Goodbye John Lackey
Teams calling Lackey's agent are being told he wants 17+ a year for a least six years.
Not only is that completely not in the realm of what Arte wants to do, Lackey is not even close to being worth that much money, "face of the franchise" or not. (He isn't)
This is a very strong sign that Mr Thunder will not be pitching in Anaheim next year.
See ya.

Yeah, well I want a million a year to edit magazines
Doesn’t mean anyone’s gonna pay me. Is there a market for 6/100, or even 6/80, for a guy whose stats are exactly the same as Kevin Millwood’s? I don’t see it. Until one emerges, I would hold off on those good-bye kisses.

I doubt he gets six years anywhere. Maybe NY, but that’s it. And I’m not sure he gets $100 million total from anyone.
PREDICIOTN
He will get $18 Mil. for 5 años = $90 Million (someone check my math)
I’m calling it: Mariners.
The only way he gets a sixth year is is there is an IP bonus for years 4 and 5 in that contract.
God I hope Beltre totally screws over the M's by accepting arb.
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....

Good luck Big John.
Thanks for the memories.
1 line siggy line because I was asked nicely. Go Angels! helpfindscottajob@gmail.com
And this is coming from...?
He’s not going to get that much for that long from anybody. The Yankees aren’t that needy.

We've got money
Alot more than Seattle. I don’t see the M’s taking both Figgins and Lackey, I really don’t. I sure as hell don’t see Arte and Tony letting that happen either.
If Lackey isn’t back with us next year, then he’s not going to be in the AL West.
No we don't
The Mariners have $50 million coming off the books this winter. They can sign just about anybody they want. I bet they go after Bay next though.

Arte may open the wallet a bit wider for Lackey, as he would have for Teix.
The problem is the number of years Lackey wants.

Regardless
We’re a big market team with a really rich owner. My point is that they can expand payroll.
Hoss, you need to keep up with your owner's meanderings:
- LINK -
On the Angels’ player payroll: “We’re going to invest what we invested last year. We’re not looking to reduce payroll.”
On John Lackey and Chone Figgins: “We’re at $101 million now. We were at $113 million last year. If you look at what they’re asking, you can’t bring both of them back.”
On all free agents: “A lot of people are looking for five- and six-year contracts. I’m not interested in making what I would consider a long-term contract unless we feel it’s for a franchise player. There are very few franchise players out there.”
Translation: Don’t look to see Arte parting with his money unless you see some ridiculous talent in the echelon of Halladay.
by shiftyeyedgoat on Dec 6, 2009 10:24 PM PST up reply actions
This is correct
Only loosening the budget for high impact, franchise type players.
Bay and Halladay please stand up.
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
I doubt that they go after Bay
Since it seems that the Ms place a high value on outfield defense.
RIP Nick Adenhart
The Mariners place a high value on
winning. If Bay helps them be more competitive, then they’ll look into him. Just because a team is really good in one area, doesn’t mean they’re not looking to acquire good players with particular deficiencies.
The Mariner connection
Supposedly, the Mariners are going after Bay and Harden both due to those men having grown up in BC. While that makes them Canadians and not Washingtonians, it also means they’d be closer to the site of their childhood than if they played in Boston or Chicago.
Does either man give a rip about playing close to his ancestral stomping grounds? My guess is that either will go where the greenbacks are greenest, without regard to boyhood homes.

Lackey vs. Burnett (as per WAR)
Quick WAR comparison of Big John vs. AJ since 2004
Lackey
2004: 3.6
2005: 5.9
2006: 6.0
2007: 5.6
2008: 2.0
2009: 3.9
TOTAL: 27.0
Burnett
2004: 2.9
2005: 5.1
2006: 3.2
2007: 2.6
2008: 5.5
2009: 3.1
TOTAL: 22.4
Based on track record, Lackey has been better than Burnett. I understand the logic as to why John would want to exceed AJ’s 5-year deal for $82.5 million. NOTE: Though John may have been a 5-6 WAR pitcher in the past, it doesn’t mean he will be one going forward. The big question: what kind of market is out there?
the main reason burnett got the money he did is because the skanks
overpaid like only they could.
That will be so lame if we lose Figgy and Lackey, and likely Vlad. Lame lame lame.
I am a fan. so screw u to all the people who don’t value having a favorite player.
congratulations at being pessimistic and antagonistic at the same time.

Sry, it just disappoints me that my favorite players Figgy and Vlad, are all but gone.
I made a preemptive strike against those that value the #’s to such a high degree, that it often seems as if they are business major.
Plus I value the continuity from our 2002 team.
by Wally's World on Dec 7, 2009 2:28 PM PST up reply actions
Vlad wasn't on the 02 team and Figgins wasn't allowed to bat back then (pinch run only).
So, do you only value Lackey and Shields? Hate the rest of the team? Or did you just wake up from a 7 year coma?
I wouldn't worry about the M's getting Lackey
The only pitcher we’re likely to throw a wad of cash at is Felix Hernandez via an extension. Besides, our team only has like $15 to $18 Million left to spend give or take.
Sounds like Lackey wants to be with the Red Sox or Yankees.
Nah, Lackey will be a Met come Christmas.

Any word from M's ownership about the flexibility of the payroll?
I’m curious who sets the payroll for the M’s; is it up to Howard Lincoln/Chuck Armstrong, or do they have to get the okay from the main ownership group in Japan? Business Week (source) is forecasting a year-over-year decline in Nintendo’s earnings.
Last fiscal year’s figures:
Sales 1.84 trillion yen
Operating profits 555 billion yen
Net profits 279 billion yen
Fiscal-year forecast:
Sales 1.5 trillion yen
Operating profits 370 billion yen
Net profits 230 billion yen
I don’t follow the M’s, but I suspect some die-hard Mariner fans might know the extent of Nintendo Japan’s involvement in the financial decisions for the ballclub.

I still think we make a good push
That asking price will come down a bit and he’s our obvious priority right now. This piece of news doesn’t surprise, upset, or deter me. I think it’s 50-50 that we get him back. Obviously, he’s not worth that price, but I wouldn’t mind over-paying a little to get him back.
I agree with this assessment.
RIP Nick Adenhart.
"When the Babe tries to call his shot, I hope Nick puts one in his ear."

I wish I felt that...
I feel it’s more like a 20-80 that we get him back. There is no doubt this Angel team is evolving this year. From the sound of it there will be no more Figgins, Vlad, and probably no Lackey either.
I’m ok with it…or at least that is what I’m telling myself. I’d really like to have Big Thunder around next year because it will make the losses of Figgins and Vlad more bearable.
This kinda feels like a break up with a girlfriend—you may still like her and feel bad to dump her, but do you really want to be with her in five years?
Peanuts...Get your Overpriced Peanuts!
Overpaying on average annual value...
Is different than overpaying in years. Six years is lunacy for a 31 y/o starter with Lackey’s profile.

I agree
No way he should get six years. Five is pushing it, but if it means a great Lackey for the next three years and he starts declining a bit after that, I still think it would be worth it for the right price. Obviously, there’s a risk that he could be completely ineffective after a couple of years, but the way he’s come back from the injuries he has had, I’ll take that risk.
Let him goto the M's
let him be second fiddle to King Felix. I would think that being as competitive as he is he would want the ACE spot which he has with the angels. But I guess it really is all about the money. If he obviously wants more than the Angels can offer he doesn’t even want to be here.
First we had a Salmon and now we have a Trout, let's see the same results.

I know it’s all about the money but I guess sometimes when it’s one of your own guys you just hope he wants to play here. Oh well I guss we’ll just have to win without him.

I wouldn’t start worrying until a team offers him that, which I REALLY doubt will happen.
Lackey's Guiding Light
You heard it here first….just like Texeira last off-season…a woman may be guiding John’s decision…if that’s the case like it was last year when Mrs. T wanted NY like Zsa Zsa Gabor in Green Buck Acres, John will be going to the worst possible place of all…Baaahstin. I hope what I heard is wrong, because I hate those bastards from beantown.

This must be how it feels to be a fan of the A’s.

If the Mariners do get him, I guess I underestimated the Seattle market
Evidently their revenues are equal or greater than the Angels. Is it because of Ichiro and Japan?
RIP Nick Adenhart
King Felix
Here’s why I doubt the Mariners would sign Lackey. Suppose, for purposes of discussion, that Lackey got 6 years at $17 million per, as he wants. The M’s would then have to pony up in excess of $20 million/year to keep Hernandez in a couple of years. They’re not the Yankees; I don’t see them committing close to $40 million annually on TWO players.
Angels vs. Mariners (Quick Financial Profiles)
Angels
Revenue: $212 million
Player Expense: $132 million
Team Value: $509 million
Mariners
Revenue: $189 million
Player Expense: $127 million
Team Value: $426 million
The two teams match up fairly well from a financial perspective.

Look, I'm all for trying to keep the homegrown talent in-house...
…and I remember feeling really hacked off when Edmonds, Glaus, Erstad, Eckstein, Kennedy, Colon (snicker), Washburn, Percival, et al, signed somewhere else. But we won with them. And we’ve won without them. There is no way Arte and the Ninja are going to allow this franchise to relapse into late 80s-early 90s obscurity. They will do what needs to be done (coughtradeGMJcough), and once again, We Will Win With What We’ve Got.
I ain’t worried. If they bring back John, great. If they don’t, then someone will step up and do what is asked of them. It’ll sting to see him in another uni, but we’ll get over it (unless it’s a Red Sox uni…then he’s dead to me).
No one, and I mean, no one comes into our house and pushes us around.
Yankees are setting BAD EXAMPLES
Who the heck would pay A.J. Burnett 5yr $16.5M .. that guy is worth at most $12M.. and i would say $14-15M for big John is enough..
It looks like Bayday may just happen
Lookie what Tony said according to Tim Brown (Yahoo),
Reagins on Jason Bay: “He’s a guy we find appealing and we’ll see where it takes us.”
If Reagins says something like that then it looks like a big possibility.
