Angels Gm Tony Reagins had this to say in response to the numerous Fanposts sprouting up every minute (mostly by HH noobs) declaring the Angels' 2010 season all but lost and painting Angel's owner Arte Moreno as the next Donald Sterling.

which is why i made the post and poll about if people are jumping ship. for Heaven’s sake (no pun intended) this isn’t the bottom of the ninth and we are down by 40 runs facing Mo Rivera.
Thats right! Tony has this shit on lockdown.
Tony’s new nickname is not Turtle, Arte is not a cheap man looking to save money, and Seattle will still finish 3rd in the AL West. Im with you man, I am getting tired of all these HH rookies coming out trying to talk all that good shit. I just hope I wasnt as annoying when I first joined back in July.

Going through every thread and rec'ing every comment in the thread just to see the color green?
Nah, not annoying.

Im pretty sure it was one post here.
and then I tried to do it on other sites, but it just wouldn’t turn green. I hope we are still good friends though.

Yep we'll still win the west
and sadly lose in the postseason. I dont see how losing lackey, figgins and Vlad while adding matsui make us a better team than we were last year.

You're right, that doesn't make us a better team than last year.
But who knows, when you factor in whatever else we end up doing this offseason, anything could happen.

That's just it...
we DIDN’T WIN the post season. Haven’t made through the playoffs in seven years and people are acting like they’re breaking up the ’27 Yankees.
o look at the people posting the season is lost
most of them are in fact noobs, not just a derogatory term – people with 3 or 4 posts total. lol.
They are not noobs--they are newbys
As in Eric Newby. Newby’s best book was “A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush.” I read that while visiting Chitral and Bumberet in northwest Pakistan in July 1983. I paid my own way to within seven miles of Afghanistan. Dick Cheney cannot say that!
Moving Forward
I love having Lackey, Figgy and Vlad on the Angels…but there is NO WAY I’d wanna take on the STUPID contracts that Figgy and Lackey were given. 5 years for Lackey! In my mind this is seriously laughable…if they get 3 more good/great years from him, i’d say that’s expected, but he’ll be injured and emotionally exhausted by then. The M’s just finished overpaying Adrian Beltre for 1 great year…way to lock up that money in a really great, but a hustle/heart player.
Anyway…I’d love to see us grab Bay or even Holliday for that matter and switch out Rivera for Lowe. I’m far from losing hope. Progress is good.
Agree.
I hate that Lackey went to the Red Sox, and I want to hate him for it, but at the end of the day he just isn’t worth $85 million over 5 years. I should wish the j-hole would have taken more money over fewer years and been done with it. Like $55 million over 3 or something? I don’t know, I’m pulling that out of my ass.
RIP Nick Adenhart.

And Figgins, too.
I wouldn’t have kept him regardless, as I seriously believe it’s Wood’s turn and Figgins is likely going to decline mightily over the next couple of years, but even if I’d wanted Reagins et al, the club, to keep him, Figgins certainly wasn’t worth the money he got, either.
RIP Nick Adenhart.

Yeah from where I'm sitting Reagins has done 4 good things...
1) Not signing Figgins to a dumb contract of too much money for too many years.
2) Not signing Lackey to a dumb contract of too much money for too many years.
3) Not trading away a top prospect or two, an all-star pitcher and our young sky is the limit shortstop for an ace pitcher when we just go out and buy one next year.
4) Signing the WS MVP DH who can still mash to a very reasonable 1 year contract for less than half of the contract of the guy who played the position last year.
Frankly all 4 of these moves/non-moves I’m happy about.
And he’s not done yet….

Fo sho
Figgins was a no brainer. In my mind, b wood will be a return to normalcy with a power bat at 3rd base. Figgy’s speed was depleting, and his complete ass-sucking come post season was enough for me to be ecstatic when he left the team.
Lackey… 5 years? come on. Boston will be hating life with that snail on their team, 2 or 3 years down the line, when they find out that they can’t get past the yanks. Have fun with that contract.
I’d like to see a true #1 pitcher on the team, but im sure this will all come in time…even though kaz and weaver have the potential to be that ace.

Word
All day Monday, I was in a total funk about the goings-on, but after letting it settle, we’re good. Still lots of offseason to go, and lots of moves to be made/not made. Even now, I’m stoked with what we’ve got.
Now, having said that, I can’t wait for Torii to line one straight off that planetoid-sized mole on Lackey’s face.

Well, I'm in no way a noob to this site.
And am not jumping ship, some of the posts are a bit overboard and too pessimistic for my taste, but not completely without merit. As it stands right now, we ARE NOT a better team now. But I have faith that something will be done to make us a better team, it may not be a blockbuster trade or signing, and that’s ok. Last time I checked we went to the ALCS, and have been very successful the past few seasons. If we get another relief pitcher to shore up our ‘pen I’ll be happy. What WILL piss me off, is if we sign a player just to appease the fans. And lets just hope Brandon Wood is everything he’s been touted to be.
YOU DON'T KNOW THE POWER OF THE DARKSIDE.....
you good sir were speaking the truth until the last sentence.
doncha know that bwood is the second coming of jesus h. christ? he walks on water and then turns that shit into wine for good measure.
Driven into right-center field, Erstad says he has it...the Angels, world champions!
I've been waiting three years for BWood to strike that Jesus Christ Pose.
Now’s his time to shine.
I truly hope Brandon Wood is as great as everyone hopes.
I however will wait until the season starts to pass judgement. He may be the great player we’re all hoping for. And then again he may not. I just hope that the faithful will remain patient with him, and not expect a Kowbell like performance. The last player that was the supposed second coming was Todd Greene, and we all know how that turned out. I’m not being a pessimist, just a realist.
YOU DON'T KNOW THE POWER OF THE DARKSIDE.....
He's overpaid makes no difference whatsoever people.
It’s grasping at straws. But I understand it; there’s little left to do but rationalize.
Let me ask you something:
When we were getting smoked by C.C. Sabathia, were you all saying “Hey, this guy is overpaid”. ?
What the hell difference does it make when it’s time to go out there and play the damn game and the guy is wearing the other uniform? When AROD hit .800 or whatever the hell it was in the first two rounds of the playoffs, it’s funny but I didn’t hear everyone chiming in about how overpaid he is.
Stoooopid…
Which brings me to this: If we were so damn unwilling to give john 18 million per, I simply fail to believe in any way, shape, or form that we would be willing to not only pick up Derek No at 15 million per (that idea is absolute bugsh^t crazy) AND trade Juan Rivera and his oh so nice UNDERPAID contract.
So, call me crazy, but if I’m going to be made to believe that Reagins has “got this”, please don’t start out by doing this Derek Lowe thing. That is just flat out chuckleheaded stuff right there. Instead, show me how powerful your Ninja powers are and go get me a Grienke, a Lincecum, a Haren, and do it QUICK for god’s sake man.
Statistically Lowe and Lackey are similar pitchers..
so if we’re supposed to give 17 million a year to lackey for 5 years then giving lowe 15 mil a year for 3 isn’t that bad of a deal.
Lackey isn’t a CC sabathia type ace, that’s why we weren’t willing to pay him that kind of money.
Thankfully your not the GM
You honestly think Lowe is worth 3 years/$45 million? Wow.
by YouthofToday on Dec 14, 2009 11:15 PM PST up reply actions
If Lackey is worth 85 million over 5 years then yes...
Go look at the stats, Lowe is a superior pitcher the last 2 years because he actually pitches the entire season, unlike Lackey.
Dude,
Lowe is old as balls. He’ll be 39 when that contract is up.
No thanks.
"Precious in the sight of the Lord, is the death of His Saints." - Psalm 116:15 Rest In Peace, Nick.
And don't start telling me how it can't be done.
As the Seattle freaking Mariners of all people just got themselves a superstar pitcher today. And for who again? I still can’t believe my ears they’re hurting so bad.
This is what kills me goodvibe...
We couldn’t pull off a trade to land a premier SP, but the Seattle f-cking M’s could? Again, not the end of the world, or our chances in the upcoming season, but we lost out to Seattle? What could they offer that we couldn’t, 20 more inches of rain a year and all the flannel shirts Cliff Lee could ever want?
YOU DON'T KNOW THE POWER OF THE DARKSIDE.....
We could NOT have pulled off the trade for LEE or for HALLADAY
Look… no matter how many articles are published about the Angels’ farm system… IT SI NOT THAT GREAT. The prospects we have ARE NOT HIGHLY RATED relative to the top prospects in other minor league systems.
Compared to more than half the teams in baseball, the Angels do NOT have enough prospects of high value to consider trading a group of them for an expensive big name.
When prospect articles of a TOP 100 of ALL prospects in baseball were published last year, we had Adenhart in the 30s, Walden and Conger in the 90s (i think, maybe one of them was in the 80s). May Nick rest in peace, Walden is injured and Conger might be up to 75th best prospect in the nation by the next list. Would Trevor Reckling even crack that Top 100 this season, we shall see, so you want to dump Conger and Reckling and probably Saunders for one year of Cliff Lee? Are you still reading this?
And the funniest thing is when those national lists are published everyone who BITCHES about not getting big names in trades of our prospects ALSO bitches about the ANgels not getting represented in these lists. TWO plus f’n TWO equals FOUR. Get it?
by Rev Halofan on Dec 14, 2009 10:59 PM PST up reply actions
And if that is indeed the case Rev, then I don't understand
why we didn’t try harder to keep Lackey. While he’s not one of the greatest pitchers in the majors right now, he’s definitely in the tier just below them, and the going rate for a pitcher like him is what he’s signing for. So, knowing that we’re taking a significant hit losing him, and that we don’t have the resources to replace him, I don’t get not offering him a few million more than Boston and forcing him to turn down the money and take a lesser deal elsewhere, just to be sure that he didn’t want to stay.
I am worried about our staff. It is riddled with question marks, particularly about health. Ervin? sketchy health. Kazmir? The same. Saunders? The same. We have to prey that all 3 of these guys remain completely healthy. it’s a pretty big if.
And I really don’t get the Matsui signing either. Oh, I understand the thought process of “hey, Abreu was a steal last year, look how that panned out, now Matsui can do the same for the right price”. He’s older, he’s extremely fragile, and he won’t be hitting half the time in a little league ballpark. It’s a concern.
I know we keep hearing “we’re not done yet”. Let’s hope not; we haven’t even started yet for crying out loud. Who knows; maybe we’re going after Bay now. As long as it’s not Lowe it should be okay.
Matsui's stats are actually better on the road.
So the little league ballpark thing’s a non issue.
You answered your own question...
He’s not an ace, he’s not worth ace money and over-paying for someone like that is not something we can afford to do.
In short, signing him for that much money will actually make our team worse and not better.
Our pitching stuff is solid with a very high ceiling. I think we should go out an get another starter. That said, I’d rather we get an inexpensive stop-gap solution for this year and go sign Cliff Lee after the season than sign Lackey for too much money now and maybe never have an ace on this team.
And Canadian if Bay is signed...
That’s a wacky language… ya hoser.

well said
after the initial shock and pissed-offness, sanity took back over. really, we’re probably one pitcher away from again being the trendy pick to go a long way in the postseason (no matter what the ESPN talking heads will say about the M’s).
i, for one, still trust Reagins (and much more than Stoneman). If he says that Reckling, Conger and others will be too good to trade away, then dammit, I’m gonna stand by it too. He spent years around all of these guys, watching their talent and watching them grow. He knows this team inside and out, and better than we do.
There’s still a more to be made here, folks. We won’t finish out the offseason like this, trust me. Let’s just sit back, wait it out, and have a little faith in our guys.
Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34
Yes, this.
It’s much better looking at this situation with some time passed since the initial pissed-off-ness. I’m still somewhat worried—but I have faith in Tony, too!
RIP Nick Adenhart.

How about some perspective?
Remember last offseason? After Teix walked everyone was losing their minds – “well we can forget about the playoffs in 2009!” – how many times did I hear that?
Things like Lackey and Figgy and Vlad will sting for a few days, and I’ll feel it like the everyone else. But you know what? Chances are the sky isn’t actually falling.
