Why the Angels can't let the Mariners sign Bay
Thanks to the pending Mariner signing of Figgins, the Angels are in line to receive the #18 overall pick in the draft next year (thank you, Seattle!). Should Seattle also sign Bay, this really screws us over, as Bay is ranked a higher Type A free agent according to Elias Rankings, which means that now the d***** Red Sox would get Seattle's #18 pick, and we'd only get Seattle's 2nd round pick. By signing Bay, Seattle in effect would help Boston out while simultaneously screwing the Angels.
Additionally, we don't really want the M's to sign Lackey, either. If they sign Lackey and Figgins, we do still get their #18 pick, but then again we get their 2nd round pick, as opposed to another team's first round pick.
We get sandwich picks between the 1st and 2nd rounds for both players either way, but losing potential 1st round draft picks suck.
And this is just the way Seattle signing Bay or Lackey would affect our draft next year. If they were to sign either, you'd have to actually start considering the Mariners contenders for the AL West...
So, that said, here's to hoping the Mariners get neither. They can trade KC for Jose Guillen if they want, though...

I feel the old Seattle hatred coming back...
…from back in the Unit, A-Rod, Jr, Buhner days. It feels strangely comforting.
No one, and I mean, no one comes into our house and pushes us around.

It is the Mariners' purpose for living to try to screw over the Angels, but it never works.
My personal favorite, Matt Palmer vs. Felix Hernandez, for example. I would LMAO if the Mariners sign Lackey because their fans think he is absolutely the ugliest player in baseball and they would have to root for him.
The Mariners had success last year by copying Soth’s “small ball” strategy and they look to improve on that by hiring the available Angel free agents like Figgins who perfected Soth’s first to third run manufacturing method. The Mariners are becoming the Angels by being the Angels. This will back-fire on them as Soth and Ninja switch strategies to pitching and power hitting with their focus on winning a ring in 2010. The Angels need to be more like the Yankees and go after top ace pitching and proven power hitters. I think this is why the rumors around Halladay and Bay with the Angels are so strong.

Signing Lackey and Figgins makes them contenders?
Really?
I think the Mariners still have some way to go. There are too many gaping questions. For instance, can they really count on Russell Branyan to have another solid year? Can Franklin Gutierrez repeat what was his best year so far? Will Washburn show the same effectiveness that he did in 2009 but failed to show in almost all previous years with the Mariners. Are they really going to let Griffey return? Right now you got three guys in their lineup hitting under .220, three with an OBP under .300 and only two players with an OPS in the .800’s with all the others below.
Then you can look at things like how the Mariners had four guys in their starting lineup with a SLG in the 300’s while the Angels had one (Figgins—how ironic) with all the rest over. Then consider that no one in the Angels starting lineup had an OPS under .776 and BA under .272 (sans Mathis) ….I say they got a ways to go via offense.
Lackey, Hernandez, Washburn, Rowland-Smith….there’s a lot of questions past Hernandez….and besides Aaradsma, their bullpen isnt the earth-shattering.
I think if they got Lackey and/or Bay along with Figgy…they would certaintly help their cause but lets not get carried away.

I'm not handing them the division
But I think it’d be smart not to count them out if they made a few shrewd moves. Also, don’t underestimate just how good their defense is. That’s a large part of what made Texas competitive this year, too.
Napoli IS the power bat in 2009. Watch.
Only the dumb Mariner fans want Bay.
The rest realise that his RHB is a poor match for Safeco, and his defence is awful. He’s only be a decent fit at a below market rate to play DH. But considering he rejected 4/$60 Million, that’s not going to happen. We’d much rather see Nick Johnson and Branyan as our DH/1B next season.
I’d imagine your draft pick is safe, Lackey is going to command too much money for an aging SP with recent injury issues. I’d much rather take a punt on one of Harden, Bedard or Sheets.
