The 4-Way "Dumpbuster" Trade That Didn't Happen
I couldn't think of another name for this, but I think that's pretty good don't you?
Basically, as the article linked below indicates, the Angels would have traded GMJ and likely a good chunk of his contract to the Mets. The Rays would have gotten Milton Bradley. The Cubs would have gotten Castillo and Burrell and likely flipped Burrell for something else. No word on why this didn't go down.
It's unfortunate for us that this didn't go down. No major players were named going to us in the trade but they were probably prospects at best. At the very least I would have been fine with simply having the Mets eat a good amount of GMJ's salary.
What do we do with GMJ? This at least gives me some hope that we can move him if Tony keeps being creative. Of all the players involved here, GMJ is probably a close 2nd as far as overall talent and desireability behind Bradley. Hell, his attitude is about 150% better than Bradley's which might make him more desirable to potential suitors. I have a feeling we need to get this done in order to get some needed financial flexibility.

I was reading over at Twinke Town that they have a need for a fourth outfielder.
But they need to extend a certain catcher…

- We are already freeing up a lot of payroll by not re-signing Figgins, Vald, Lackey and Oliver. While a team can never have too much financial flexibility, I don’t think it’s the Angels most pressing problem.
- GMJ is – at best – a 4th outfielder…with a prime OF contract. We’d be fortunate to get a decent prospect or 2 in return. We’d also probably have to eat a lot of his contract.
- Because of his contract, I think GMJ will remain an Angel and get about the same amout of play time as he had last year. For that, he should get on his knees and thank the demons that infected Stoneman’s critical thinking skills when he offered the terms. Reminds me of one of those AM/PM commercials…too much good stuff.
Rec'd for awesome title...
I imagine GMJ goes the way of Speier unless he promises to keep cool on the bench.
He seems to get along with all the other players. I always seem him joking it up in the dugout squeezed between his teammates. If he doesnt put up a stink then he might get retained.
We’ll see…

Yeah, that could happen
But I’d like to see him get moved. He wants to go and his good behavior over his time here means we owe it to him to at least try to move him. Plus there are simply better ways we can be spending our money.
The Cubs need a CF. There’s got to be some other teams that might be a fit too.

It's sucks
This deal didn’t get done. I just wan’t GMJ gone, don’t hate the guy but he wants/ needs out of here.
It's funny how it doesn't mention what we would've gotten out of the deal..
Salary dump and salary dump alone?
I wonder if that was the primary hang-up.
Are the Angels asking for too much? For GMJ? Gasp!
1 line siggy line because I was asked nicely. Go Angels! helpfindscottajob@gmail.com
I don't think GMJ will be on this team next year
If I were Tony I would call the Reds and see if they want to swap Francisco Cordero for GMJ, but they would probably want something else because the only guy with a similar contract that had less value than Sarge Jr. has already been traded to the Cubs.
NA 34
They could give the Reds GMJ plus money.
Since we have more money off the books than we need to give raises to arb-eligible plays, and we don’t appear to be signing any other FAs, we should just offer Matthews plus cash to someone for anyone.
No matter what happens from here on, it has been a great season.

Screw that, Matthews should offer the cash
If he wants out so bad, let him cut his salary to go somewhere he will play everyday. Otherwise he oughta shut up and be happy we have a 10 million/ yr 4th outfielder.

Agreed
It’s hard to feel too sorry for GMJ complaining that he wants badly to be traded to a team that will give him more playing time when it’s his contract that will keep that from happening. $10 million a year? Heck, this is a player not even worth $5 million a year. The Angels would probably have to agree to pay at least three quarters of that monstrosity for anyone else to want to touch him. Unless they took an equal albatross in return.
The guy hit the jackpot and got a contract that he never did and never will earn. As you said, if he is so desperate to get out of town then he can offer to rework the albatross contract that he has.
>>cue John Cleese (Tony) calling out “Albatross! (GMJ) Get it on a stick!”
“Do you get wafers with it?”
“Of course you don’t get bloody wafers with it!”
“Albatross” can be Gary’s new nickname. lol
