Our Fifth Starter?
Ok so our in house candidates are either:Trevor Bell, Matt Palmer, Sean O Sullivan, Trevor Reckling, and Anthony Ortega. In my mind that aint gonna cut it. Yes Matt Palmer racked up the wins, he was 11-2 and seemed to be our good luck charm, I dont know if the same will happen in 2010, we all hope so! I read an article by Lyle Spencer and he said Matt Palmer had the highest chance of being the fifth starter if the Angels do not pick up any other pitcher. He also said Vicente Padilla would be a good one for the Halos, but I do not think so. This is the guy who nobody respects in the clubhouse come on! My only choices for a free agent starter would be Ben Sheets, Jarrod Washburn, Joel Pineiro, and Jon Garland. I do believe Palmer would be good if he pitches with the same heart he showed in 2009. Ben Sheets who had elbow surgery to repair the torn flexor tendon was a free agent after the 2008 season but no team picked him up because of the injury. Now he has been rehabbing for two years and I think he would be ready to pitch in the Big Leagues. Washburn, a fan favorite, has shown his ability to pitch as he was second in the majors in ERA until he was traded to Detroit last year. Joel Pineiro has only had one good season and that was last year as he was 15-12 with a 3.49 ERA for the Cardinals, the only bad thing about him is he wants 4 yr/37mil and he has never shown consistency throughout his career. Jon Garland another former angel has won double digit games every year since 2002 but his career ERA is 4.42 just a little higher than league average which is 4.28 according to Baseball Reference. What do you fellow Angels fans think??
Other Pitchers to consider: Aroldis Chapman, Erik Bedard, Pedro Martinez

for me i choose other
i think palmer would do a great job as our 5th starter as he did last year however, i dont see it happening as i think even they proved that they felt he filled the role of long reliever better (possible partly why they felt they could let oliver go without any talks).
and i wouldn’t mind seeing a sheets however as shocking as the pick i make is i picked Kelvim Escobar (under 1 scenario that looks a little more probably now. that is that he has no set back during his stint with the winter league. i can promise we will see talk about him closer to the end of the winter league and i would love them to pick him back up if he doesn’t have any more issues with the injury)
i am also sure we will see reckling up in the majors for a stint this season. the way he is moving through our system it wouldn’t suprize me in the least

Matt Palmer went 11 and 2 and pitches for league minimum salary.
The biggest difference between him and a free agent starter.

He also beat Verlander, Sabathia and Lincecum last year.
With VERY little run support. Some days pitchers get runs, some days they are Kelvim Escibar reincarnate and can’t buy run support.
Nick would be proud.

Turning to my good friend, Statisticles, Greek g-d of Baseball Numbers...
As a starter, Matt Palmer went 9-1, with a 4.66 ERA over 75.1 innings. WHIP was 1.354, and the K/BB was 44:32.
As a reliever, Matt Palmer went 2-1, with a 2.74 ERA over 46.0 innings. WHIP was 1.261, and the K/BB was 25:23.
Take a look at http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.cgi?n1=palmema01&t=p&year=2009 and check out the amount of runs the Angels scored in each game MP started and won.
I think he’ll be a great long to middle reliever for the Angels in 2010, but he should be the third or fourth option at best for the 5th starter spot.
1 line siggy line because I was asked nicely. Go Angels! helpfindscottajob@gmail.com
Palmer sucked as a starter.
He got wins because of massive run support. He was much more effective in the pen. I, for one, think he should stay in the pen. We need to go outside the organization for a 5th starter. I wouldn’t mind Bedard or Sheets. Maybe even Washburn.

The Angels are in talks with Tom Glavine trying to persuade him out of retirement for a one-year $10 million deal.
Not really, but would it surprise you?
This off-season we seem to be focusing our attention on has-beens/never was.
Fernando Rodney.
Fernando freakin’ Rodney.
I've got nothing.
it may not be too bad it isn't like he will be a full time closer for us blowing saves or something if he struggles he will be like any other guy in the 7th or any other inning and be yanked

Well, of course not.
We already have a guy that can butcher the ninth inning, now we have one for the seventh and eighth.
Remember when Lackey was cussing out Scioscia for taking him out of the game? Every starter is going to be like that, in total fear of ensuing disaster.
I’m going to say a prayer tonight for Scot Shields healthy return.
I've got nothing.
we already know he is returning healthy just dont know if he will have full command back which i hope he does.
rodney will share the closer role and set up role which could help i think. also what happened with lackey was not cause of the closer

I have seen no written or spoken evidence that Shields is returning for sure.
I think we have to wait until spring training for that to be certain. I am wondering if this is why the Angels are so interested in signing Rodney in the first place.

Jarrod Washburn
He would provide some nostaglia, though Bell or O’ Sullivan should get the first crack.
Palmer is more of a swing man and his versatility makes him most valuable, eating up innings out of the bullpen and/or making a spot start here and there.
Or is Kendry perhaps the one who needs to sit?
Wasn't Washburn kind of a jerk when he was here, though?
And isn’t he a Boras client, or somesuch? I dunno if I’d want him back. Could be cool, though.
RIP Nick Adenhart.

No interest in bringing Wash back...

4th & 5th?
Every year at least one (if not two) of our starters are on the DL come April. I think we need to sign another starter for depth reasons.
I'm into the pain...

Sorry guys, but the Post Nazi Has Arrived...
Dear angelspopbottles,
First off, write a fucking coherent post.
Secondly, our four starters can, and most likely will, cut it. Look at our starting rotation in 2002 when we won the whole thing. How many solid pitchers do you have in that core? Two? Maybe? Now look at the Skanks last year. They had three decent starters and then played shuffle with the other two.
Finally, look at your post. Now compare it to several other posts on this website and ask yourself if it meets the standard of a decent post on HH.

i jumped on him
and then he said he is 15 and really trying here so i hid my comments in the thread critiquing him… but obviously it was not just me…

Have paragraphs become an abstract concept?
While the criticism can be angry from general frustration, the underlying point is that some of us would like to read what the author has posted, but it is packed into a disorganized stew of words and ultimately becomes too much trouble.
I see BHM writing out of love.

Give the guy a break
The problem is not the opening post but some of the ones following it, which are a bit messy and grammatically poor. I think the young man who wrote the introductory post should be given props for his effort (I see many far worse written by college students on a daily basis…); it is interesting, has a nice style, and contains some valid research and valid reasonably well-articulated points. I could easily poke holes in many of the other posts we see here which align themselves more potently with the concept of “a disorganized stew of words” in their imaginative fervor than the “Our Fifth Starter?” posting above.
Options suck
None of those options get me very excited… I know lots of people like the idea of Sheets… but I’m not down with the risk. I hope Kazmir can step up his game and become an ace. He has awesome numbers in 2005-2008.
