Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

It's akward how easy it is for me to hate you, John Lackey

An open letter to John Lackey:

I want you to know that I wasn’t ever a real fan of yours. There was something about you that made you hard to like. Maybe it was the post-ALDS swipe at the team, or your sophomoric ‘tude on the mound, or your willingness to so easily throw teammates under the bus. Whatever combination you choose is up to you, just know that you are dead to me. Farewell, Johnny, it was almost as if we didn’t know ya.

Holidays Wishes,

Rjcicc

PS:  All of your peripherals are trending the wrong way and my guess is that you’ll gain more weight, get hurt and be subsequently loathed by people who really care about baseball in Boston. Good luck.

This Fan-Post is authored by an independent fan. Tell us what you think and how you feel.

I'm over it.

We will see him what, maybe twice a year at most?

Might not ever see him in October if Boston doesn’t get some more offense.

What situation?

Our offense is arguably more powerful now with Matsui and Wood and our pitching leaders the last two or three years haven’t been named John Lackey.

Lackey's been injured part of the last two

And extremely effective when off the DL.

Remember that fancy 3.01 ERA he had in 2007? You know, the one that was the best in all of baseball?

Yeah, I do also.

That performance must have done a number his arm, since he’s only averaged 169 innings pitched per year after that season.

That's a lot of weight on both Wood and matsui

…..two risks…but they better come through

Better Big Bad John a Red Sox than a Yankee

My hunch was John Lackey would sign with the Texas Rangers. I reserve the right to be wrong. Pass three to the left, three to the right, three across, and have a hold ‘em hand. The winter roster moves are not over. I expect more than a lump of coal in the Halos’ Christmas stocking. Good luck Lackey in 2010—but NOT against the Angels!

My recent experience has mostly consisted of seeing Saunders shelled. And Garland.

Although I did see Saunders pitch a good game against the Padres this year—the same game in which Torii hit 3 home-runs.

And a few other good ones from other guys--Weaver, etc.

Just not Lackey, so far as I remember.

I did too

Saw him get shelled and give up a 7 run lead Sept 26th 2009 during my birthday bash.

Don't think I've ever seen him pitch either

I have seen Santana, Weave, and Garland a few times. Favorite was that Yankee game back in the summer with Woody homering.

by TheKingfish on Dec 14, 2009 8:45 PM PST up reply actions

John Lackey was 37-21 in games I saw him pitch in person

That includes three shutouts plus Game 7 of the 2002 World Series. Lackey has one more World Series ring than Barry Bonds. My Game 7 headline: “Lackey turns Giants into Peons.”

Only Halos game I've been too John pitched against the Giants this year at At&T

He was amazing till he ran out of gas in the 7th………then the blowpen almost lost it…….but Jepsen and Fuentes held on for the win.

Yeah, I just stare at my desk, but it looks like I'm working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch too, I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work. - Peter Gibbons

do you think big john will throw varitek or youklis under the bus and francona

better start getting his, “well you know big john is a competitor” line of bs when he upstages his new skip on the mound. and the boston media will beat the crap out of him when any of this happens. that kermit the frog sounding, mr. ed looking texan will wish he was back in newport coast.

I saw John Lackey win Game 7 of the 2002 World Series

And it was fuc*ing awesome.

Don’t forget guys, we’ve only won one World Series, and he was the winning pitcher of the 7th Game pitching on no rest. It was a gutty, gritty performance by a rookie.

That’s what I’ll remember. I will always love every Angel on that team, no matter what.

by waters96 on Dec 14, 2009 8:01 PM PST reply actions

Who all is still left from that team?

I know there used to be a list on the side of HH. But I’m on my phone and it doesn’t show up.

by BruinHalo on Dec 14, 2009 8:37 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

This is why I don't hate him

But I haven’t been a real fan of his in years. He is a great competitor, but not a great teammate. His crybaby act has been old for years. I wish he were coming back because he was our ace, but I am content to have him leave. Weave is now our ace.

by Brody on Dec 15, 2009 1:59 PM PST up reply actions

This is the biggest bunch of sour grapes I've ever heard

Lackey was great for the Angels. Now he’s gone because another team valued him more than the Angels did. That’s just the business side of baseball. There’s no need to start with the “I never really liked you” posts. Are we back in high school?

OK, I'm finally over losing Tex. Thanks Kendry.

The problem with this is......

Lackey pretty much just gave Angels fans the finger. I personally hate the Red Sox more than the Yankees i hate them both passionately. It is just a slap in the face for the support that Angel fans have shown him over the years. I hope he spends the rest of his career on the DL.

Bring back Lackey

Call it what you want

At least my post held some semblance of reasoning. Most of us here understand that players tend to follow the money. Maybe that’s something you’ve recently figured out, I don’t know.

The point I was trying to make was that this may not be the end of the world. In my opinion, he’s never been a true “number one” nor has be proved to be that likable. He has a history of inappropriately calling out his teammates and has routinely showed up his manager.

Not to mention nearly all of his important states are in decline and he’s coming off back to back injury shortened seasons.

You are what you type.

by rjcicc on Dec 14, 2009 8:38 PM PST up reply actions

well i am in the sort of

The Red Sucks can have our former lackey

Question: I wonder if he will even be on the opening day roster…or will he break down and start on the DL? Five years for this guy? Really???? He will be lucky to make it four? Good luck and good riddance….I hear his decision had alot to do with his girlfriend who is from Beantown…… hmmm, just like last year’s traitor Texiera. Hope you enjoy being a #3 or 4 starter big fella behind their ace(hole) snarly Beckett, #2 Lester, and #3 Dice K. Can’t wait to boo your sad ace when you come back to the Big A as a member of our ultimate arch enemies.

by topspinrob on Dec 14, 2009 8:40 PM PST reply actions

Say what you want about the man, how he has betrayed an entire fan base by going to the one team that every true Angel fan hates with a PASSION, how his childish behavior in the media this past season had a lot of people wondering if his heart was truly in it, or the fact that he had a tendancy to let his emotions get the best of him on the mound, all of this, and more, is true… but leave his personal life out of the equation unless you know about it personally… for instance, the fact that his wife is from New Jersey, not Massachusetts (and no, close proximity does not count here), not to mention the fact she already stated she wanted to stay in CA coming from people close to John, so it doesn’t seem like that would be an issue…

Tex wasn’t a traitor b/c he had no roots here, no personal connection to the franchise, just 3 months of being a rental player, so to compare Lackey to him is way off…the fact is that “Haus” wanted to go somewhere where he felt he would have a better chance to get a ring…

Will we cheer him for what he did during his time here, yes, but will we jeer him for being a greedy S.O.B. by playing for the Yankees red-headed stepsister? You bet your ass we will…

Hey rjcicc...

I couldn’t have said it better. Not that I don’t appreciate what he did, but, the guy was (is) an a-hole… the Anti-Figgins.

by SteelieD on Dec 15, 2009 8:29 AM PST reply actions

Meh. I dont think its fair for us to despise Lackey. He played by all the rules. It’s not like he went on a furious tirade demanding to be traded. It’s not like he pulled a Brett Favre, retire, unretire, sign with the Mariners.

The guy simply did what 95% of athletes do in this day and age. Lets face it, loyalty is dead in sports today. All players care about is a) Money and a very distant b) Winning. As much as I hate the sox, Lackey gets a chance to do both in Boston. If his agent was worth a damn, you can be sure he gave the Angels a chance to match.

Lackey is getting an ungodly amount of money considering his age, and declining stats. I don’t blame the Angels for not matching, I also don’t blame Lackey for jumping at a contract that would give him far more money he is worth.

And although the Angels have shown to be willing to spend money in the past, we are definately nowhere close to the Yankees, Bosox, and Mets payroll wise. And sure its frustrating, but I like the fact that my Angels arent just a product of a blank check. One of my favorite aspects of the Angels, is that we build a team full of scrappy players who play mostly on heart.

This brings me to where I feel the hate towards Lackey comes from. Unlike Figgy, Lackey never gave the impression he was playing with very much heart. As the post says, he was always throwing hissyfits on the mound and throwing teamates under the bus. As Angel fans, we were reluctant to give Lackey the backlash he deserved. On paper, Lackey may have been our number 1, but in our hearts that position was always in the hands of Weaver or Saundo.

In short, the Angels and Lackey relationship ended messy, but what long term relationship doesn’t? Lackey felt taken for granted. The Angels grew annoyed were starting to get annoyed with his attitude. It was a relationship we had to break. Sure there is going to be some angst and regret at first, and we are gonna want to call Lackey at 2a.m. while inebriated wanting him to come back. But Angel fans, we must remain strong, and be the bigger men. Remember the good times as they were, all the while, keeping in mind the bad times. Appreciate Lackey for his effort, and don’t be afraid to say hello when you see him randomly at the grocery store. So I am asking you guys, lets show some class, be the bigger men and show Lackey appreciation for what he did, and just know we are better of being single right now…who knows if we are patient we might just end up with a Webb, Greinke or Lincecum, that is if we dont go for a quick rebound girl… I mean pitcher in Derrick Lowe.

In Kobe we trust!

What if the Angels organization actually knew more about Lackey’s elbow than everybody else in the baseball world and they sent Boston a duck.?? Arte & Tony aren’t stupid by any means. Other than GMJ, what has the Moreno era come up short on?

Look at the Tex vs. Morales deal… That ended up about $150M to the good for the Angels… Abreu was genius and Matsui will be the same. Kazmir will gobble up 200+ innings and shields will be back. Wood will settle in nicely and hit 20+ bombs. We are strong and will be tough in 2010
