2nd worst day to be an Angel fan...
I woke up today with all the hope that the Angels would make a late push and resign one of the faces of our franchise, John Lackey. Needless to say, when I heard the early reports about him possibly signing with the Saux, I was pissed.
To hear he finally signed with the Saux, I am truly, deeply saddened... he is one of the very few Angels players I am very upset at losing. I understand that baseball now is a business, but there are certain limits. There are certain players that you just begin to identify with your team, and Lackey was one of those guys. I loved that he never wanted to come out of games, that he always wanted to go out and compete. Most of all, I loved when he got pissed off that that he got pulled from a playoff game, and his reaction was "this one is mine"... I loved his competitiveness, which is what I love about just about every single Angel. This date rates only behind the Donnie Moore game for me in the worst in the history for Angels fans. Not only did we not resign our ace, we lost out on Halladay, and have no real viable top free agents to sign that can fill the gaps of a Lackey or Figgins...

Gaps will be SO easily filled that Lackey and Figgy will be forgotten
This day will only be remembered as the day a lot of things happened at once.

Gaps may be filled, but favorite players will be remembered long after . . .
this is entertainment for me, not a business.

Rev, it looks like Mike diGiovanna was reading Halos Heaven yesterday.
Or did the term Black Monday appear spontaneously on all baseball blogs yesterday?

Saux sounds like a sauce that you get by boiling down dirty athletic socks.

Not even CLOSE to the worst day to be an Angel fan
but a tough day nonetheless.

I think the deaths of Lyman Bostock and Nick Andenhart dwarf this day
Let’s have some perspective, OK?
If Lackey wanted to remain an Angel, he had a perfectly lucrative deal he could have signed. He went to the team which offered more money, which is his right, but also instructs us that he had no qualms about leaving.
So why mourn his leaving? He wasn’t pushed, he jumped.

Many on Yankees' blogs are lamenting their loss of Matsui.
They are looking forward to their first home stand with the Angels to welcome him back.
I think maybe the Angels have done a very good thing, allowing a possible Matsui/Napoli duo at DH. Also, Matsui is another good, patient mentor for some of our younger players.
Almost every one of the “professionals” predicted Vlad wasn’t coming back.
The handwriting was on the wall regarding Figgins and Lackey leaving. The only thing that makes it sting so much is that each of them went/is going to a hated rival.

Figgins and Lackey

…where their contracts will be an albatross for each team in a few years.

Signing a very popular Japanese player
May have benefits beyond the 2010 season. In addition to the revenue generated by Japanese tourists at the ballpark (Ichiro has flocks of people cheering him on all the time at Safeco) and Angels merchandise sold online and overseas retail, this perhaps will help the Angels gain a foothold in the Pacific Rim, and raise their exposure to the level of the Yankees and Red Sox internationally.

Which in turn
might help them be able to sign more talent in future years.
I was initially unhappy, but after thinking about it, I’m liking Matsui more and more.

Exactly.
If he pulls a Dave Parker and flames out, at least we’re not stuck with him in 2011. In the meantime, we can hope for the best and hope that a signing like this one resonates in Japan (and especially in the mind of Yu Darvish, even if we have to wait a few years).

Damn you, Luis Sojo!
I still remember that moment when my little 9 year-old heart was ripped out of my chest, and stomped into the ground with that inside-the-park grand slam.

I ditched school after lunch.
And sat stunned in front of the TV after watching the Angels implode.

I loved his competive nature as well...
But you don’t ever yell at your coach, NO MATTER WHAT! Or your teammates for that matter. I really don’t think this team will miss him every 5th day to be honest. He was not a leader in the clubhouse, he was the team a$$hole if you ask me.

Matsui is a good compliment to the team but not a big sign by any means
I think they will try and do something bigger. They always do , so I would keep the faith.
"When people talk about Super Bowl dynasties they mention the 1970's Steelers, 1980's 49ers, 1990's Cowboys and the current New England Patriots, but nobody has dominated the Super Bowl like Anheuser-Busch. In recent years, Budweiser has been the MVP of Super Bowl advertising -- making another company the favorite to win the Ad Meter poll was never an option."

I can't wait until Lackey calls out his teammates in Boston....
I think I shall pop some popcorn, snuggle up under a blanket, and just read the Boston Media ’till I fall asleep at my keyboard.

That will be a game to remember...
Beltre boots a grounder and Lackey yells at him.
My money is on Beltre.
