Red Sox "no" on Buchholz or Kelly. Angels lead on Halladay?
Jon Heyman is reporting that the Red Sox are unwilling to deal either Clay Buchholz or Casey Kelly for Roy Halladay. Are we now the clear front runners? Is there anyone out there that lines up as well as we would?

Uhmm
Yankees, maybe?
I think the Jays really wanted Austin Jackson, but something could still happen.
And I think the Rays might be, but they’re unlikely to be able to extend his contract.
So, ya as far as I know, we’re the front runners.
Definitely strengthens the Angels' hand
Best Available Pitcher:
Angels: Joe Saunders
Yankees: Phil Hughes
Chowds: Daniel Bard
Saunders / Napoli / Reckling for Halladay.
I like the trade only if Halladay is extended
It’s a fair trade for both teams.
Toronto gets a relatively young power hitting catcher with patience, albeit with horrible defense, that’s under club control as well as an okay and cheap 3/4 rotation type in Saunders, and a young pitching prospect. The Angels get a solid ace in Halladay and aren’t forced to meet Lackey’s contract demands (he better hope that the Yankees are seriously involved for his services) which IMO are a bit silly if true.

Extension included; but of course.

I think it is time to give Wilson a shot at the major leauge level
Napoli is too inconsistent with the bat at times, although good when he’s hot but he was the worst defensive catcher in baseball this year.
And Wilson ISNT inconsistant?
You have no idea if Wilson will be any good in the majors. So far his minor league career has panned out to be a .280s singles hitter. Whats that equate in the bigs? 250 singles hitter? Maybe? Not exactly the ideal replacement for Naps. ESPECIALLY when the other guy behind the plate (Jeff Mathis) has to yet to even prove he can hit above .211 in the majors.
Dont forget that Napoli never really played AAA. So hes a work in progress defensively.

But what about *without* an extension?
I don’t think the Angels can guarantee any extension, even if Toronto lets us negotiate. Why would Halliday not test the market next season?
I want Weaver to be dealt.

I'd say the Rays maybe, not the Yankees
The Yankees, can’t lose anymore of their bullpen after what they stupidly coughed up for Curtis Granderson. They also don’t have any starters to part with.
The Rays could offer Carl Crawford and/or S Rod just as examples.

"You gotta have nuts." - Torii Hunter
I wonder if their Granderson deal
means they are planning on going for Lackey instead.
Definitely
If reports go from us and the Sox, to the Sox hitting a roadblock, then we are. Also, if we can sign Bay/Holliday, don’t be surprised if we offer Saundo and Johnny Rivers plus a prospect.
Of course I wouldn’t mind them taking sarge, but that’s not happening….

Pretty sure they're gonna want a catcher in any deal...
which makes that prospect in your proposal Conger, and I think that would be too much. Maybe they would take the kid we just drafted from college.
Who are they asking for?
Anyone heard any rumors on who they want from us? If we give up Wood, we’re really thin at 3rd – Izzy starting and Matt Brown backing up? If we give up Naps, we’ve got Jeff “The Black Hole” Mathis in the line-up every day. If Naps goes, it would be almost imperative that we sign Bay.
No matter what happens from here on, it has been a great season.
It seems like they have backed off Wood.
They would probably want a pitcher, catcher and a couple prospects
Okay
Pitcher: Dustin Moseley
Catcher: Jeff Mathis
Prospects: Hainley Statia and Matt Brown
That’s fair, right?

Yeah, you're right
we shouldn’t sacrifice our future (in Brown/Statia) at the left side of the infield just for some old pitcher. Maybe if they toss in some salary relief and some toss-in like Adam Lind or Aaron Hill or someone.

Mathis
in the lineup every day rather than every other day is a fine price to get Doc atop our rotation.
I've soured on Napoli...
his defensive statistics are atrocious which makes him basically a glorified full time DH.
I wouldn't mind him DHing for the Angels since he's under club control and reasonably priced
Then again we have Abreu who could DH instead of playing RF or they could resign Vladdy or find another cheap DH since the market seems flooded with them.
It doesn’t seem that Napoli is ever going to get 500 or more at bats with the Angels, so they might as well trade him as part of a package for Halladay if they can get an extension. I still rather have Lackey since you aren’t trading anything, but if he really wants 18 per year for 6 years there is no way that I do that.

Angels willing to discuss Aybar?
This is not the news I was looking for from Tony. Do we really need to be talking Aybar to get this done?
If we move Aybar...then we better go someone sign really good to fill his shoes...
otherwise it feels like 2 steps back to go 2 steps forward.
I think I kinda understand what you mean
Does Brandon Wood sound familiar? The shortstop Brandon Wood?
And then someone else for 3rd (Beltre?).
why not bring back OC?
it may not be a long term solution, but if aybar does depart (still a big if) we could bring back orlando cabrera. remember, he is only two years removed from a gold glove season in an angels uniform.
just throwing it out there…
i doubt we're gonna move aybar.
we didn’t do it last season at the trade deadline, why would we do it now?
"come on, eileen."
What if we fail at Bay and Halladay...
could Grady Sizemore be an option? Along with Ben Sheets? I would love to see Sizemore in an Angels uni. I think we can offer Cleveland a very attractive package. His contract goes through 2011 with a 2012 option. Its unclear that Cleveland would be willing to part with their superstar CF.
They want power. We want respect...
Failure is not an option!
I think it’s hard to defend Tony if we can’t get one of them. I also think that trading for Grady Sizemore doesn’t make a lot of sense when there are still FAs who could help fill the void.
As for Ben Sheets, I don’t want any part of a guy that injury plagued. I think regardless of what happens, Palmer will be our 5th starter because we’d probably give up Saunders in a Doc trade.
by lightupthehalo29 on Dec 8, 2009 5:21 PM PST up reply actions
Won't need Palmer to be the 5th starter.
Because we’ll be re-signing Lackey after we get Halladay. ;)
OK, I'm finally over losing Tex. Thanks Kendry.
other FA options?
name on big bat who plays the OF. Sizemore would be better than Bay or Holliday. And please dont suggest Dye, Thome, Nady, or Damon. Sizemore can also leadoff.

Did I miss a memo?
Are we shopping for a new CF, to add to our collection of Torii and GMJ? Kind of like the Hunt Brothers trying to corner the market on silver?

also, would rather sign rich harden than ben sheets.

Probably not
Brandon Wood is now the Angels starting 3B and therefore nearly untradeable (except for another 3B). Reagins isn’t going to break up Saunders, Weaver, and Santana at least as long as John Lackey’s future is uncertain. The Jays have said they want major-league talent for Halladay, but Conger, Trout, Reckling, and Walden are not major-league ready. I don’t see this deal happening.
On another note, this is why you trade Halladay at the deadline when the potential suitors are there. A parting gift to Jays fans from J. P. Ricciardi.
i don't think saunders, weaver, or santana are unbreakable.
plenty of people have already optioned a pretty nice package of saundo, napoli, and reckling or something and that sounds pretty decent to me.
"come on, eileen."
Jeff Biggs interviewed Soth on The Drive
and he said the Angels were not that interested in Jason Bay. This could be posturing or they are holding out to try to re-sign Lackey and stay in the running for Halladay.

Reagins says they may move Aybar
My guess is that we trade Aybar, Napoli and prospect for Halladay. We might sign a DH like Vlad or Matsui, but I would count on the Angels being pitch first, ask questions later next year.
