American Studies Project

Hey HH,

I am currently taking a class called American Places which is dedicated to the study of cities in the United States.  The class requires a research paper on any place of my choosing.  It can be a school, a park, a bathroom stall, etc but we have to be able to talk about the importance of the place in the larger scope of the US.  Well guess what I decided to study?

My research project focuses on the founding of Anaheim Stadium in 1966 and the All Star Game in 1967. The paper will investigate the impact of the stadium and the franchise on the city of Anaheim.  Currently I've done research on the construction of the stadium and the city council's joint resolution with that brought the Franchise to Anaheim.  I also found newspaper clippings from the inaugural season in the new Anaheim Stadium.  There's a lot of good stuff in the Anaheim Special Collections Library.

Now here's where I need your help HH.  If anyone who can recount anything about that time would be willing to have an interview, I would be honored.  Also gathering any other resources would be awesome.  I really want to do a great job on this project because I have friends who are doing their research projects on Yankees Stadium and I want to show them that the big A is much more baller.

Thanks for hearing me out and I hope you guys can help me out.

How Cool!!!

Hey prince, what a cool project you are working on.. I am out of the country at the time and not available for the next 60 plus days. I appreciate the comments from my fellow HH members. I have recently sold my practice and retired. Doing LOTS of traveling, but my best travel will be to Arizona this next year to join my beloved Angels at Spring Training. Anaheim Stadium is a jewel in my families history. It hold many, many fond memories. Wish I could help. Sorry!!!

I was here then. I'd be game.

I was a Little Leaguer back when the stadium opened, and my father worked for the bank that helped finance construction. I grew up next door in Orange and could see the stadium grow and open from my home, and from local ball fields. I spent a lot of those early years in the first three rows behind the home dugout, courtesy of the bank’s season tickets that nobody wanted.

Had I owned the Pittsburgh Pirates, I could have saved America.

Project

Ah, a fellow American Studies student, I received my BA in American Studies from CSUF in 1990, I would love to help you out. But alas my memories of that game are filled with frustration. I remember the Angels had fans interested in All Star Game tickets fill out an interest card and with any luck they would select your card and thereby give you the opportunity to purchase tickets. Well I filled out cards for everyone I knew; myself, siblings, girlfriend, parents and grandparents. The problem was I did not advise those other people that I used their name and address. So as game day came I was talking to my father, who was not a sports fan, about my disappointment about not getting selected for the ticket raffle. It was then my dear old dad told me he had received a card from the Angels telling him he was selected to purchase All Star Game tickets, but since he was not a fan and did not remember filling any form out he threw the invitation away.

I forgave my dad since it was my fault for not notifying potential reciepients but to this day it still frustrates me.

P.S. It pains me that a Theo Epstein also had a degree in American Studies.

Background reading

You should look through this book if you need an introduction to Orange County’s social history during that time period. It focuses on the political culture, but it also describes the kind of people who were moving to the area in the 1960s and the community they built. The author teaches history at Harvard, so it would be perfectly suitable as a secondary source for this kind of assignment.

I'd suggest copying and pasting from wikipedia.

What do you need a fancy suit for, Charlie, you ain't got no job to wear it to.

nah, everyone does that now

I suggest if you don’t want to get caught, busting out the old leather bound 40 pound encyclopedia britanica and copying form that is the best.
how is anyone ever gonna catch you, no one has those anymore

Post a rough draft of your report here

That was all way before my time but I know a lot of us would love to read about it, plus a lot of the old folks that check in here from time to time could probably provide you with even more ideas & memories after reading it.

WTF? No Ross Newhan?

I cannot believe, flawed as it is (no frickin’ index?) that Ross Newhan’s The Anaheim Angels: A Complete History hasn’t been mentioned.

Witty .sig goes here.

please post your completed paper here

even the paper from the yankee stadium guy would be interesting

Who goofed? I've got to know.

by hittheg on Dec 4, 2009 12:52 AM PST reply actions

I was born a couple decades too late.

But good luck nonetheless, bud. If it comes up again (somehow) you can always talk about the impact that the 2010 Allstar game will have on Anaheim. Anyways, post your paper on the site. We’d all love to read it.

I miss Hudler already.
