Our Newest Angel...
Bobby Abreu!! According to SI.com Jon Heyman the deal is for 1 year worth about 5 Million, including incentives. To me that is a huge bargain. He wanted $16 million per year for 2-3 years and we get him for one year and $5 million. Big help to the club and a good clubhouse guy.
Also, this screws Borass and Man-Ram some more haha. Love it!! I know we have all expressed feelings on this matter yesterday, but now it is a done deal (so far) so now that we have him I am glad. I think some people will change their views and if you don't well we are stuck with him for a year anyways.
I'll be cheering him on now that he is in Angel Red.

you beat me to it
good signing : 5 million, possible 1st round pick next yr. contact, lefty
and, to all th naysayers, his arm is not " atrocious". Arm is better than GA, in my opinion
Tex went to the dark side.
Yes, I was posting a shot...
…while you were posting this.
$5m looks like pretty good business to me. And I should imagine he’ll be the primary DH.
I’d like to see us lose a couple of players next – middle infielder, perhaps an outfielder with a more talented father…
I see red people
Haha

But who and for what?
Figgins is the only one I see going, but will they get much for him? I don’t think so. And if they do get anything what would it be they don’t already have. Possibly just another clog….

Props to the Ninja
Nobody panicked, nobody overpaid. This isn’t a head-scratcher like Philly signing Ibanez for 3 years for an average salary of $10M per, when the guy will be 37 in June. I am sure that front office would love a do-over on that deal, based upon the cold reality of this year’s free agent market.
Instead, we waited, evaluated, and sprung in time for Spring. We signed a still-productive guy for one year at a price less than half his 2007 salary.
Overall, I’d say it was a very nice job.
Agree on all fronts...
I’d still rather have Abreu, but once cost is figured in, this is a great deal. The dominoes are about to fall though – Figgy has to be gone, right?
Abreu as leadoff hitter, perchance?
Jim Scully
I would agree
that Figgins is as good as gone. I mean all he is doing now is blocking Woody. What do they need in return? I would say a #5 guy and I don’t know what else.

Dunno about a #5 for Figgins
…as a straight-up trade. Since he is a free agent at the end of the season, this is going to be a one-year relationship unless the receiving team is able to negotiate an deal beyond 2009.
For that reason, I wouldn’t expect a starter in return, unless it winds up being a deal much like the OC for Garland deal last year, where each had just one more year under contract, or with another Angel player (even a prospect) included in the deal. Starting pitching is just too dear to most GMs to give it up for one year of a player like Figgins (assuming the #5 in question isn’t a complete troll).
I wonder if Reagins has rethought making a run on Peavy now that he addressed the missing bat issue to the best of the market’s ability? It is unfortunate that most of our OF (aside from Willits) are 30+ and no longer cheap players.

Why do you think Figgins is gone?
Unless there’s something I haven’t heard, he’s the third baseman. In my opinion, the person who’s gone is Matthews, Jr. Gone or riding pine.
GMJ has a no-trade clause until next year.
Figgins is in a walk year.
Those are reasons that Figgins is trade bait RIGHT AT THIS MOMENT (imho).

For twice as much money
But a younger player. I think Ninja made the right move for the Angels. Dunn strikes out alot for this type of offense.
We take serious...comedically.
"Good clubhouse guy?"
I really like this signing. I’m getting over my instinctive hatred of recent Yankees and remembering how much I liked Abreu before he became an agent of the Evil Empire.
I’m curious though. Does he really have a reputation as a good clubhouse guy? What have you heard?
I don't know...I'm makin' this up as I go.
I was just taking
Jeff Biggs’s word for it. I found some things on the internet too. Also, they said he is into stats which we all know Soth doesn’t care for.

Into stats?
Uh-oh. That would seem to detract from “good clubhouse guy” status…esp. if he cares more about his individual performance in light of his desire for a mega-deal this offseason, instead of helping the team…though it could go both ways.
Light Up That Halo!
I like it
especially at the price
Outfielders For Sale! This weeks special...GMJ - see Tony for details!
All right
I support this. I don’t think Abreu is the best guy out there. I don’t think the Angels needed to sign him.
But now that he’s signed, I’ll hope for the best and can’t wait to see what he does for the Halos postseason hopes or success—he does have a decent playoff BA, after all, with a flash of homer power.
If anything, it’s nice to get a fresh face into the line-up!
Light Up That Halo!
And it's only one year
If he’s great, great. If he’s not, he’ll be gone quickly enough.
Good signing. Great price.
I don't know...I'm makin' this up as I go.
Well
he is already a type A this year but the skanks did not offer him arb. so we get a steal.

Congrats to the Angels on this great steal….He fits into this team style of play well.He can run and steal bases plus if he bats ahead of Guerrero a good chance Vlad comes back to 100 rbi next year…He is a good hitter, and he does have a decent arm..Like someone else said,he is here now,its not the end of the world and for what he is being paid,a great contract.. Nice work by the Angels…PS- enough about how many HR aguy hits…HR are not everything in baseball…
HR's aren't everything
but man, those moonshots by Naps made me baseballgasm.

That is not a lost opportunity
Dunn’s agent had said repeatedly Dunn didn’t want to play in the AL, lest he become marginallized as a DH, because he wants to play both halves of the inning.
Thus, this isn’t because the Angels lost out on his services (as with Teixeira); it is because more than likely it would have required a ridiculous amount of cash to persuade Dunn to play in the AL and become a DH. The Nationals were patient and left their offer on the table, like a forgiving wife with a middle-age crazy husband, knowing he would eventually return to the table. The Dodgers didn’t offer him anything (apparently his first choice) and no offer came from the Astros, despite the stories out of Chicago. I think Dunn’s agent sensed that Manny was inevitable for the Dodgers and there was no point in waiting forever.
Abreu was the right pick for the Angels; more to the point, he was the only pick.

With an OF full of terrible contracts...
this one actually looks good. DH the guy full time and you just gained yourselves a few wins next year.
Vlad was a terrible contract? Reggie Willits?
Torii’s contract is not great, but it is not terrible. How’s Coco doin? ;)
by Downing Rules on Feb 11, 2009 3:03 PM PST up reply actions
Vlad deal is good; really good actually.
I was referring to Gary Matthews Jr., Juan Rivera, and Torii Hunter. Their deals are all pretty bad. Hunter will be making $18M per for four more years. He is good hitter but is no longer a great fielder (UZR has had him below average for 3 straight years). FanGraphs puts his value around $10mil per year. He turns 34 this year and is sure to decline. So I would put that contract at really bad, but better than GMJ’s; which is one of the worst contracts in the league. Willits is under club control and hasn’t gotten a new deal yet, so no chance for the Angels to mess that up yet. He was really bad last year anyway.
As for the Sox bad contracts, we definitely have given some out over the last few years. I think the Coco deal wasn’t too bad, Lugo deal is horrid, also one of the worst contracts in baseball.
Rivera?
Explain to me how the Rivera contract is bad please. 4 million a year doesn’t seem that bad.
I wrote it below...
but I’ll say it again. He was been below replacement level for two straight years and you guys gave him $12 mil. Replacement level is defined as “freely available talent” meaning that you guys could have got someone just as good for league minimum.
Take a look
At his 2006 stats and tell me how bad it is, or maybe we should have gave J.D. Drew 14 million a year to complete our collection…damn.
So in his career
he’s had one good year, one okay year, and the rest at or below replacement level. You shouldn’t pay a guy based on one good year out of 7. If we went by your logic, we actually should have paid JD Drew $25 mil based on his 2004 year. Drew was terrible in 2007 but actually lived up to his deal in 2008. I’m not saying the Sox are perfect. In fact, I think Theo’s strength is in the high-upside deals, trades and player development. His big money signings have mostly been washes.
Dude
Go post on the Sox site and give Theo a hand job over there!!! Your kind filthe littering our stands at our home games is enough during the season, cant we have our off season! Ya F**kStick!
"Sometimes I'm a Closer... Sometimes I make it Closer"
Wow.
So , I was trying to discuss this stuff with you guys intelligently. I said that I think many of Theo’s free agent deals are washes, if not bad. I like the Abreu signing and I think I made that clear. I doubt many of your comrades would support the GMJ signing or even the Torii Hunter deal. I’ve never seen a game in Anaheim, so I’ve never “littered your stands” but if you’re on the internet, you can be sure to come across some opinions that are different from yours. You might even have to talk to a Sox fan! Terrible.
to be fair...
…he broke his leg in the 2006-07 offseason and really hasn’t has consistent ABs since. He was healthy in 2008, but blocked by GA and Matthews of all people and didn’t get playing time until Matthews forced Mike’s hand.
While his defense isn’t good and will probably be worse post-broken leg, he could probably put up number in the .800+ OPS range.
Go Angels!!
vlad signed for 5/75, won an MVP
and basically carried our club for 4 years. ya, what a bummer that was.
matthews is a bad contract and torii is overpaid, but he at least is useful.
abreu and rivera COMBINED cost the angels 9 million in 2009.
by ihearhowie2.0 on Feb 11, 2009 3:31 PM PST up reply actions
Rivera deal is bad.
He has been below replacement level for two straight years and you guys guaranteed him $12 mil.
I think it was more on upside
While I agree, the guaranteed money was boneheaded, but he can’t be as bad as last year.
replacement level analysis
I agree that its low risk in that there’s not that much money being committed, but why even risk the $4 mil per year? Especially when they can get Bobby Abreu for less guaranteed money. The Abreu deal makes the Rivera deal look even dumber.
Juan Rivera: further analysis into his value
FanGraphs has an excellent article regarding Juan Rivera.
Free Agent Bargain: Juan Rivera
Here are some of the highlights from the article:
1) Rivera’s signature skill has always been his power, and that hasn’t disappeared. Even with the health problems and limited playing time, he posted a .191 ISO last year.
2) In the final three months of the season, Rivera hit .268/.299/.505, and while the OBP isn’t exactly impressive, the 22 extra base hits (12 of which were home runs) show that Rivera’s still got some juice in his swing.
3) If we assume that Rivera’s true talent BABIP is more in the .280 range (it’s .292 for his career, but we’ll knock it down a bit for age and injuries), and the rest of his skills remain intact, he’s a .290 to .300 hitter. Even with his aggressive approach, .300/.340/.500 isn’t out of the question.
FanGraphs further investigated the value of Rivera relative to his contract here
With a 1-year WAR value of 0.9, a 3-yr deal is valued at $12.15 million. This is very close to the $12.75 million of the actual contract.
Hindsight is 20/20. The Abreu deal is a bargain relative to Rivera’s contract because back in December teams, players, and agents did not realize that the free agent market would collapse.
Ain't no stoppin' us now. We got the groove!!

Our friends over at LL
are trying to convince themselves that we would be a better team with Reggie over Bobby.
Well, if they're that hot on Reggie, maybe we could trade him to SEA for Felix Hernandez.
Only if the Mariners kick in some cash, of course.
:)
You must be talking about Buzzy’s son. He will always be an Angel to us. A cynic might even say you guys sent him north as a Trojan horse.
Our current FO has barley moved in and has quite the mess to clean up. Time will tell.
Our current OF may be the best defensively in the league. On the other hand Ichiro’s going to hit his singles and steal bases but after that the offense is highly questionable and not exactly oozing with power. Your OF certainly should hit (for what you’re paying they better!) but things might be ‘interesting’ defensively to say the least.
This is all chatter of course. Almost time for ST and thank God for that! Let the games begin and we’ll see what happens.

Abreu Jersey
Is anybody going to get one, I’m thinking of getting one to complement my Vlad and Torri jersey
I’d only pick one up if it was a game-used one sold at a Team Yard Sale in 2014 and on the “under $20” rack.

Love the signing of Bobby...
Esp for the bargain price of $5mm + inc. Thanks to HH, when I heard the news I came immediately to the site for your opinions.
Is it safe to assume there’s no chance we’ll resign GA?
exactly....
as soon as GA signed up with Boras, I think he lost a lot of opportunities. GA is SEA or OAK-bound
