgh Pirates, I could have saved America.
THIS IS AWESOME
on a positive note, no more ITS A THRILLA FROM GODZILLA from sterlings decrepit fat mouth.
2010 is shaping up to be a giant turd.
What do you need a fancy suit for, Charlie, you ain't got no job to wear it to.
Hard not to be emotional about all this...
because basically when I read the headline I saw, “Vladdy no longer an Angel.”
Couple that with Lackey going to the Red Sux…I sort of feel like crying (if men did that sort of thing).

Booooooo
Urns. i would’ve much rather had Vlad. seems like a lateral move to me. Im so depressed now. I hope Vlad catches on somewhere else and murders the ball for the next 3 years.
by No Bologna Polonia on Dec 14, 2009 11:57 AM PST reply actions
Why do people not like this move exactly?
He’s a better hitter than Vlad or Rivera at this point in his career…and extremely patient at the plate. He’s coming in cheap, for one year, and he opens up a ton of trade opportunities.
Or do you dislike a guy who doesn’t strike out, doesn’t ground into double plays, and reaches base at a .370 clip, and can hit 25 homers, just because he’s not the greatest hitter in the game today?
by Caseys Kiss of Death on Dec 14, 2009 11:57 AM PST reply actions
No kidding
I think the vitriol is based on the uniform he’s worn for his ML career thus far. Anyone who looks at his actual production as a baseball player cannot, objectively, be unhappy with this deal. All of the nimrods saying “barf” or whatever don’t have any factual basis for their complaints.
Another aging DH type. And he is not even OUR's.
Way rather have VLAD! He is so entertaining.
by Wally's World on Dec 14, 2009 12:03 PM PST up reply actions
step back
leave emotion out of it for a moment and realize that Matsui is more likely than Vlad to be healthy next year. Sure, from an emotional standpoint I’d rather see Guerrero return, but Matsui is likely to be able to play more often next year.
I loved Vlad
but take off the blinders, please. He was great for us…in the past. But he hasn’t played healthy for us since 2007…maybe earlier. He has statistically slipped every year in recent memory. He has provided us with flashes of his greatness from time to time, but he is now as frequently a liability as a producer. He grounds into double plays more than he homers, probably would have cost us more money, and may very well end up taking one more step back next season after OPSing under .800 last year. His best years are gone…and while Matsui’s probably are, too, his decline is less precipitous.

I'd say the issue is
that Vlad is beloved by the Angel faithful, and unless we are dumping him to get a a sizeable upgrade, some of us would rather have him. A healthy Vlad is more than capable of putting up the numbers Matsui did last year IMO,and probably would’ve signed a similar deal, so why not stick with the horse what brung you to the race? It seems like if you are willing to take a risk on a broken down outfielder still having some pop in his bat, it should be the guy you’re fans adore.
Just my opinion.

I don't know about "should"
But I’m kind of with you on this. There is nothing overly exciting about Matsui.
No Vlad is just depressing.
We are the Los Angeles Angels of the late 2000s
Agreed.
People not liking this really perplexes me. This is a good signing.
I guess people don't care
That he has a lifetime .370 OBP and .852 SLG% and was extremely productive last year despite the fact that he had a BABIP that was about 30 points below his average. Not to mention the fact that he DESTROYED LHP with a .618 SLG% and was the WS MVP.
These people are right, he stinks.

Meh. Not exciting, but he's cheap, patient, and productive
I rather have had Abreu or Napoli at DH with a signing of someone like Mike Cameron (maybe he didn’t want to move from CF), but this isn’t a bad move.

Hey FO, re-creating the middle of the 2007-2008 Yankees line-up probably doesn't really work.
Abreu on his own his fine, but Matsui is just…ugh. Should have re-signed VLAD if that’s the route we’re going to take!

by ReggieBullits on Dec 14, 2009 12:11 PM PST up reply actions
We can only hope...
Becky is the Boston version of our Big Thunda, maybe they’re so alike they’ll hate each other causing dissent in the clubhouse which ends with Pedroia trying to separate the two and he ends up with a season ending shoulder injury in the process.
Meanwhile, in the restroom, Big Papi will be injecting Youkilis in the buttocks and will slip and inject him in the nads.
That would make me feel better.

Actually, even more awesome is having Matsui and Abreu in the same lineup
the patience in the top/middle of that order? Working walks, pushing up pitch counts…driving pitchers mad. It could very well have the same ripple effect we saw this year with Abreu, but even moreso.
Plus, it’s not exactly murderer’s row, but…Aybar, Abreu, Matsui, Hunter, Morales, Napoli, Rivera, Kendrick, Wood? Pretty nice.
by Caseys Kiss of Death on Dec 14, 2009 12:18 PM PST reply actions
I just hope Napoli gets more ABs since his bat would make it a solid lineup with power spread througout
I fear it’s going to be more of the same though with Naps and Mathis. I know Mathis has the better defense, but does Napoli really cost the Angels as many runs with his defense as Mathis does with his bat?
RIP Nick Adenhart

Plus Napoli's patience
that’s three guys in the lineup who could easily OBP between .370 and .390.

If we could be the third team in the halladay
lee deal and we don’t have to give up one of our starters, sign me up, the rotation is set. we probably are the third team and the deal could happen quick because we know what the jays want, the phillies know what the jays want from trying to get halladay last year, the stumbling block would be us and the phillies plus an extension for lee
