More deals not involving the Halos
The Mariners pick up solid relief pitching:

The Yankees get Vazquez from the Braves:

We all know that the "GM formally known as the Ninja" likes to move slow and deliberately especially as it relates to trading prospects, however this is getting bizarre. Are the Angels financially paralyzed and can't make a move to meaningfully improve the team until GMJ's salary is off the books?
Is there any sign of life from the Angel's front office?

Brandon Morrow
Headline: The Mariners lose most promising SP prospect for bullpen help.
This is a good deal for the Blue Jays and us. The Mariners have bounced Morrow around from the SP to the BP and never really gave him a chance. People are far too quick to pronounce any move by Jack Z as great. I’m not liking this one for him.
Now the Yankees acquiring Vazquez… yikes.
Yankees Rotation: Sabathia, Burnett, Vazquez, Pettitte, [Chamberlain/Mitre/Hughes].
Red Sox Rotation: Beckett, Lester, Lackey, Matsuzaka, [Buccholz/Wakefield/Bowden].
Sick.
I’m far more concerned about the AL East moves then those by the Mariners/Rangers so far.
Does the AL Central even exist? Outside of the White Sox rearranging the deck-chairs on the titanic that division has been mightily quiet.

I'd like someone to list all the Yankee prospects they've given up in recent major trades
I mean, their system isn’t all that, and yet they’re constantly trading prospects for quality ML talent. Have any of these prospects panned out? (I’m obviously too lazy/busy to look it up myself right now.)
Recent trades: Granderson and Vazquez
Well, the Yankees stole both Granderson and Vazquez this off season. Killer trades. As if they needed anymore help to be good team.
So for Granderson they gave up: Ian Kennedy, Austin Jackson, Phil Coke
For Vazquez: Melky Cabrera, Mike Dunn, Aroydis Vizcazino
When we brought up E. Santana, Saunders, Weaver; the Yankees brought up Chamberlain, Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy. Obviously our players have performed better, but people (i.e. NY sportswriters/fans) thought the Yankee players were going to be something.
So in effect, i guess trading Ian Kennendy would be like us giving away an oft-injured and underperforming Joe Saunders. Which they could do as they signed Sabathia and Burnett the previous off season. That always helps.
Austin Jackson was there no.2 prospect coming into this year. Similar to Pete Bourjos from the Angels. But with more hype. Obviously.
Phil Coke a throwaway lefty, one of many the yankees have been developing in their minor leagues. They have really spent a lot on getting projectable young minor league arms.
Vizcaino is what, 19? Really projectable (as I mentioned, just what the Yanks like to acquire and develop these days) and a way away from the Bigs.
Dunn is a converted outfielder. Dont know much about him. Assume the Braves like him.
Melky is an average CF, which is quite valuable. No problem for the Yanks as they signed Granderson and of course, have tons of money. So look to them to add a LF. From the many still available (Bay/Holliday/Damon/Dye/Byrd).
Basically it seems to come down to, great trading by the Yanks. And lots of money. They sign players to fill gaps. And trade their projectable minor league depth to add talent. They still have a number of projectable minor league arms, but only 1 “real” bat: Jesus Montero.

Good trading
Swisher: Wilson Betamit, Jeff Marquez, Jhonny Nunez
Xavier Nady (Now a FA) and Damaso Marte: Jose Tabata, Jeff Karstens, Ross Ohlendorf, Dan McCutchen
Bobby Abreu (in 2006) and Corey Lidle: C. J Henry, Matt Smith, Jesus Sanchez, Carlos Monasterious.
All three were buy low candidates, so more good trades. Although Pittsburgh seemed to get a good haul. My reaction to the Abreu trade is: WHO????
I don’t know of anyone else of the top of my head.
by TheQuestforMerlin on Dec 22, 2009 8:45 AM PST up reply actions
Abreau deal
The Abreau deal was a total salary dump by the Phillies.
Kennedy has far more trade value than Saunders due to the fact Kennedy has minimal MLB service time while Saunders is arbitration eligible.

There is nobody great available
so the FO is waiting until next season when there is a better crop of FAs available
This is not necessarily true
Halladay is already locked up. Beckett, Crawford, and maybe Lee and Webb will likely not reach free agency due to extensions with their current club. We are not getting Mauer, no way, no how. We have no need for a catcher/1B/DH type (Martinez, Pena, etc.)
So maybe Webb, maybe Lee, maybe Crawford. If it were my money, I’d jump all over Holliday now – all of his offers have really undervalued him so far… Not to say that will last, but he is a premium player, even in the context of next year’s class.
Agree
Clearly not all the projected 2011 FAs will actually reach free agency.
If Mauer does not resign with the Twins, he will end up in NY. The same with Pujols / St. Louis.
So who is the front office holding out for?
Lance Berkman (35) – $15MM club option with a $2MM buyout
Derrek Lee (35)
Joe Mauer (28)
Carlos Pena (33)
Albert Pujols (31) – $16MM club option with a $5MM buyout
Derek Jeter (37)
Jhonny Peralta (29) – $7MM club option with a $250K buyout
Aramis Ramirez (33) – $14.6MM player option
Carl Crawford (29)
Jayson Werth (32)
Brad Hawpe (32) – $10MM club option with a $500K buyout
Josh Beckett (31)
Matt Cain (26) – $6.25MM vesting option
Chris Young (32) – $8.5MM club option
I know they have a hard on for Crawford
And he would be a good target. But we certainly wouldn’t be alone in the bidding, and Tampa still has a pretty good shot at locking him up.
I expect every option above but Young’s will be exercised, and I’m not a huge fan of his.
Not sure how hard the Yankees will go for Pujols
since he plays first base
Thinking the Mets
or even Boston if they can’t get AGon
by mustard_man on Dec 22, 2009 11:13 AM PST up reply actions
Boston will blow its wad on Pujols, mark my words.
They won’t get A-Gon. If they do…then my word…they’ll trade Youkilis, sign Pujols, and stick one of the two at third if that’s possible. And then every other team will die.

Poo-Holes used to play 3rd when he first came up.
but that was about 95 pounds ago
"Precious in the sight of the Lord, is the death of His Saints." - Psalm 116:15 Rest In Peace, Nick.
Why jump all over another outfielder when there is no need for him in Anaheim?
Paying a guy $100million to play a position where there is enough talent on the team seems silly to me
Cliff Lee...
is not signing an extension with the Mariners…..
he will if they win the AL West...
doubt it will happen though.

Lee coming to the AL West
Is sort of a potential poison pill for the Angels. The Angels have been interested in him in the past, and when he departs the Mariners, he’ll definitely cost a team their first round pick (assuming the Angels or whoever finish high enough to cost a first rounder).
So, in essence, the M’s trade Phillippe Aumont, Tyson Gillies, and Juan Ramirez for one year of Lee and possible contract extension OR two high round future draft picks in 2011.
It’s was a great deal, no doubt.

Faaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhhh
All over again.

Vazquez
This Yankees 19 year-old prospect must be pretty damn good. Javy would have fetched the Braves a first rounder + arb pick after the season when he turned down arb and his ’10 salary was definitely manageable.
That said, I think this deal shows how pathetic the finances of MLB teams are at the moment.
HUGE discounts on the remaining free agents is in the future. Makes a ton of sense why Reagins is waiting to sign another SP and BP help.
No Lowe
This also clearly shows the dreaded conception of trading Rivera for Lowe is certainly not happening. Rejoice Angel fans!!!

These moves make me "Meh"
The Mariners just took a guy out of their rotation for a reliever. This actually weakens them unless they sign a good starter or have a prospect who can actually step it up, which is a gamble.
The Yankees just got a pitcher back that they’ve tried before and was mediocre in the AL, then had some success in the NL. Chances of him succeeding in the AL aren’t that great. Besides, he didn’t want to pitch here anyway, so who cares?

I definitely didnt want Javy as our "ace"
but for him to go to the yankees as a #4 starter just makes them a little more ridiculous.

While I think getting Vazquez would have been great
I won’t get too worked up over it since it is well known that he wanted to stay on the East Coast to be closer to his family. He wouldn’t play for the Angels anyways.
Maybe they're trying to get Dan Haren again
They tried for a long time before finally getting the Kazmir deal done, maybe this is the same case.
Also, they’re desperately trying to trade GMJ and its keeping them out of a lot of deals.
Angels are talking to Fernando Rodney
Now there is that major splash!
Maybe a trickle?
Drip?
In Arte I Trust.
Rodney's ERA and WHIP scare me
as does his BB rate.
Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

Yawn
The Yankees couldn’t wait to get rid of Vasquez the last time they had him. He’s older now.
Morrow for League is basically trading 6 for a half dozen. Morrow’s more valuable, frankly, if he can start. Call this a net loss for Seattle.
Morrow
Needed a change of scenery. The guy was drafted before UW stud Tim Lincecum and was treated like a ping pong ball in bouncing back and forth between starting and relieving. For as much as one in the major leagues can get a raw deal, Brandon Morrow got a raw deal by the M’s, and I’m glad to see him get a new opportunity in Toronto.
This breaks up the Diabetes Twins in the Mariner’s pitching staff. Mark Lowe is the other diabetic, and both are heavily involved with diabetes awareness events in the Pac NW. Just a factoid to clog up space in your brain.
