Why are the Angels getting shut out?
Halladay to the Phils
Lee to the Mariners
Lackey to the sux
Why did the Angels come up with a goose egg this off season? We have the money we have the prospects. Do people not want to play in Anaheim? I don't understand how we can let teams get better all around us while we settle for an old DH to replace an old DH. Am I overreacting? Are there still plenty of guys to sign? Someone please try and cheer me up. I am usually a glass half full kind of guy but today has really got me down.

You're overreacting
But technically also correct.
The reason we are losing out on big names is because we’ve wasted far too much money on aging outfielders and other crappy players.
-GMJ – one of the worst contracts ever signed
-Hunter – great guy, and productive, but aging and very mediocre defensively
Until we stop throwing money at guys, we’ll never be able to sign difference makers.

His Gold Glove says otherwise.
And his awesome defense says otherwise.
And I now dislike you.

same
that was just ridiculous
"Precious in the sight of the Lord, is the death of His Saints." - Psalm 116:15 Rest In Peace, Nick.
His fielding last year was -11.5 RAR
Gold glove my ass, the thing’s a popularity contest, and is determined more by homers than by sound defense.
His fielding in 2003 was 13.2 RAR.
The last time his fielding was above average was 2005, at 2.6
Torii Hunter has not been an elite defender for most of his career, wall jumping or not.
Dislike me if you will, but at least read the damn stats before you start talking about Gold Gloves.

I have to partially agree with CJ
The gold glove doesn’t mean as much as it used to. Ever since Rafael Palmerio got it for playing 28 games at 1B, it has been tarnished. Is Hunter the best defensive CF? No, but he sure is very good, and I’m glad we have him on our side.
I just don’t think the stars aligned for us. Halladay supposedly lives near Clearwater, FL, which coincidentally is the Phils spring training site. Why we couldn’t have been on the other end of the 3way to get Lee, I don’t know. Lackey wanted too much money, and Figgins simply wasn’t worth what the M’s are going to pay him. I’m not sold yet on Godzilla, but he is without a doubt a much more patient hitter than Vlad. Everything else between them is a push.
1 line siggy line because I was asked nicely. Go Angels! helpfindscottajob@gmail.com
This is all Stoneman's fault
Speier and GMJ alone are eating up 16+ million dollars on the roster.

Ew
God, after playing the MLB Front Office Manager I really understand what it means to have that much money locked up in those types of players.
And also, F NTCs.
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
I think the past few years have been trending in the opposite direction
regarding NTC’s. If only Bavasi was still a GM…

sorry to disagree but wrong.
it wasn’t a money issue. the other teams just didn’t want to trade with us because, hopefully, they were offered better prospects and it wasn’t because they dislike us.
how could it be a money issue when we didn’t even get a chance to try for an extension with halladay? also, i think we’ll be happy come year 3 of lackey’s contract that we didn’t sign him.
"come on, eileen."
It's a money issue because we've thrown money at bad free agents
As a result, there is less money to sign amateur talent, and more importantly, we lose draft picks for every GMJ and Hunter we sign.
We have no attractive trade pieces because we spent our money on FA’s and neglected the farm.

It's not a money issue.
Despite your points, the Halo’s overall salary base has gone DOWN over the past couple of seasons.
I blame faith in prospects.
Had I owned the Pittsburgh Pirates, I could have saved America.
Disagree with CJ -- You are NOT overreacting. You are right!
This is completely unacceptable and unforgivable! We as Angels fans have been sweating our collective asses off the last two weeks about this Halladay, led to believe that Reagins, et al our working their tails off to get this done, and then, out of nowhere, the Phillies come in and swipe Halladay away from us. This can’t happen — the Angels as an organization cannot allow it to happen. Especially after losing Figgins (more accurately letting him go by choice )!
Unless the Jays, Mariners and others are secretly working to shut out the Angels (which I think is highly doubtful) it comes down to two things:
a) Arte is not the “winning comes first” fan-friendly owner we though he was. He actually in reality cares more about the bottom line than about winning.
b) we have an incompetent GM
It could be both A and B but I tend to think it is A.
there are other forces involved than just an owner and a gm.
if the jays got a better deal with the phillies/m’s than they did us, of course they’re gonna take it.
what i’ve learned is that whenever reagins announces anything like pieces for a trade or whatever offer we tendered then that deal fell through and it’s not gonna happen.
"come on, eileen."
Dude, just go away. Go be a Dodger fan.
We have the best owner in baseball with a quality product year in and year out.
Everyone is tired of your whining.

(Watch the flaming start… still just go away)
If we sign Matsui he could be the clutch batter we’ve been lacking. But it will only be for one year…. So i really dont know beside marketing why this deal will be made… lackey isnt worth what the Sox are going to pay. Glad we didnt sign him for that much. We have a young pitching rotation let see how the season pans out, last year we had so many injuries early on and still managed to have a good year. This team is strong, yes we lost two of our key players, but someone else will step up.

Posada will retire and Mauer will go to NY. And I’m sure Pujols will go somewhere else too. At this point, I just can’t imagine the Angels ever landing the best players in FA or trades. We’ll just have to grow our own best players, get 7 or 8 years of service out of them for cheap, then wish them well on their way to NY or Boston.
No matter what happens from here on, it has been a great season.

This, unfortunately, is probably 100% accurate.
We are a Tier 2 franchise, despite having a Tier 1 owner and a Tier 1 fan experience. Our lot in life may become that we obtain massive quantities of draft picks, draft well, develop strong talent, compete and win a lot, maybe snag a title, lose our top talent to other teams willing to overpay for the opportunity of the moment, and obtain massive quantities of draft picks in exchange.
Had I owned the Pittsburgh Pirates, I could have saved America.
I said as much
in Jack Frost’s whiny post, but I think you’ve crystallized the idea well.

maybe the coaching staff just feels that it's not worth the money
and wants to see how the AAA guys do with a full season up in the majors….
then when they collapse in september, it’ll cause them to overspend next offseason :o

80% of the HH fan base better be right.
’Cuz that has been the proclamation for years around here. Holy Hell if we actually tossed Wood into any deal necessary to keep up with the trading action over the past 18 months.

Why? Two reasons:
1) The Angels place a higher value on the minor leaguers in the Halo organization than do other teams, and
2) The other teams demand a larger number of players out of the Halo organization, then they do out of other organizations for the same talent they are looking to trade.
I once got the chance to ask Stoneman directly about #2. He had nothing more than a verbal shoulder shrug in response.
Had I owned the Pittsburgh Pirates, I could have saved America.
Other teams are making more aggressive bids than the Angels are. Plain and simple.

Today truly sucked as a fan of the Halos.
We lose Gomer “NESN” Lackey to the sux. The M’s have gotten better over the course of the last few days, how much so remains to be seen. We replace one old RF/DH, with a new old LF/DH, and will probably sign somebody, just to sign somebody in the near future. I feel like Chuck Finley after a night with Tawny Kitaen. Beaten and depressed.
YOU DON'T KNOW THE POWER OF THE DARKSIDE.....
Why do other teams ask us for the moon and the stars, and then settle for prospects from someone else?
