some thoughts on bay, granderson, vlad, and others
Just a couple things I've been thinking about with regards to various rumors and suggestions that are out there...
- I still don't understand why the Angels would be interested in trading for Curtins Granderson. He's been primarily a leadoff hitter in recent years, yet he has a very high strikeout rate and at best a modest OBP
- I think signing Jason Bay is the best way to improve the club if we aren't able to land one of the big starting pitchers out there (Halladay, Lackey, Jackson). But I don't agree with the notion that it means the end of Vladimir Guerrero's Angels career. Maybe I love Vlad too much, but I'd see him as our DH, Bay in left, Torii in center, and Bobby in right, than have Granderson or Juan Rivera somewhere in the mix.
- Why not turn Juan Rivera into a quality reliever or a middle of the rotation starter? If we end up losing out on the big pitchers out there, I could see Juan Rivera (and maybe someone else) being swapped for a Derek Lowe - type player. I think this would be more beneficial to the Angels than Curtis Granderson would be.
- I'd like to see the Angels go after some high risk/high reward free agent pitchers like Rich Harden or Erik Bedard. Sure, they're both more than likely to miss some time to injury. But hasn't John Lackey missed time the last two years as well? Harden and Lackey have totalled the same number of starts the last two season but Harden has better career numbers.
- An obvious one: we cannot let the Mariners beat us out for either John Lackey or Jason Bay. If they sign one, we need to sign the other to even it out. Otherwise, the Mariners might just be the new favourites in the AL West.
That's just how I feel...
k now you can rip into me now.

Vlad's the man....
but we can’t pay him anymore than 5 million a year to be a backup DH. His fielding is worthless and his offense is at best subpar. he’s a player that relied on pure physical talent to make it to the big leagues and lacks the Baseball IQ to be a great 30 and over player. He still will bat around .300 due to a consistent high Batting average with balls in play but he struggles to work the count and has never been a situational hitter. Also we can’t afford pitchers pitching around T-hunter to get to vlad. Hunter needs the protection in the lineup and he will need it even more since his best offensive output for the rest of his career was likely last season.
the angels best bet...
is to sign bay and pay him torii money… however bay may take a pay cut to play in seattle. Supposedly he is ecstatic at the thought of playing in seattle since he is from B.C. in canada and went to Gonzaga in spokane washington.

Rumors also have it...
angels are deciding on whether to sign lackey or trade of halladay. The only problem with halladay is that it will probably cost the angels a starter, weaver, saunders,or santana. The only problem with this deal is we MUST resign him as soon as he arrives or we are only getting one season out of him which would be a waste
I hope Halladay doesn't resign
Please…

Not a problem
The Angels won’t make a deal unless there is an agreement to an extension ahead of time.
Think of the Mets and Johan Santana—I guarantee you Halladay is. There is zero chance the Angels would get hung out to dry on this.

What in the world?

In the mix where? On the bench? Providing water for the other players?
Vlad is not coming back, period. Rivera is just better offensively and defensively right now, no reason to re-sign an inferior player.
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....

And Rivera is less expensive than most people around here think Vlad will get, although I don’t agree.
I think Vlad will be lucky to get a contract as good as GA’s, last year – $2.5mm. I also expect that Vlad will have a crappy year like GA did, as well.
Since when has Edwin Jackson been a top SP?
I seriously don’t understand all the hype. He had a decent season last year in the mediocre AL Central, but has been pretty mediocre pitcher the rest of his career. Where is all the love coming from?
(Not just in this post)
He was much better than decent for about 2/3rds of the season in 09.
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
How do you rank players?
2/3 of one season or the rest of his career?
Look at his career numbers. They aren’t that good. Granted he has gotten better as time goes on. But to consider him a top pitcher is ludicrous.
Not counting 2003-2005 since those were short call ups (and by leaving them out I’m doing him a favor) these are some of his stats:
WHIP: 1.84, 1.76, 1.51, 1.26 ERA: 5.45, 5.76, 4.42, 3.62 For career averages 6 k’s per 9 inning.
Is he a bad pitcher? No!
Should he be included in discussions as top pitchers in the league? No! That’s all I’m sayin.
Ooof, this makes sense.

Edwin Jackson is too young to be left out of discussion...
he definitely isn’t a #1 but has the potential. He was a touted dodger and ray prospect for years but never fully bloomed. last year there was more consistency, who knows what this season could hold.
Edwin Jackson is an enigma
His fastball velocity is on par with #1 or #2 type starters. Here are the top 7 AL starters in 2009 ranked by average fastball velocity (for starting pitchers who threw at least 150 innings)
1. Verlander (95.6)
2. Jackson (94.5)
3. Burnett (94.2)
4. Beckett (94.1)
5. Sabathia (94.1)
6. Hernandez (94.0)
7. Greinke (93.7)
I chose top 7 because I wanted to include Felix and Greinke. Impressive company for Jackson. His fastball is right up there with top-notch starters.
But his stats are not commensurate with his blazing fastball. His 2009 FIP of 4.28 was only good for 20th place among starters who threw at least 150 innings. And his K/9 rate of 6.77 was just 19th in the AL.
Do we really want TWO enigmas--Santana and Jackson--in the same rotation?
‘08 aside, I still feel as though we’re just rolling the dice on Ervin at the beginning of every year. Why have to be rolling the dice and hoping for the best on two players? You could get two 6’s—but you could also get two 1’s.

Santana's performance this year was drastically affected by the MCL tear in his elbow
There was some encouraging news during the 2009 season by the fact that Ervin’s velocity increased during the course of the season. If he’s healthy, Ervin will be fine.
Good article highlighting Ervin regaining his velocity here
