The Anaheim Angels became the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim prior to the 2005 season.

TRIVIA ANSWER: Garrett Anderson was the last California Angel...
And if Im not mistaken GA and Darin Erstad were the only ones to go through all the name changes from 1996—the last year as the California Angels to 2005—the first year as the LAAoA. Timmy missed it by one year.
I always liked the California Angels name. However, if you believe in voodoo, it seems to be cursed since we have done much better since the name changes…

The last LA Angel is a little tricky.
Fregosi was the last one with continuous service until he was traded for Ryan. However, Paul Schall was traded, but then came back for one more season in ’74 or ’75. So, I guess the right answer is Schall.
Los Angeles Angels
Name change was announced in a press release in late August of 1966. Players were still the Los Angeles Angels in mid-66.

over whether they should be called the Southern California Angels or the California Angels. Also before the move to Anaheim, Long Beach was a possible destination for the Angels, but Long Beach wanted the naming rights for the team (the Long Beach Angels). Gene Autry didn’t like the sound of the Long Beach Angels and decided Long Beach would not be the city of choice. Anaheim would be chosen in 1964 and would be the smallest city in the American League to have a major league franchise.

IIRC, McMullen didn't come to the Angels until '70 or '71.
He was part of a big trade wit the Dodgers in ’72? I recall it was the trade where the Angels got Valentine and Singer.
McMullen came to the Angels in early '70 from the Senators
for Reichart and Rodriguez. He was sent to the Dodgers in Nov. ’72 with Messersmith for Robinson, Singer, Valentine, Grabarkewitz and Strahler.

Team name
The LA Angels were almost the laughing stock of baseball – The LA Angels of Anaheim are the laughing stock owned by an egomaniac who does not know the difference between Anaheim and LA. He only has two goals – to rid all remembrance of the 2002 team , and be better than the Dodgers. The Only Angel team with greatness was the Anaheim Angels owned by Disney. We need a new owner!!

“The Los Angeles Angels”, a minor league franchise that was never a part of the current Halo organization (other than sharing a few players in the earlier decades), was most definitely NOT the laughing stock of baseball. Until the Padres A team this season, the original LAA AAA team had two of the greatest minor league seasons – and acknowleged minor league teams – in all of history. I think it was the 1934 and 1956 squads. That first team was so friggin’ awesome, that when the final championship series for the national AAA title was held, the LAA was matched up against a team of All-Stars from the rest of AAA baseball! And they beat them, too!

You’re missing an option. The first that came to mind for me, and the one that most encapsulates the feelings of those who’ve been 714 their whole lives:

Someone who is sober could word that better or more economically, but let me explain anyway, because the internet is somehow less discerning than talk radio: the butt-of-jokes option and the more harm option applies initially, and at this point I feel like we’re at an equilibrium. During the 2009 season I noticed broadcasters still taking their jabs or pretending to accidentally call them the California Angels or what have you. At this point in time, however, we’ve reached the impetus that I would like to think Arte had in mind when that Arizona native concocted this absurd name: the media is starting to simply drop the last two words of the team’s name.
For the record, I have never said all the words of this team’s legal name in their proper order. And I’ve never typed them, either. And I never will. Another thing I’ll never do is wish Arte removed as the owner of this ball club. He may not have understood that we who’ve lived in North County all our lives are pretty proud of this little spot, but he’s done a lot more good than harm, and that’s no mistake.
He wanted to turn this very excellent ball club and coaching staff into a national brand. And he’s on the way to making that happen. Which is fine to me, except for the fact that if he actually succeeds I will no longer have this First Class team just down the road that I can go see at a discounted price a third of the time.
But then again, I like seeing the seats filled. Even if that makes it harder for me to jockey for a better seat. Because when Mike Witt signed that ball to me at the age of 3 I no longer had a choice as to what ball club I belonged to, so it might as well grow in glory and standing.
Yeah, I want my club to be taken seriously. And Arte took a few steps backward in 2005 towards that goal. But in the next few years his decision may take us a few steps forward. That is what I mean by my suggestion of an incomplete poll.

Just out of curiosity
since baseball can be a superstitous and ritualistic game, let us look at the Angels history of winning the World Series and the geographical names of each Angels team that won it.
Since we all know it’s Anaheim, let us pretend that a California Angels won the WS first. Do you think there would have ever been any complaining when the team switched to Anaheim because of the historical facts of winning a WS as the CA Angels?
Now let’s hope this doesn’t happen, but say the LAAof A never wins a WS, how many years would it take before the name goes back to the magical Angels team and the only one to win a WS?

Nope.
It will take me some time to verify, but I suspect that the last game in a Major League Halos uniform played by any player who once wore the PCL Los Angeles Angels uni might be Larry Sherry.
Sherry played on the 1957 PCL LA Angels. He concluded his big league career pitching 1 1/3 innings of relief for the California Angels in a losing cause against the Cleveland Indians on July 7th, 1968.

LA Angels of Anaheim
I like the name Los Angels Angels but not so much the Anaheim part. Arte Moreno is an advertising man and understands things that many fans don’t. I think he did it not so much to attract fans from LA but to be able to sign players from the Caribbean and Latin America. Players there don’t know the name Anaheim but they do know Los Angeles and they can tell their friends and relatives that they are going to play in Los Angeles.
i have NO problem with the name
if there was never any history of this franchise with that name, then i’d have a problem. the name of the franchise was named after “the city of Angels” right? then the storied dodgers came and took over everything. so many people ignore our historical tie to the city of LA, even if it was as a minor league affiliate for the great majority. i like to take pride in being the oldest pro franchise originally from these parts, but that’s just me.
i thought the move by Arte was genius. Since Arte can’t mention “Los Angeles” or print it on the uniform, i’m content with the constant use of “The Angels” as an interpretation of “los angeles.” not only that but it pisses doyer fans off and the fact that we’ve been the better franchise for the new century.
Rev, didn’t you mention some open land in La Mirada? wouldn’t put it past Arte.

ARTE’S MESSAGE TO OC MOVERS AND SHAKERS IN 2015: I will move the team seven miles away and build a state of the art stadium. Anaheim as well as Orange County will suffer the loss of revenue as it will be on the LA side of the county line, but the fan base will simply switch offramps. So how about someone give me what I want in order to stay put.

I believe GA is still the correct answer to the California Angels trivia, but technically, if there’s an LA Angel who played against the Halos, he could be the the last player on “the Los Angeles Angels to appear in an Angels game”.
Note that the trivia question does not specify that the player in question had to be playing for the Halos at the time.

I stick with Larry Sherry. His MLB career lasted into much later years than others.
So I still say that Larry Sherry was the last PCL LAA player still playing in the bigs, and he finished his career as a Halo.
