Star-divide

what do you guys think?? these are very respectable projections..

We stack up well against the bosux and the yank these.  i see ourselves winning the division the last week of season and desperately needing a strong arm before the trade deadline..  Hopefully we can stay healthy and make a another run like in 05' and last year when we made it so close to going back to the WS..  Let's hope Arte and Tony have something up their sleeves!! GO ANGELS !

if brandon wood hits .271 I'll buy everyone a beer

i think .250 is more reasonable for him in a first full year….and that’s if scioscia doesn’t hand 3rd base to izturis so he can lead off

RIP Nick Adenhart

I think he'll hit

closer to .280 than .250…

He didn't say he'd hit .280

He said he’d hit “closer to .280 than .250.” Meaning .266 or higher. I think .265 is a decent over/under for Wood this year, assuming he’s a starter.

Looking over your lineup...

Yes.
Perhaps.
Probably lower.
Definitely lower.
I don’t see it.
No chance.
Possibly.
It’s possible.
Not likely.

I've got nothing.

Ehhh....

I don’t want to rely on the possibility that our lineup will all have career years.

by Slyintine on Dec 24, 2009 3:30 PM PST reply actions

I don't see that

as even being close to everyone having a career year….

Look at Aybar’s last three seasons and tell me that 295 with 4 is a career year. He did better LAST year.

Abreu is certainly capable of those numbers, seeing as how he did it last year.

Hunter’s numbers are basically him just staying healthy. When he was healthy last year he exceeded those numbers last year, as he was an All-Star until he got hurt.

K-Mo finished with higher numbers than then ones posted LAST year.

Matsui with 26 homers figured in to me is assuming a decline. He hit 28 last year in only 456 ABs and the guy raked on the road so he wasn’t a creation of Yankee Stadium.

Rivera just needs to do pretty much EXACTLY what he did last year to get to those numbers.

Kendrick will demolish those numbers if he is 2nd half Howie, and the numbers posted I think are pretty much a lower 1/4 projection.

Napoli has hit better than that the last 2 years…… and 23 homers is something he’s very capable depending on abs.

Brandon Wood I think could do anything from hit 175 to 260 with next to no power or 35 homers. He’s a crap shoot in my opinion.

My feedback... if anyone cares.. =)

SS: Erick Aybar 295 4hr (more like .280)
RF: Bobby Abreu 305 14hr (these projections are actually low – I say .315 and 19)
CF: Torii Hunter 300 29hr (Avg good guess, HR are too high – 23)
1B: Kendry Morales 300 33hr (agree)
DH: Hideki Matsui 270 26hr (agree, if healthy)
LF: Juan Rivera 280 26hr (good)
2B: Howie Kendrick 289 10hr (low.. I say he breaks .300, again if healthy)
C: Mike Napoli 265 23 hr (close, depending on ABs)
3B: Brandon Wood 271 21hr (Way too high on both, .230 and 16HR)

Review, my two cents

Aybar – .300 should be a goal this year, and hopefully 50 walks. Double digit triples.
Abreu – Your prediction looks good. .300, 15 HRs.
Hunter – Torii has never hit .300, .280 25 HRs would be a good year.
Morales – Likely minor regression. Numbers similar to Torii Hunter.
Matsui – .275, 18 HR, great OBP.
Rivera – .290, 22 HR
Kendrick – .310 (this is his year, I’m feeling it), 15 HR
Naps/Mathis – Combined .250, 25 HR
Wood – .260, 18 HR, surprisingly decent OBP.

by Slasher52 on Dec 24, 2009 4:19 PM PST reply actions

aw, what the heck...

Aybar – .305, 6 HRs (OBP near .355)
Abreu – .301, 18 HRs (OBP right near .400)
Hunter – .302, 26 HRs (more HRs, breaks 100 RBIs)
Morales – .310, 37 HRs (stays consistent with/passes last year’s production)
Matsui – .280, 26 HRs (a picture of consistency, reaches ~95 RBIs)
Rivera – .278, 27 HRs (builds on a solid year, assuming he’s not traded)
Kendrick – .327, 13 HRs (finally stays healthy, hits ~50 doubles)
Napoli – .268, 23 HRs (Mathis gets injured, Napoli gets consistent PT and thrives)
Wood – .260, 24 HRs (yeah, I’m drinking the Kool-Aid. league average OBP)

Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

by howiestheman on Dec 25, 2009 8:56 AM PST up reply actions

I'll take that bet, too - with a twist

Wood will hit more HR’s than Morales, also.

Not that I’m a Kendry-hater. It’s just that Morales, throughout the minors, has been more of a high-average guy. I could see Kendry hitting .332, 22 HR’s, 111 RBI’s.

Howie? He, too, is starting to exhibit some power. After he got back from SLC, he hit 6 HR’s in 165 AB’s. That translates to over 20 HR’s over a full season. Could we finally see Howie break out for a full season? Try this one on: .350/.400/.550. Don’t believe me? Those were his 2nd half numbers this past season. Howie just might be an MVP candidate someday, after all.

Great point.

Stating the obvious…Kendrick should receive more playing time this year, assuming that he could stay healthy, simply due to the subtraction of Chone Figgins. If Wood holds down 3B and Izzy is the supersub, I see no reason why the team wouldn’t lean heavily on Kendrick and give him 500-550 ABs.

And it would be fantastic to see Kendrick get anywhere near those numbers you posted, heck, .315/.355 would be phenomenal.

I guarantee....

Wood will not hit more home runs than Morales.

What’s our bet?

by marshgr on Dec 25, 2009 8:35 PM PST up reply actions

You GUARANTEE Wood won't hit more HR's?

Wow. As an Angel fan, you should hope I’m right.

I’m pretty sure Brandon has more “natural” power than Kendry. Morales, though, is obviously a better overall hitter. But I’ll take a HR bet with Wood. AAA stats:
Brandon: 1 HR every 16.2 AB’s
Kendry: 1 HR every 25.9 AB’s

If Wood gets a shot (no guarantee with our Skipper), then I think he will hit plenty of HR’s. He may strike out a lot, and may not hit for high average. But homers? Not a problem with him.

Kendry showed what he could do last year if given an opportunity. It’s Brandon’s turn now.

Don't get me wrong

I am a huge Angel fan and really hope I am wrong about Wood. If Wood is hitting under .240, he will be replaced by Izzy. Which means… he will not hit as many home runs as Morales. Kendry is a pure hitter who will stay in the lineup for his bat AND his improving glove.

Wood will K way too much and will not be a regular starter.

my two cents ...

Aybar — .310, 7 hrs, .375 OBP (a budding star who will respond by working on selectivity and OBP)
Abreu — .290, 19hrs, 90+ RBIs
Hunter — .292 24 hrs, 100+ RBIs
Morales — .285, 32 hrs, 90+ RBIs (2nd year decline a reality, but still a solid season)
Matsui — .270, 26 hrs, 90+ RBIs (brings consistency and solid work ethic)
Rivera — .285, 25 hrs, 85+ RBIs (solid year from a solid player)
Kendrick — .315, 12 hrs, 50+ doubles
Nap/Mathis — .265, 25 hrs, 75+ RBIs
Wood — who the hell knows? Will likely hit from 20 to 30 hrs, but his BA could be from .220 to .270. The worse he does, the more he’ll be spelled by Izturis.

The bottom line is the Angels offense will be solid — on a par with Seattle. Izturis will add support at all three infield positions and hit a solid .290+. Their pitching is more of a question mark, especially relief. It could be really inconsistent, especially if Jepsen has an off year and Shields isn’t his old self. Then again, if Jepsen steps up and Shields is his old self, the bullpen will also be solid.

The starters are also a big question mark. They could be great if Kazmir, Weaver and Santana have “on” years, and Palmer has at least a .500 record. They could also be mediocre. We won’t know until it happens.

As for Seattle now being the team to beat … not so quick IMHO. They still have to beat the Angels to gain that accolade …

lineup

I like the look of this lineup. Hopefully there is enough pop there. Before we are done, Mathis and Izturis will make a big impact on the lineup. Wood will have to beat Maicer out, IMO.

What do we do for one more starter? Ideas? Bedard, Sheets, Padilla, Washburn, Piniero, or one of ours: Ortega,, Palmer, Reckling?

by Steve from Irvine on Dec 25, 2009 10:39 AM PST reply actions

Bedard won't be ready til May

at the earliest. Signing him wouldn’t be smart.

I like Sheets, if his price drops. He’s reportedly looking for $10+MM/yr. That’s ridiculous.

Out of our guys, I think it’ll either be SOS or Palmer. Reckling needs one more year, and Ortego just isn’t that good

Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

by howiestheman on Dec 25, 2009 11:35 AM PST up reply actions

Reckling is the long term answer.... I hope

Reckling looks like the real deal, I can’t wait to follow him in AAA and see him in Arizona at Spring Training. Anybody going?

I wouldn’t mind starting the year with Palmer at #5.

Light up the Freakin Halo!

by marshgr on Dec 25, 2009 8:36 PM PST up reply actions

I wouldnt mind seeing Washburn back

he seems undervalued right now and has always bordered on ace-dom. I wouldnt have any problems seeing him in an angels uniform again.

As for the others, maybe sheets if were confident in the health of the other 4. Piniero wants too much money and years. Bedard wouldnt be bad if we can get him on an incentive deal. Padilla has never impressed me.

I dont know that any of ours are ready. Palmer is a better reliever and invaluable as a long man from the pen- what was his BP era- like 2.12?- and ortega and reckling shouldnt be rushed. I dont think the FO will jeopordize their futures by pushing them too far too quickly.

A quick note… Lyle Spencer on the angelsbaseball website mentioned Chris Young of the padres as a guy on the halos radar… any thoughts on that?
