These decisions aren't made at random
I have to guess the front office has concerns about Shields’ knee recovering from surgery or Fuentes’ consistency. This is clearly a case of stockpiling a closed whose ego doesn’t object to setting up (see: Wagner, Billy).

I would have preferred Billy Wagner.
But I think he was type A, which makes zero sense considering he only pitched for two months last year.
Nick would be proud.

I dont mind it
I dont think the club was crazy enough about Bay in the long term or Holliday in the AL to commit the cash and instead decided to go with the in-house guys to start the season.
Like I’ve said before, you never know which players will be on the trading block come July or next offseason. We saved our prospects this offseason and will have a lot of draft picks coming up. The free agent class may be weak by the time we get there but you never know when a Josh Johnson or Grady Sizemore-type player may suddenly become available to save cash and rebuild.
