Figgins on verge of signing with the Mariners
The deal is worth around 36 million over 4 years. Of this goes through the M's would have one of the deadliest 1-2 lead off punches in the game with Ichiro and Figgins spearheading the lineup.

That price sounds about right.
They’re going to have some pretty nice infield defense now, and a ridiculous top of the lineup.
Uh, SHIT.
RIP Nick Adenhart.

This is what happens when they have one of the biggest budgets for FA talent in the league ;)
Apparently some mix of Harden/Bay/Lackey is possible, too…
Now just imagine what would be happening if they had Carlos Silva off the books…
Eh
Seattle is a 3rd-place team. Figgins doesn’t make them appreciably better. They gain nothing defensively over what they were getting from Beltre. While Figgins gives them more speed and OBP, he’s not a threat to go deep. Beltre didn’t do much last year, but you can usually count on him to hit 20 HR. It’s going to take a lot more than Chone Figgins to actually make the Mariners substantially better.
Except that last year's turnaround happened with Beltre in limp mode/on the DL
For most of the year. On top of that, Figgins’ skill set is far better suited to Safeco.

Did the M's ownership provide a "Win now" mandate?
The Figgy move (if it happens) is smart.
If ownership is onside with spending money, I get the sense Jack Z will:
- address the ERA-FIP differential (at -0.52 that was the biggest in the AL in 2009) by signing somebody like Harden
- address the league worst wOBA of .313 by signing a low risk/high reward LH batter like Carlos Delgado or Nick Johnson to play 1B and maybe even Bay to play LF/DH

Meh
Who’s gonna play 1B or 2B for them next year? Their new SS is Jack Wilson, so that’s not going to help them score more runs. Who’s gonna catch or DH?
I think the M's will pull off a significant trade during the winter meetings
The M’s will fool some team into giving up a good player for Jose Lopez. Lopez is overvalued right now. He hit 25 HRs, but only one of the homers travelled over 400 feet. I get the sense Lopez hitting 25 HRs a year isn’t sustainable going forward.

While JL’s career OBP of .303 sucks, he was a 2.6 WAR player in 2009 and 2.1 in 2008. Despite lacking speed his UZR stats show decent range.

M's will probably sign Russell Branyan back for 1B.

I'm praying this doesn't go through....
This would be the single biggest blow to the Angels chances of appearing in the World Series in 2010.
Not quite sure it helps the M’s as much as it helps us to sign Figgy. They have Ichiro leading off. They need a 3B but can probably fill that need elsewhere.
Why in the heck have we been sitting on our asses while Figgy and agent are apparently close to leaving. Hope Arte swoops in and does something. Quick!
