MLBTR makes a nice point
if the angels have rodney close and fuentes set-up, they can prevent fuentes’ 2011 option from vesting.
RIP Nick Adenhart
not sure you think he would really help more in the middle relief than what we have?
i feel better with palmer, bulger, and sully. im just not sure he would be able to do well in that role as i dont know he has ever been put in that position. does he have the longevity to pitch in that role?

Check it out man....
Fuentes in 2007 was moved to the set up, middle-relief role in Colorado after a shaky first half. He did fine in that role. Of course, Fuentes is also notoriously better in the second-half.

But then we'd be paying a middle reliever 9 million!

better than a crappy closer for 2 more. It’d also free up about 9 million for next year’s free agency

His closing % was impressive
and he has always had good stuff.
If they can pull this signing off we could have a dominant pen again.

Fuentes
Shields
Jepsen
Bulger
Nice.

Not impressed: career 4.28 ERA and 1.42 WHIP.
He throws hard, good change-up, too many walks, not as many strikeouts as the stuff should produce.
Saves is an over-rated stat as we’ve seen with Fuentes.

My only memories of Fernando Rodney are SportsCenter shots of him giving up the winning hit…

This is pretty bad for an RP
You REALLY want this guy closing instead of Fuentes? Fuentes season last season was by far his worst since 2004…And it was still better than any of Rodney’s last three seasons.
Just as often as he looks dominant in games, he gives up gopher balls. I’m not convinced he’d be better than Rafael Rodriguez next year.
By you...I didn't mean you mustard man
meant everyone who wants us to give up a pick and pay him when we don’t have to.
we dong give up a pick and i wouldn't want him to be the solo closer but as a person who is a situational setup guy mabye

first off my sentence was no where near that, your exaggerating a little much.
second i dont know why you guys feel you need to attack me on every comment i post. why dont you try promoting conversation with other fans instead of attacking them. especially when they root for the same freak en team.
GO COLTS!!! 09 IS OURS!!!
by TheAngelsColts on Dec 22, 2009 10:43 PM PST up reply actions
I guess I don't promote conversation....
because we are not having one. We are typing on a blog. It is the medium we are using to communicate. But when you write in fragmented sentences, have no punctuation, don’t seem to know when capital letters should be used, etc, it makes it very difficult to read.
I enjoy this blog. I even enjoy reading stupid comments from people. But when someone comes along who makes reading extremely difficult, it just pretty much sucks!
I’m not picking on your ideas, but you need to try harder to make what you type readable. At least your response to my obvious exaggeration was written better, but it still leaves much to be desired.
I don’t pick on some small grammatical/spelling errors (as some do on this site), but when every single post you write is so poorly written, I feel it needs to be said.

Rodney is fine...
He will strengthen our bullpen and give Soth more options and flexibility in the set-up/closer roles. He doesn’t have the best control but I remember a closer we had by the name of Frankie something or other who use to have control issues.
On any given night we will be able to have a variety of different combos in that situation. Jepsen/Fuentes, Fuentes/Rodney, Shields/Rodney, Rodney/Fuentes, Shields/Fuentes…
And imagine this. Kaz reaches 110 pitches by the fifth inning. So inning 6 through nine goes Jepsen//Shields/Rodney/Fuentes…or something like that. Sounds strong to me.

"I remember a closer we had by the name of Frankie something..."
“…who had control issues.”
C’mon, that’s a pretty dim comment. They aren’t remotely similar talents.
K-Rod: SO/BB: 2.80 WHIP: 1.13
Rodney: SO/BB: 1.85 WHIP: 1.42
Rodney’s control issues are just part of an otherwise mediocre package, and it’s pretty clear that he doesn’t thrive as a spare part. He had exactly one season where he had success in save situations — meanwhile in the same season, he sucked in non-save situations. And there’s every indication that he will used liberally in non-save situations.
Rodney is just this year’s Esteban Yan.
I'm good with this move. It means more options in the late innings
Think about it, if your late game options out of the pen are Fuentes, Shields, Rodney and Jepsen, then you’re pretty friggin’ loaded.
Bulger, Palmer and/or one more guy from the minors can handle middle and long relief.
Now if we pick up a low-priced FA starter I’d say we’re set.

That is incorrect
Losing a Type B gets a team a supplemental pick.
The reason it is called a SUPPLEMENTAL pick is because it comes in a SUPPLEMENTAL round … a round that only exists for these types of picks. There is no supplemental pick to lose… you can only get one, not lose one.

This move makes no sense to me.

Rollercoaster Rodney!
You can have him! He’s very wild. He can be lights out, or hitting batters and loading the bases. Then he just gets lucky and the batter pops up or grounds out. If it is not a “save” situation, take a pill, take a drink or get ready to start swearing alot.

All this banter about Fernando Rodney made me go back to look at Fuentes' history.
His stats reveal that in many, many categories that you would use to evaluate a closer, Fuentes regressed noticably in 2009 compared to previous years: ERA, IP, H, ER, BB, SO, WHIP, SLG, OBA, K/BB, BB/9, K/9, and H/9.
It was stated many times last season that they expect Jepsen to eventually become their closer. If I were Reagins, I wouldn’t won’t Fuentes’ 2011 option (finishing 55 games) to vest either.
Oh, Fernando Rodney. How seductive he is. He always puts up gaudy strikeout numbers, but his lousy control brings him down to league average ERA and WHIP. Oh well, the Angels aren’t exactly overflowing with bullpen talent at the moment. I just hope they don’t spend like $9 million on him and ask him to close.
No way at age 32 he gets anything close to that money.
BTW, I grow more pissed by the day at the failure to add 1 million and 1 year to Figgy. Really stupid move. And now no lackey and no olly.
For those who think we’ll win the west with what we have, I have one question:
Would we have won the west last year (and gotten to the LCS) without Figgy, Lackey, and Oliver? The only answer is “HELL NO!!”
Lackey: 11-8, 174 IP, 3.83 ERA, Missed like 6 weeks on the DL
You don’t think anybody else can replicate that, maybe minus the DL part?
Shields is coming back. If Rodney comes here I’d say the pen is covered.
Figgy, yeah I see that. But we have multiple leadoff candidates. One of them will stick.

Lackey got us past the Red Sox
He was our No. 1 starter and pitched like it. Figgy was an all star at the plate and in the field. No way this team is as good without both of them. The FO hosed the fans with below market offers. Just like CC last year. Would the halos have a 2nd title with CC in 2009? Hell yes!
Torii Hunter, Jered Weaver, Bobby Abreu, Erik Aybar, Juan Rivera, Vlad...
Also got us past the Red Sox. Jered pretty much matched Lackey’s performance, and the rest of those guys all scored or drove in key runs. With the exception of Vlad, they are all coming back for at least the next two seasons. We already replaced Vlad so there’s no hole there.
Look I’m not saying Lackey sucks. I wanted him back, but his demands, like those of many players nowadays were simply ridiculous. I already pointed out his stats. He wasn’t near as critical to what our team did this year as people think and was only slightly moreso last year. There are over 1,000 players in the majors and thousands more in the minors. Most of them are average, which for all intents and purposes, Lackey has been for the last two years.
We can find another average starter to match or exceed what Lackey has done for us over the last two seasons without strapping ourselves to a 5 year $85 million weight.

You're kidding yourself.
Am I reading this right?
There are over 1,000 players that you would put in the same tier as Lackey?
"Precious in the sight of the Lord, is the death of His Saints." - Psalm 116:15 Rest In Peace, Nick.
Move on
It’s over.
More than likely you would have been cursing these players by the end of their contract had the FO matched the offers. The FO made fair offers (or no offer at all) for the years & money which they thought they would get maximum production from these players.
They chose to take the extra year(s) & money. It sucks losing fan favorites but I’m glad the FO let them go. Let’s see what kind of success the kids can have.
R.I.P. King Ad-Rock #34
So we're only going to have a 22 man roster?
SOMEBODY will get their AB’s and IP’s. There may be a drop off (we really don’t know right now), but I really doubt it’s going to be as bad as some seem. And the replacements could be better.
Can Wood replace Figgins’ OPS+ of 108? Maybe not, but there’s a good possibility that he’s close. Or better.
Can Shields replace Oliver’s 73 IP and 2.71 ERA? Maybe not, but there’s a good possibility that he’s close. Or better.
Can Santana replace Lackey’s 3.83 ERA and 176 IP? And conversely, can Palmer duplicate Santana’s 5.03 ERA as the 5th starter? Maybe not, but there’s a good possibility that they’re close. Or better.

It isn't that stupid
…if you bother to do the math correctly.
The Angels offered $24M/3 yrs. Seattle offered $36M/4 yrs.
That is an additional $12M, not $1M. You can attempt to trivialize it as you did, but changes like that can make a significant difference to payroll.
More to the point, I seriously doubt the Chone Figgins you’re thinking of will much resemble the guy who will be wearing his uniform in 2013 (that 4th year you think the Angels should have guaranteed). I suspect the reason that the Angels didn’t guarantee a 4th season is that they doubt his wheels in 2013 will be close to what they are today, and speed is a significant part of Figgins’ game. He’ll be 32 before the first pitch of the season is thrown, which means he’ll be 35 entering that guaranteed 4th season. Still think he’s a lock to be the sparkplug of the Mariners then?
I don’t. I completely understand the line the Angels drew in the sand. Good for Figgins for making as much money as he could, but good for the Angels for not doing something stupid just because the fans would eat it up.
