on second thought
they can have them if we get Granderson

Granderson would like it out here in Southern California...
I hear he has a vacation home on the sun.
what he said
they’re “looking” at everyone that was on our team in an effort to frustrate/intimidate us.
nothing to see here, kids
Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

Not sure what is more funny...
Seattle poaching our scraps…
or some HH posters acting like these guys are our franchise.
What do you need a fancy suit for, Charlie, you ain't got no job to wear it to.
I didn't care much about Figgins, but I would care very much if they got Lackey
And the Oliver thing pisses me off because it’s basically just a “fuck you” to the team.
RIP Nick Adenhart.

Word.
Still… a certain part of me wants the M’s to get as many “ex” angels as possible, and we still bend them over the bathroom sink in 2010.
Angels > any 1 or 2 or 3 players
It would be worth it to watch Lookout Landing implode.

Nah it has nothing to do with his fairly good year last year.

I blog about the Angels at The Diamond Aces
Oh yeah, that too.
He’s been excellent for us, and I would shudder to think of him replicating that for a division rival while our bullpen possibly otherwise repeats its early 2009 performance.

he accepted arbitration and now the braves may wish to trade him
Since he accepted arbitration he cannot be traded until July 1st.
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
yeah he can
he just has to approve it. and it’s June 15th.

And, hey, anybody around here have the number for Gary DiSarcina?

this says more about our management than it does theirs
they value players we fostered ourselves or acquired for cheap as ways to expensively improve their weak shit.
our garbage makes them better. Nothing to see here. Oliver is at the age where he’s happy to be where he is. If the moneys close, he stays.
RIP Nick Adenhart
Think of it as a compliment...
Seattle has no idea how to put a winning team on the field. They never have. So now they’re just trying to copy the Angels success the only way they can – take away their free agents. Figgins was just looking for a big payday. And he found it. But there’s no way Lackey will ever sign them. He want more than just money. He also wants to win. Oliver? I’m not so sure. Personally, I think the angels should have offered him arbitration. But, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
OK, I'm finally over losing Tex. Thanks Kendry.
They've gotten closer to October than not in the last few years, 2008 aside.
I guess. But you’re right, Lackey probably wouldn’t take that gamble if he’s as intent on a ring as he says he is. But if they convince him they’re grabbing more FA’s and have more stellar A-Rod type talent coming up and making a difference in the next two years or so, he just might bite.
RIP Nick Adenhart.

Ok seriously, time for someone to shit in their cheerios
Which Felix Hernandez may have done for us with his announcement that he wants $100 million for an extension.
Reagins should go ahead and sign Lackey, Bay and trade for Halladay just to make sure, though.

Yes.

"Don't worry about a thing,
'Cause every little thing gonna be all right!"
Wow. I can't believe how M's fans are acting.
I’m definitely gonna miss Figgy, as i’m sure our team will miss his D and ability to get on base, but you’d think they just inked Ty Cobb from some of their comments. Same goes for Cousin Oliver, again, great RP and probably our steadiest guy outta the ‘pen, but he’s not Dennis Eckersley. Seriously, put down the lattes, and don’t plan on that WS parade just yet M’s. We still got 162 games to play.
YOU DON'T KNOW THE POWER OF THE DARKSIDE.....
I think if you avoid the 14 year old idiots most M's fans are happy with the singing rather than planning a parade.
As a 3 WAR player going forward with a nice OBP and good versatility, he is a good fit for $9 Million/year. But it’s certainly not a steal or anything.
by EnglishMariner on Dec 8, 2009 2:40 AM PST up reply actions
He might have accepted it
and would likely have gotten a hefty raise relative to what he was paid.
His age is enough of a risk that the Angels did not feel like gambling.
Hefty?
They were able to work out a deal last year. I have to think that the Angels don’t want him back, which seems foolish. I just have a hard time believing that a one-year contract for Darren Oliver would really break the bank. Those draft picks are important. And most importantly, I think Oliver would again be a key member of the bullpen. Oh well.
Stupidity or more likely it's a cost-cutting/escalation prevention move.
To me it says something about the team’s financial resources that we gave up a potential extra draft pick than risk Oliver accepting arbitration and getting a raise. I don’t think Arte is willing to expand payroll as much as we all like to pretend he will when we discuss potential signings and trades.
This is a Frank McCourt-type bottom line move, not a Yankee or Red Sox-type small risk to take to make ourselves better move.
I hope you're wrong snowhor...
But i’m afraid you may be right. I really hope were wrong, and we re-sign Lackey and make some moves to put us over the top.
YOU DON'T KNOW THE POWER OF THE DARKSIDE.....
maybe the return of shields
coupled with the emergence of jepsen makes oliver expendable. We can get a lefty for cheap and no longer need oliver as a crucial setup man

If I were the Mariners' Zduriencik and had $50M to spend...
First off, I am NOT an M’s troll…
I sign Figgins, I sign Lackey, I re-sign Branyan, and then I trade the farm for Adrian Gonzales. Sign Oliver and take a flyer on either Sheets or Harden. Find a Catcher to sign and then pray my team can pitch well enough…only going to need average pitching cuz that defense and that park…as an Angel fan, I would be worried! Safeco was built for LH batters…if you ADD Oliver per this post???
Figgy 3b
Lopez 2b (frankly, I would try to include him in the AG trade somehow…)
Ichibutt RF
Gonzales 1b
Branyan LF
Griffey DH
Gutierrez CF
Wilson SS
Rob Johnson or ??? C
Felix
sLackey
Sheets/Harden
Snell
Rowland-Smith or Morrow
Closer = Aardsma with Lowe setting up
Ps…and then sign Kevin Towers as an assistant in the front office??? Crap…
People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring. ~Rogers Hornsby
The most games Branyan has ever started in the OF is 60 and that was back in 2002.
He is not physically able to play the OF (especially with the back issues) and he is currently best suited for a DH/1B role.
Branyan stats
If the M’s can’t re-sign Branyan to play 1B they probably sign free agent Nick Johnson.

Agreed...
and he would get platooned with Langerhans or Saunders or maybe even Griffey…
I was just throwing this out as fodder…the AG trade was the big part of this post. He would fit well in Safeco

If the the Red Sox can't get Gonzales
Then I put no faith in Seattle to do it.
RIP Nick Adenhart 4/9/09
I blog about the Angels at The Diamond Aces
And then?
What would their payroll be? Gonzales will soon be expensive, and Felix’s pricetag will soon be north of $20 million annually.
On the topic of pitching.........
Angels pitching staff AL rankings based on FIP over the past few years.
2004: 3rd
2005: 1st
2006: 2nd
2007: 2nd
2008: 5th
2009: 10th
The Angels pitching was terrific during the 2004-2007 period. Really top-notch stuff. But given the decline in 2008 and 2009, Tony and The Soth have to be concerned.
bullpen decline…
People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring. ~Rogers Hornsby
Not just the bullpen. Angel starting pitching FIP also ranked 10th in 2009.

I'll blame injuries on that one...
the last couple months of the season it was outstanding. We had the best rotation in baseball in the playoffs. Not that it did us any good when you’re sending your #4 and #5 starters to the pen.
And when you can't send CC Sabathia up to the mound 3 times in a 6 game series.
RIP Nick Adenhart.

I'm still reelin' over the loss of Figgy....
…and if this keeps up, I see some team name changes on jerseys in the spring, like: the Los Angeles Mariners of Seattle, or the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in Seattle, or the Seattle Angels of Los Angeles Formerly of Anaheim, or the Mariner Ballplayers Formerly Known as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim……
They'll still finish third

I dislike Seattle.
Not the city per se, but the myopic M’s fans, who have hated everything Halos for lo these many years, but I find it hard to hate Seattle, despite the Figgy signing, and their desire to copy the Angels via FA signings. My absolute hatred is given rather to the A’s and the skanks and bosux. 1995 is a terrible memory, to this day I despise certain M’s players (i’m looking at you Randy Johnson and Buhner, E. Martinez, and Griffey Jr.). The fact of the matter is, Seattle has no other option other than copying the Halos, in an effort to become successful. Thanks for the flattery you latte sipping, flannel wearing, losers. P.S. You got Figgy, but we fly flags!
