What'd ya get?!

What did Santa/Hanukkah-Man/Flying-Spaghetti-Monster bring you this holiday season?  I know it's been a trying year, but hopefully we were all able to give and get a little Halo gear this winter.  I am now the proud owner of an official Angels Snuggie, and I know I'm going to be warm next October if ya catch my drift.  Did anyone else give or receive any fun Angels stuff this year?

Brother-in-law bought me the 2002 WS DVD.

And my wife gave me the go ahead to buy a jersey. I told her to let me buy it because she would have said “OK” then turned around and bought me a Sox or Yanks jersey because she would find it funny.

Nick would be proud.

I bought the Wii for my wife last year...

…plus Wii Fit. She was addicted to it…until the baseball season started. Now, it gets occasional use. Some of the games are pretty fun, especially the balance games. Have fun!

Things every Angel fan must own (and you likely already do):

For game days:

  • Fitted cap
  • T-shirt
  • Jacket

At home:

  • Beer glasses (I just collected a bunch from the Budweiser Pavilion… light up beer pong!)
  • Shot glasses (for winters like these)
  • Blanket
  • DVDs of glory years

On the go:

  • Flag for your house/tailgating
  • Bumper/Window Stickers

To me, these are basic essentials and are in proper order. Buy your game day gear, then your home goods, then your on-the-go swag.

Got everything but...

the beer glasses and shot glasses, those are gonna be my first glasse when I own my first house. I was thinking about a new sweatshirt and the thermal long sleeve, those are so comfortable. Also, the golf package that is an essential for me.

you guys played ONE hard game.

Oregon had the second hardest schedule in the nation, and still won the best top-to-bottom conference by 2 games, which hadn’t been done since the early ’90s.

weird... i haven't heard that one before...

the Pac-10 is good, for sure. and this year, it was better than any other year in recent memory, but come on… we haven’t lost a regular season game in 2 years. 2 YEARS!

we can only schedule so many good teams. we HAVE to play our conference, which sucks, admittedly. not much we can do about that, especially when teams won’t schedule us.

and we owned you 2 years in a row, both in our stadium and yours. care to explain that away? =D

Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

by howiestheman on Dec 26, 2009 12:53 AM PST up reply actions

I have no reasonable explaination,

other than you were better on that particular day. happens alot.

But if BSU were in the Pac-10 (Pac-11 is suppose it would be), it would lose many games. I understand that it’s not the school’s fault, but there’s a reason the Broncos are what, 1-4 in Bowl Games since 2003? Albeit, all were very close games.

The bottom line is, BSU needs to start scheduling a highly ranked BCS/FBS team late in the season to prove the doubters and nay-sayers wrong (or right, depending on the outcome).

The Broncos played only ONE team all year that was ranked at some point in the season (#16 Oregon, W).
This year’s Rose Bowl will be the 6th game Oregon has played against a ranked opponent, including #5 USC (W), #6 Cal (W), and #16 Oregon State (W).

The voters have to take that into consideration, yes?

No BCS school wants to play Boise St late in the year for a Non Conference game......

Its amazing to me how people just assume its Boise not wanting to play anyone……….yet its more like the BCS schools dont want to schedule Boise St period………because they have nothing to gain from beating a Boise St, but they have a TON to lose……

Its not all just on Boise people.

Yeah, I just stare at my desk, but it looks like I'm working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch too, I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work. - Peter Gibbons

^ ^ THIS ^ ^

Next year, we have Oregon State (at home) on September 25, and then we have Virginia Tech (on the road, in DC) on October 2. Are those games good enough?

Plus, there’s only so much we can do about scheduling those teams late in the year… usually, after the first 5 weeks or so, conference play gets going heavily, and nobody really has an opening. That’s why we play our BCS teams so early

Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

by norcaliangelsfan on Dec 26, 2009 10:33 AM PST up reply actions

Why?

Why would a school have nothing to gain from playing Boise St. late in the season? You think if this year, Cincinnati, (or any team looking for a chance at a higher ranking) had played Boise St in week 8 or 9 when they were both top 10 teams, that it wouldn’t have altered their rankings at all? Of course it would have! Strength of Schedule is what keeps schools like TCU and BSU out of National Championship games.

And I stated in my post, “I understand that it’s not the school’s fault”. But to a degree, they can make changes. You don’t think there’s a single top 100 school who wants to play BSU? You’re kidding yourself.

Plus, there’s only so much we can do about scheduling those teams late in the year… usually, after the first 5 weeks or so, conference play gets going heavily, and nobody really has an opening. That’s why we play our BCS teams so early

How to schools find openings in their schedules to play Notre Dame?

BSU plays EIGHT conference games per year. With their other FIVE games, they could only schedule ONE respectable program. Come on. If you can’t manage to schedule any better schools than Bowling Green, Miami (OH), UC Davis, and Tulsa, you don’t deserve any more than you get.

"Precious in the sight of the Lord, is the death of His Saints." - Psalm 116:15 Rest In Peace, Nick.

by angels4adam on Dec 26, 2009 4:25 PM PST up reply actions

The problem is

Everyone complains about BSU schedule and wants them to play the top schools – USC, Ohio State, Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, etc – but as was proven this year, those schools just have to win in their conference and schedule cupcakes the rest of the way, and they’re in. Look at Florida’s schedule. Look at Alabama’s. Look at Texas’.

These schools have everything to lose by scheduling BSU late in the season. If we were to beat them in the middle of their National Championship hunt, they’re screwed. And we STILL wouldn’t get the chance to get into the NC game. It’s worthless for them.

On the other side, even if we were to schedule more mid-level BCS teams – UCLA, Clemson, Iowa, etc – we’d catch crap, like we do now, for playing teams that “aren’t good enough” or “aren’t respectable”.

It’s a no win when you’re a dominant school in the non-BCS conferences.

Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

by howiestheman on Dec 26, 2009 6:00 PM PST up reply actions

I completely understand that,

but when BSU loses 4 of their last Bowl Games, how can the voters justify giving them a bigger game?

The entirety of the BCS system is flawed for sure, and that is the major issue.

"Precious in the sight of the Lord, is the death of His Saints." - Psalm 116:15 Rest In Peace, Nick.

by angels4adam on Dec 26, 2009 8:14 PM PST up reply actions

it's not like

we were playing Marshall and Temple in our bowl games… TCU was legit last year, East Carolina in ‘07 had Chris freakin’ Johnson…

but yeah, the BCS sucks. big time. I’m all for a playoff.

Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

by howiestheman on Dec 26, 2009 9:41 PM PST up reply actions

To answer this question......its easy

Why would a school have nothing to gain from playing Boise St. late in the season?

Lets say a team like Cinci does play BSU and LOSES in the middle of the year……..bye bye to any shot at a national championship……this year is a classic example of why teams play cupcakes during the Non Conference……..one loss and your NC hopes are adios…….

How many teams were undefeated this year? 5

How many teams get to play for a NC……..2….thats it.

A team cannot afford to play a team like Boise St..if it has NC hopes..because there is a good possiblity they could lose.

No Angels stuff here, but my kids were all here for Christmas, and ...

I made the traditional Roast Beast and Yorkshire pudding, but you know it isn’t a party unless you have the traditional family snit-fit or the ambulance comes, or the fire truck comes. We had all three so it must have been a swell party.

My dad tripped and fell flat on his face in my dining room. When we sat him up I checked his eyes for dilation but they were fine, and then we saw that he had dislocated his ring finger on his left hand. I thought half the people in the house were going to either faint or throw up, but as soon as he realized what had happened he said, “No problem.” and popped it back into place, which made everyone else ready to faint or throw up, but he beat them to it and did both. So my sister stopped insisting we load him into a car to take him to the emergency room and agreed that we needed to call 911.

The fire truck arrived first with the paramedics, and by then Dad had un-fainted and was resting comfortably on his back, his neck supported by a small cushion and the professionals chased everyone out of the room except me, then I was asked to go talk to one of them in the living room while they talked to Dad.

When the ambulance arrived the crew stopped at the front door and inhaled deeply. Dinner was about 45 minutes away, theoretically, and one of them said, “Wow! It smells GOOD in here!” It was the garlic on the roast calling his name. My sister promptly invited him to stay which made everyone laugh. We already had the usual suspects plus three strays including a vegetarian, a Jew with nowhere to go on Christmas Eve (!) and an ex-count from Austria, and had figured out how to seat 14 in the one room, but just.

Just then my middle child poked her head out of the kitchen and asked me if we had been planning to have potatoes. Bless her, if she hadn’t asked we wouldn’t have had them or much of anything but the roast at that point. 45 minutes. Right. In that time I managed to produce mashed potatoes, two dressed green salads, 12 individual Yorkshire puddings, a pan of baby squashes, and a pan of honey-roasted pears. I only managed to pull off the potatoes with help from a couple of the guests who stepped up to help get them peeled, and my daughter who did the mashing.

Before that, though, Dad refused to go to the hospital and the ambulance crew explained that by law they couldn’t force him. I thought he looked ok by then, and the ER is just around the corner from us, so we agreed.

The emergency crews left but only after threatening to hijack the potatoes, and Dad stayed put in the chair for the rest of the evening.

I will admit that I did have a momentary thought that he might die right then because I couldn’t quite tell what was going on with him when he fainted. I thought it was a faint but I remember my mom passing out in my car and never waking up again, because of a fall the day before.

Then my niece got her little feelings hurt and stomped out to go eat at a local restaurant, but the person she was mad at was not bothered by her absence and she only hurt her mother and herself.

The roast was incredibly good, everything else was great, the niece came back to take my sister and my dad home, and the Austrian told me he hadn’t had so much fun at Christmas in many years.

I guess we know how to party.

People gave me some stuff I didn’t need, and there is more candy in the house right now than at Hallowe’en.

Dad’s fine, and it’s all good.

Imagine having a 6'5" 250 pound man in your dining room, one who sounds just like our dear Governator,

and then imagine that you’re a foot shorter and he keeps getting in your way.

And I got a swell new lens for my camera from my husband. 55-250mm.

I can hardly wait until baseball season opens.

52 inches of sony's finest liquid crystals...

and all the accoutrements thereof.

Had I owned the Pittsburgh Pirates, I could have saved America.
