I switched to DirectTV this year when Charter Cable would randomly fail to broadcast Angels Games. In 2010, it is going to be Time Warner. Read the link above and switch now, folks...

MLB.tv - problem solved

(If you live out of market like me)

The only time I ever miss a game is if it’s one of those FOX Saturday Baseball games. Stupid ass San Diego cable companies tend to put on the NL game for that day instead of the Angels. Happened to me twice last year. Instead of watching Angels-White Sox, or something else that might actually interest So-Cal viewers, they put on Cardinals-Phillies or some trash.

I hate it when that happens.

Do they still use Silverlight?

Or have they gone back to either WMV or Flash?

Looks like i’m going to have to get mlb.tv — I’m not going to switch providers right now.

No more Silverlight

It was a Flash-based system last year, worked much better.

Seconded

It can be infuriating at times, but in the final analysis never again giving a s*** about what the local cable monopoly offers is a liberating experience.

Yeah it was much better this last year

It tended to run smoother than the previous two years and it was finally in HD. There were several times I hooked my laptop up to our flatscreen in the living room while we had friends over and they had no idea I was streaming off the internet.

Laptop to 50 inch TV = Sweeeet.

I used that Roku box for a while...

Similarly, no one had any idea that it wasn’t the typical television feed.

Pfft

they wanted to overcharge directv because they were owned by comcast…something like 25 cents a subscriber. And there’s no way in fuck that channel is worth 25 cents to me. I guess I’ll have to miss cycling and hockey games I don’t care about.

Time Warner Cable Sucks...

And I have it. They have been running adds asking customers what do we want them to do. Roll Over or Get Tough. They talk about Networks wanting to charge more in these tough economic times and how wrong that is. YET, I just get a notice from them about a week ago letting me know that my bill will probably go up about 10 bucks starting in the New Year. What a bunch of hypocrites. How about you take one of those dollars and give it to Fox for me. Or better yet, let me pick the channels I want a la carte. You can take all the Spanish channels I’m paying for and shove them up your ass.

Not sure yet what switch I will make, but Bye Bye Time Warner. Now if someone would blow up the satellites at kcop 13…I would be very thankful.

It's not that easy

I have TW also, and I’m not about to defend them across the board.

However, what customers don’t understand is that each of the services they carry, whether it is local channels or cable-specific channels, comes back to the table demanding more money each time a contract runs out. Last year, it was Disney (ABC, ESPN, etc.). Next time, it will be NBC-Universal (NBC, Syfy, USA Network, Bravo, etc) or CBS Networks (CBS, MTV, CMT, etc) or TimeWarner itself (TNT, TBS, etc).

It is all a game of brinksmanship between the two forces. The broadcasting companies aren’t increasing normal revenue in a down economy so they’re trying to boost it through increased carriage fees. The cable networks don’t want to lose revenue so they have to pass the increase through.

In addition, many of you may be on systems which used to belong to Adelphia, which were systems which were desperately in need of upgrades and modernization, which means TW has costs on an ongoing basis just to bring that cable system into 2010 standards.

TW is trying to make the public aware of the money trail from their billing statement to the program providers. Expect ads from Fox locally urging TW subscribers to call and demand Fox channels. And, as I say, next year it will happen again with a different media conglomerate.

Anyone know if MLB Extra Innings is affected?

I’d much rather watch on my 46" TV than on my 9" netbook or 20" desktop.

Angels baseball. We do what we must, because we can -- HaloDutch

by red floyd on Dec 20, 2009 10:56 AM PST up reply actions

It shouldn't be, since Extra Innings is MLB, not Fox

Any blackout rules (if any) would still apply to home games and Saturday afternoon games, though.

However, the New World Order for 2010 for me is going to be a used Mac Mini, using a DVI output, to feed mlb.com to a 26" HD flatscreen in the second bedroom. That way, I can watch the game through the internet but not on the laptop.

I’ll also be able to use the split screen for game in game (or four games simultaneously—I didn’t realize how great that is until I used it a few times, monitoring two or more games at the same time). Can’t do that on Extra Innings, either.

These f*cking companies make me want to jump out of a window.

I suffered through the whole Charter debacle last year, but I have since bought a house, and got stuck with Time Warner. I started seeing these ads last week, and now I don’t know what to do. I want this straightened out before the season starts, but I’m pretty sure there is an early disconnection fee, although that seems unfair seeing as either my charges or my channel lineup will be affected.

I just found out that U-Verse is available in my area, but not Fios. Can anyone vouch for the service? I hesitate to go with a dish service because I prefer a 3 in 1 bundle, and I see articles like this one almost weekly. The channel lineup for U-Verse seems decent, but I couldn’t find MLB Network, and that sucks. And how can we be sure they won’t get into it with Fox either?

Any thoughts?

Apologies in advance.

by Red114 on Dec 19, 2009 11:25 PM PST reply actions

I have Dish Network and have been happy with it except they don't have MLB Network yet.

I’m hoping they will add it in the near future. I see special discount sign up offers usually for six months and then it goes up to the full regular price after that. They all do this and it is usually just for the basic package. Dish offers three levels, basic channels, then the next level that includes all the sports channels like ESPN and FSN and some movies and specialty channels, then the top level that includes everything, HBO and all the movie channels. I got the middle level for the sports for like $60 and added Sentana Sports for rugby games for $6.

With Dish you get the cable box and satellite dish that you own forever included and they will replace anything that breaks for free. They even will come and take your dish out when you move and re-install it in your new home if you move just to keep you as a customer. I pay by check through the mail so they can’t do any hanky panky with charging my bank account. Dish has a website you can check out online for their channels and programming availability.

I can vouch for U-Verse

It’s a good service, and we haven’t had any problems. I do wish that it offered MLBTV on its basic package, but that’s not a deal killer. We had Direct TV and liked it, but they tried to run us over with fees when we tried to switch to their HD service. It was cheaper to cancel our DirectTV and get the rebate from switching to U-Verse. We’ve liked it just fine.

I live in Coxland

Known as south OC. UCLA used TW. I just got so damn tired of those horrible Roadrunner commercials.

Teacher: what could we do to make it go faster?

Student #3: we could Supercharge it!

[teacher looks to the upper corner ponderously]

Good golly that got annoying.

Which brings me to another point, why do all cable companies have horrible commercials? It’s not so much that the writing and acting are terrible (which they are), but the general premise and quality is atrocious. Cox’s “digital Max” or creepy living money bush? TW’s terrible roadrunner commercials? And seriously, the phrase “It’s Comcastic!”? And these commercials are filmed in standard def with completely unprofessional lighting and editing. It’s like the multi-billion dollar cable empires can’t shell out a couple million for a real commercial. They know they have the monoply and don’t bother advertising like a real company. But that’s no excuse, ESPN monopolizes the nightly/morning sports highlight market and even they put genuine effort into the This Is Sportscenter campaign which designed not to remind us that they exist, but to remind us that they are the best. Cable take a hint from the rest of the television world, make better commercials.

Ok. Sorry all for the rant. And to make this Angels related, I think I’m OK for the upcoming season with Cox.

The satellite networks are just as bad.

Right now on the dance channel on Dish Network they have a singing infomercial for I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter called, “Turn the Tub Around” to demonstrate that if you turn the tub of butter around you will read the label that says how much healthier it is and better tasting than other spreads. “Turn the Tub Around” is played on continuous loop and sung by Megan Mullally and her back up dancers to the tune of “Turn Your Love Around” by George Benson. They dance around grocery stores holding tubs of I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter and wait for it….there is an interactive feature you can click on to sing karakoe along with the song. No I have not tried the karaoke feature.

As a Charter customer

I feel deeply for you latest victims of the Cable Wars. It really sucked missing those 25 or so games last year, especially since one of them was Nick’s game. We never got to see him pitch. This kind of thing makes me insanely mad, Oliver Wendell Douglas mad (for you Green Acres fans).

The thing is, Charter was over a barrel because they were under bankruptcy reorganization, and they couldn’t have paid one more dime to Fox in those circumstances. They didn’t care about their customers leaving because they couldn’t do anything about it. Time Warner is under no such constriction, so if they start losing a lot of customers over this, I’m sure they’ll reconsider their position.

So all you Time Warner victims, I recommend you call your cable provider ASAP and tell them that you plan to switch to DirecTV before baseball season.

MLB.TV has every Angel game from the 2009 season archived on their website available on demand..

It’s called the off season package for $19.95, and you can watch individual games or the whole season over again if you want including Adenhart’s game. The package also includes select 2010 spring training games. http://anaheim.angels.mlb.com/mediacenter/archive.jsp?c_id=ana
I just noticed this last night when I was looking at the Angels official web page.

Directv customers outside of the LA market

if you have any friends or relatives with Directv who live in the LA market, ask them if they would order an extra receiver for “another room”. It will cost them $5.00 per month(it will cost you $60 per year), then have them plug it in for a few days, after that ship the box with the card to you, then you will have every Angels game on the Fox Sports West network without having to pay for MLB Extra Innings.

When I'm not at the stadium, I'd rather be watching my Halos back in Costa Rica!

by Dono Romantico on Dec 20, 2009 4:10 PM PST reply actions

or...... if they have a nice internet connection

you can always just have them keep it at their place, and add a Sling Box Pro-HD to it and then you don’t even need to have DirecTV and like many have mentioned in this thread you can connect a laptop to a tv and not notice a huge difference between that and a regular tv feed.
