Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

Mariners got Shiggy with it, now they will get Figgy with it... a club option for a FIFTH year makes this a possible $45 Million deal. That is a lot of Sasquatch pelts, Vista operating systems, Frapuccinos and ... uh... does Seattle even have a fourth stereotype? Oh, UMBRELLAS, yeah, Thassa lotta umbrellas!

$36 million for a ninth place hitter?

Seems pretty excessive for them.

Who knows, maybe they’ll put Ichiro in the third hole.

I’m going to miss Figgy.

I've got nothing.

by bc56274 on Dec 4, 2009 7:32 PM PST reply actions

"ninth place hitter"?

You still don’t buy that Figgins is a legit leadoff guy?

by Turks Teeth on Dec 4, 2009 7:48 PM PST up reply actions

Of course I buy him as a leadoff hitter.

I’m just not sure he calls the shots in a town that Ichiro already owns.

I've got nothing.

by bc56274 on Dec 4, 2009 8:02 PM PST up reply actions

Ichiro is nearing the end of his contract.

And you can guarantee that if Figgins is not leading off, he’ll be batting second.

by Turks Teeth on Dec 4, 2009 8:04 PM PST up reply actions

Figgins leading off, with Ichiro 2nd

would probably be ideal for the M’s. Ichiro has much more control of his bat, and could probably hit and run better than Figgy.

Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

by howiestheman on Dec 4, 2009 8:06 PM PST up reply actions

That's what I anticipate as well.

Figgins sees more pitches, and as you say, Ichiro can probably execute the hit and run better than most. Depending on what other moves the M’s make, I could see them hitting Ichiro third as well.

by Turks Teeth on Dec 4, 2009 8:15 PM PST up reply actions

Yes!!!

But I think the cards are falling in the right places.

by wumbug on Dec 4, 2009 7:37 PM PST up reply actions

Agree 100%, Matt.

His baserunning in the 8th inning of Game 6 of the World Series was an electrifying moment and is still one of my all-time great Angels baseball memories.

I wish Chone nothing but the best.

by Fan Since 1981 on Dec 4, 2009 7:44 PM PST up reply actions

I love Figgy as much as anyone

but his baserunning in that inning wasn’t all that great. He slid into 3rd base on the bloop hit by GA when Barry Bonds was still struggling to get it in. He basically slid into 3rd popped up real quick with almost enough time to still head home if there wasn’t 0 outs. With the play in front of him like that it was actually pretty poor baserunning IMO.

by MH252525 on Dec 4, 2009 8:48 PM PST up reply actions

+1000

I find all the collective shrugging and dismissing of Figgins’ value a little classless at this point. Figgins was a huge part of the most successful run in the history of this organization.

All the carping about him being "done", a ninth-place slap hitter, etc etc seems a bit much for a player that had the most walks and the secondmost runs in the league last season.

Top ten Angel no question.

by Turks Teeth on Dec 4, 2009 7:44 PM PST up reply actions

The saddest part of all this is...

we’ll no longer get to hear Hud exclaim… “He’s gett’n Figgy with it!”

Oh, the memories.

I just happened to be wearing my Figgins t-shirt today too. Eerie

Sorry, I don’t have a GMJ jersey if you’re wondering.

Let the Brandon Wood Era begin!

A power hitting third baseman. What a novel idea? I don’t care if he has a strike out ratio like Rob Deer, let’s give the kid a legit chance.

by cosbysweater on Dec 4, 2009 7:48 PM PST reply actions

5 years? Wow...

Figgins will always hold a special place for all of us, but I commend the FO for not panicking and offering an absurd deal (a la GMJ) that they would later regret. 5 years would have been a mistake for us, I think Seattle will regret this in 2 or 3 years.

Now it’s Wood’s time to pick up the slack. And I, for one, and looking forward to it. We have so much young (under 30) talent, it’s unbelievable. As long as Wood is given the starting spot, do you all realize that we will have an entire infield under the age of 30 in 2010? And actually, Mike Napoli would be the oldest, at the ripe age of 27 on Opening Day.

We are entering a very good time as Angels fans…

No one can deny what Figgy did for this team.

And I’m happy he got a pay day that he wanted. And I will root for his success as long as it doesn’t come at the expense of the Angels.

Figgy left the Halos on good terms and I’m sure he’ll be all smiles when he faces the Angels next year. I wish him no ill will and hope he makes the Seattle Rangers the 2nd best team in the AL West. A distant 2nd.

I think it'll be Abreu

leading off, with Erick second. Hopefully Bobby’s patience will influence Aybar the way it did Figgy. If that happens Aybar might lead off down the road.

I would have been happy to keep Figgy, but I can’t say i’m bummed about losing him—it just opens the door for Wood, which will be cool to finally see.

I like Aybar 2nd

mostly because he can lay down a bunt. Also he makes pretty regular contact. He’s not as patient as an ideal #2 hitter, but maybe he can learn from Abreu.

Howie I like at 6 or 7 where he can be aggressive and not have to worry about patience during steals or hit & run plays as often. If he gets his consistency together, I think he could be a #3 hitter.

I bleed Angel red

by squarefootnatlpark on Dec 5, 2009 6:55 AM PST up reply actions

Not real sure

but, I think I would have to say Aybar #1, Abreu #2… Aybar had some pretty big hits during the postseason and he has the more potiential then the other current starters to steal alot of bags. If it doesn’t work then you switch Abreu to leadoff and move Aybar back down to the ninth hole.

by Anaslime on Dec 5, 2009 7:59 AM PST up reply actions

I don't like Abreu leading off either.

Not because I don’t think he would be a good leadoff hitter but because I just think it’s retarded putting a guy who has amassed 100 RBIs each of the last 7 seasons into a leadoff role.

by Chzburger Jones on Dec 5, 2009 1:35 PM PST up reply actions

Does that mean

all that’s left from the 2002 Championship team is Shields and Lackey?…oh, and Scioscia of course. Hell, Lackey could be gone real soon here too. And yet the Angels keep winning. A true testament how great the management, scouting, farm system are, and of course the Almighty Soth. I will miss Figgy, but it’s time to break out the Wood!

Do or do not. There is no try.

by Clip Show on Dec 4, 2009 9:48 PM PST reply actions

Angels dodged a bullet

Plain and simple. For all of those that live in 2002, Figgins has had ONE solid year since. And has NEVER been a factor in the playoffs. I am very proud of management for making tough decisions, that 5-10 years ago would have lead to homer signings. For those of you who are about to hate, I was never more upset then when we let Glaus go. D-mac was an epic failure. I honestly feel secure this time around, so maybe that means something. At the end of the day, excellent management, and I haven’t been this proud of this team for a while. Go angels.

by bruinbrah on Dec 4, 2009 10:34 PM PST reply actions

I'm about to hate

Figgins had one bad year (2006) and one average year (2008) since ‘04. In ’02 he was a designated pinch runner, but he improved steadily in every season since, so why don’t you check your facts a bit. I agree management made the right, tough call, but Chone is a very good player and will help Seattle a whole lot. We just have depth at his positions, making him expendable.

Respect the Chone.

by dmhead on Dec 5, 2009 9:26 AM PST up reply actions

You addressed nothing in my post.

He was an angel and a good teamer. Not upset to see him go.

by bruinbrah on Dec 5, 2009 9:53 AM PST up reply actions

I didn't?

You said he had one solid year since 2002. He barely played in 2002. He was solid in 2004, 2005, and was great in 2007 and 2009. I don’t care how you feel about seeing him ago, but if you’re going to make a statement back it up.

by dmhead on Dec 5, 2009 10:45 AM PST up reply actions

Okay.

So you are “backing it up” by making blanket statements about being great, and good for certain, years. Sounds a lot like an opinion to me. I really could care less what or who you think is good, or great. Figgy’s great .185 batting average during the playoffs in 35 post season appearances doesn’t seem so good, or great does it.

by bruinbrah on Dec 5, 2009 4:43 PM PST up reply actions

Oh, for chrissakes.

There is no opinion about it. Look up his numbers yourself. You said he hasn’t had ONE SOLID YEAR since ‘02, which was blatantly wrong, and now you backtrack by bringing up his playoff numbers, which really mean nothing considering the small number of games you’re judging him by, not to mention all the other superstars that have struggled come postseason play.

Once again, I actually agree with you. The team made the right call in not overpaying for him. But don’t downplay the guy’s contributions to this team. He was more than just a “gamer”.

by dmhead on Dec 6, 2009 12:09 AM PST up reply actions

Small number of games?

35, really? He was worthless come postseason time. He had plenty of opportunities and promptly shit the bed. Again, because you say I am “blatanly wrong” doesn’t mean a damn thing. I also love how you compare him with other superstars? WTF is that. If the kid could get on base that would have been enough. Superstar? Really? Come on.

by bruinbrah on Dec 6, 2009 9:58 PM PST up reply actions

That was so cute

The part where you said I misspelled something. Then i realized oh, he is just super funny, and i just realized I was wrong because he said i couldn’t spell. That was so clever. Do you have a stat for that? How many cute little comments you make about people not being accurate. That would be awesome.

by bruinbrah on Dec 6, 2009 9:54 PM PST up reply actions

bummer!

While I was expecting this to happen it still bums me out.
Figgins was great. Now it is time for all you Wood lovers to see what we are really gonna get. Let’s hope we get another Kendry, but I have a feeling he isn’t gonna be able to fill Figgy’s shoes for a while…. I hope he proves me wrong.

by jhens76 on Dec 4, 2009 10:51 PM PST reply actions

Bon voyage Figgy.

Easily one of the most likeable and classiest players around. I wish Figgy nothing but the best in Seattle (as long as it isn’t to the Halos detriment) and his continued success. But, like many here, i’m convinced this would be a contract we’d regret around year 3 or 4. Here’s to hoping that we make the moves necessary to continue our AL west dominance. Now lets re-sign Lackey, shore up our ’pen, try to land another SP to bolster the rotation, and get another ring!

YOU DON'T KNOW THE POWER OF THE DARKSIDE.....

by halofolife on Dec 4, 2009 11:14 PM PST reply actions

Figgy is a prototypical left fielder/second baseman.

Center fielder if he was a better out fielder. He became a great defensive third baseman. He filled many holes for our Angels. Chone is loved here and rightly so. But, fans, we, should think like owners; not managers; not players. What makes our team better.

Wood should give us a better slugging %. He will do it for much less money. He may allow us to buy a free agent or re-sign an aging star.

I hate to see a beloved star go, but it has to be. Good-bye old friend.

     Don’t hurt us. Godspeed.

Who goofed? I've got to know.

by hittheg on Dec 5, 2009 12:03 AM PST reply actions

He will be missed - and Seattle did get better by this move

From ESPN – take it for what it’s worth:

“The Mariners made themselves better and the Angels worse by working out a deal with Figgins. “In many respects, the Mariners are taking on the look of the Angels’ team in recent years, with a bunch of guys who can hit singles and doubles and run the bases. It’s a team that needs power for the middle of its order, and it’ll be interesting to see how Seattle gets it, whether through the serious pursuit of a free agent like Jason Bay, or a trade.”

by mustard_man on Dec 5, 2009 5:55 AM PST reply actions

ESPN, much like the baseball community

is sleeping on Wood. Which will be awesome for the first part of the season. Nobody will know what Wood is capable of and he can hit the cover off the ball.

Wood will easily hit 20 home runs. Lets hope is defense is as good as advertised and that his offense his influenced by Abreu and Morales.

Good call

Even some of the “local media” is whiffing on this story. I was driving around listening to Mason and Ireland yesterday (yeah, that was my first mistake) and they were speculating on how now the Angels have to go after Beltre, with the only hurdle being he’s a Boras guy. Um, do they even know the Angels HAVE a minor league system? Its so asinine.

It leads to a little more excitement for the upcoming season!!

We will have an unproven rookie trying to make a lot of noise in the lineup. He has not proven anything yet but it will be exciting for all Angels fan if this guy turns out to be what has been talked about for years now.
