Angels Chasing Vazquez
Well that's something. Juan Rivera would go a long ways towards making the deal happen, but there would probably have to be another piece. What do you think?

EVEN if he would waive his NTC
Ya think Scioscia and Reagins would want to deal with this bullshit:
- acquired by Chicago White Sox 12/05 after demanding trade from Arizona 11/05, under right as player traded in middle of a multi-year contract (Arizona to pay $5M of $24 remaining on contract)
No way.
Boras is his agent :(

Braves fan here
I really, really, really hope we don’t trade Javy. He was a beast in 09 and was a great mentor for Jair Jurrjens.
And, to be honest, I doubt he would waive his NTC to play in the AL West. He’d be too far away from his family.
In Frank Wren I trust.
Agreed - the NTC is a massive barrier.
But the Halos would compensate him extensively, no doubt. He’s the best possible option left, and everyone has a price.
I wasnt impressed when he was in the AL
Guys going from the AL to the NL and then destroy weak lineups aren’t magically better. They’re just facing lineups that aren’t as deep.
And didn’t he get a reputation in Chicago for choking in big games?
PASS

Jesus man
nothing short of the ghost of a cyborg child of Nolan Ryan and Cy Young wouldnnt be good enough for you huh?
You take whats available to improve your team.
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
Not necessarily.
We don’t have to take what’s available. We have in-house options that could tide us over for a season. Then, we can sign a pitcher out of the better FA class that will be available next offseason. Not that I’m against trying to get Vazquez. I’m just sayin’s’all.
No matter what happens from here on, it has been a great season.

im saying if we are trading prospects and taking on money
and likely giving up juan rivera’s bat, I would like a pitcher who isnt going to shrink when we need him most and was mediocre when he played in the AL Central.
So no, I dont think you throw assets away just to take whatevers out there. Call me crazy but there’s a reason Vazquez is Plan D. Im actually surprised so many people are interested in him despite the fact that his own manager basically ran him out of town in Chicago a little over a year ago for continuously choking down the stretch and in big games.

maybe he figured something out.

another thing to the NTC, besides location
is that it’s public knowledge that Javy and Bobby Cox have a ton of respect for eachother. I doubt Javy would wanna leave in Bobby’s final year.
And his reputation for choking in big games is because Ozzie Guillen is an asshole. Just cause Javy has an ounce of respect for himself and others around him doesn’t mean he’s not a big game pitcher. It just means Ozzie had too much to drink and felt like blaming someone besides himself.
In Frank Wren I trust.

Javi also has a ton of respect for former Angel's GM Bill Stoneman.
they go way back to the Expo’s. The little hope I hold onto is maybe Bill can convince Javi to waive his NTC, again little hope.

interesting
I didn’t know that.
Thought I’d just point out a few things from Javy and the Braves’ perspective.
Oh, and thanks a bunch for Casey Kotchman. :(

Thanks for contributing to HH.
I dont know what happened to Kotchman, he was having a solid year before he got traded to ATL. I just want another pitcher, whether it be Javi or Z.Duke.

well I know last year his mom was really struggling against a disease (cancer?) when he was traded. that could obviously be a distraction. However, she did make a full recovery, which gave him no excuse to play badly the rest of 08 and 09.
The man could take a walk and get a single or two, but had the power of a hamster.
In Frank Wren I trust.
by Scott Coleman on Dec 17, 2009 4:33 PM PST up reply actions
IIRC
The full recovery wasn’t until after the season was over. And his ‘09 wasn’t great, so what, you got LaRoche for him in a trade so you got an upgrade.
How about this, thanks for the Headache that was U-Haul (Tex).
Nick would be proud.

This isn't going to happen
He will probably kill the deal with his NTC, and Atlanta is trying to move Lowe, not Javi. Additionally we should be trying to move GMJ for anything at this point, up to and including some salary relief and a box of big league chew.
We are not trading Juan Rivera, see the following thread and the article within:

Oh if you posted it
in a fanpost it MUST be true.
MAY AS WELL DELETE THIS POST GUISE
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
Read the article
Specifically the highlighted quote
Plus as I and others layout, there is not logical replacement for Rivera’s production out there in the FA market or on the roster.

I like how you become incredibly condescending when you really want a player
I seem to remember you being fairly apocalyptic about Teixeira too, or not going after Manny., or how our offense was pathetic going into last year.
Maybe let’s start the season before we freak out? Do we think starting pitching wont be available before the deadline? Chill out people. Wait for the right players, not just ANY players.

Oh and you mean the article it links that makes...
NO MENTION OF JUAN RIVERA.
I was refuting speculation with at least a little bit of fact, not trying to be a dick. But if you’re too lazy to click two links, I’ll link straight to the article so you only have to click once.
After reading down towards the middle you see that Mike intends on having him in the lineup next year. Happy now?

Wierd cause the artice I was reading
HAS LOTS OF MENTION OF JUAN RIVERA
That article mentions Rivera so much, you almost have to think he is going to be traded.
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
FYI you linked to Rivera's stat page
The MLBTR post linked at the beginning of this thread doesn’t mention him at all. If you’re talking about ESPN’s article, I don’t pay for “Insider” and I don’t plan on starting, considering they are paid to speculate and write stuff that turns out to be wrong half of the time. See the dozens of “experts” who picked us to trade Rivera for Curtis Granderson.
I realize, one quote from Mike isn’t solid proof, but it is a good indication of what the club plans to do.
And again, who do you replace Rivera with? Bay isn’t worth it, GMJ wants out and should be out. You gotta have a plan to replace what Rivera brings to the table in performance per dollar. I don’t see anything like that anywhere.

by Commander_Nate on Dec 17, 2009 4:39 PM PST up reply actions
Yes, I know I linked to the MLB stat page
Its almost as telling as a link to your own post.
Thank you for helping me make my point.
Anyway, Bay’s bat is significantly better than Rivera’s. His defense is not.
We need pitching and we can trade our LF for an arm, then fill the LF gap with a good FA.
Just sayin.
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
I don't see how
A page of stats equals a post with an italicized quote and a link to the relevant article about the point being made, but if that’s what you were taught then whatever.
The fact that he has his NTC is a huge stumbling block and so is the fact that we still have to move GMJ. Both of these things played a role in stopping us from landing Halladay and Lackey.

by Commander_Nate on Dec 17, 2009 4:58 PM PST up reply actions
What "stopped us from landing Lackey"
was the fact the Angels front office wasn’t going to give Lackey the kind of cabbage the BoSox did.
Also Lackey’s wife is a BoSox whore, and so are her parents.
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
You're probably right there
But if we didn’t have GMJ’s contract we’d have more salary flexibility to do… something with.

The story on MLBTR is third-hand
And the other two hands it went through aren’t exactly great sources. This combined with Vazquez’s NTC make this seem pretty implausible.
Yeah
It’s not that I wouldn’t want Javi, I just don’t see it happening. I don’t want it happening if it costs Rivera because I don’t like the backup options in LF.
Landing a FA starter like Sheets or someone else for example would be easier and more realistic. Just sign them for a year or two. If we could work a 3 way deal somehow for Javi without giving up Juan, I’d be down with that.

Yeah but I don't think even NY will give him that
I mean come on, the dude didn’t even pitch in 08 and had injuries before that.
I agree that he’ll sign late but his terms will drop.

ESPN IS WHORING SALES OF ITS BULLSHIT "PAY" INSIDER WITH THIS "RUMOR"
paying insider to read this absolutely mad-up rumor is a big waste of your money folks.
HARD EIGHT
ESPN stole the Javi rumor from angelswin.com

Yeah, that's why I don't pay it
I was very close to signing up a few weeks ago.
But then thankfully I discoverd MLBTR which can give you the same, if not more information, in basically real-time for free. SI.com’s Truth & Rumors section will also usually give you 4 or 5 of the same big rumors that ESPN “Insider” has for free. They only get updated like once a day though so after the morning it’s kind of old news.

Vazquez
Extremely durable [at least 200 innings a year] and is a high-strikeout guy.
He also has 10 seasons of double-digit wins.
Most teams would probably take him to be on their pitching staff, though I doubt he is more than a No. 2 guy or No. 3 on his best days.
Or is Kendry perhaps the one who needs to sit?
He was a #1 last year even when he wasnt on the absolute top of his game.
In Frank Wren I trust.
