Poll: Who starts at Shortstop?
With the signing of Bobby Abreu likely making Chone Figgins the starting Third Baseman, who would you start at Shortstop?
Yes, Aybar did a decent job last season. And yes, Izturis is a phenomenal job prior to his injury. But if Wood doesn't get a crack this year, how long would we have to wait?
Do we go ahead and just platoon them?
Should we really give more thought in possibly even trading Chone?
What do you do Halo fans?

As far as I'm concerned, it should be Brandon Wood's job to lose
No ifs, ands, or buts about it.
But that won’t happen.

I have reservations about just handing the job to Wood
There were quotes earlier about him having to take control over his career and I think you’ll see that here. Aybar is a defensive gem who still has some offensive upside. You dont just put that on the bench and stunt when he’s already shown he can play in the bigs.
Wood’s power upside is enormous obviously but if he hits .150 in spring again, can you really blame the Angels for not handing him a job? Ya, he needs AB’s to develop but the Abreu signing signals they still want to win in 2009. Between Morales figuring himself out and Mathis playing every once in a while, Aybar is probably a safer bet until someone gets hurt.
Exactly
Agree with all above. However, I think it’s time to ride with Wood.
I think we’ll see Figgins or Aybar traded, with Wood given the starting job at whichever position becomes open—i.e., 3B if Figgins departs, SS if Aybar departs. Worst-case scenario, you’ve got Izturis, or, gasp!, Quinlan to back him up if all goes to shit. Sean Rodriguez is also always waiting.

…sorry, i still have bad memories of him starting at the home opener last year.
Kotch would've had that.

The entire organization is quoted as saying they see Wood as a MLB SS
Put your money where your mouth is.

Wood probably will.
I think he won’t get much opportunity to play this year and I think they’re not going to re-sign Figgins, thus, preparing Wood to take over in 2010.
ya, they just need to get figgins out of here
because by that logic, youre theoretically stunting aybar’s development a full year. I know he’d probably end up playing anyway because figgins/kendrick would probably get hurt at some point, but i think the infield of the future is Wood at 3rd and Aybar at SS.
by ihearhowie2.0 on Feb 11, 2009 4:53 PM PST up reply actions
I never said that
I said that Wood would be on the bench for another year while Figgins enjoys his last year. I would rather have Wood at SS than Aybar though but that won’t happen
ya, my bad
i was really just speaking generally to the idea of Wood at 3rd in 2010 after SS in 2009. I should have made that more clear or probably not replied under your comment

I am worried about 2009. Which will be Figgy
2010 it is all Brandon’s

Does Aramis Ramirez' contract
Run out this year? If not, then OK, but otherwise I think he’d be worth a serious look.

Wood
i hope the job is open in spring and he wins the job. if he doesn’t win it then is it better for him to sit on the bench or to send him back down to AAA to get his AB?
by HALO_86 on Feb 11, 2009 4:53 PM PST reply actions 1 recs
I hope the Angels just hand the job to him
He damn deserves it…release Aybar, trade Figgins, DFA Maicer.
He is going to be the next jumbo sized shortstop like Cal Ripken Jr.
Or the next great third baseman like Phil Hiatt.
RELEASE
Erick Aybar?

We have the most talented young defensive SS in the game
Also, at least one left-handed SP who doesn’t strike people out. Seeing as how Chone Figgins ain’t the future, and Brandon Wood very well might be, I’d trade Figgins, give Wood a bunch of rope at 3B (in a lineup that will score some runs), and see if Aybar can hit enough to justify his glove? Remember, even if they’re inconsistent at the plate, they’ll combine to provide terrific D (as young shortstops tend to do) on the left side of the infield. Plus, with Figgins gone, you have home run power at 7 lineup spots, great doubles power at the 8th, and then Aybar. That lineup would probably hit more home runs than any Angel team in a while.
by mattwelch on Feb 11, 2009 5:26 PM PST reply actions 1 recs
I totally agree
The addition of Abreu has shifted my stance on giving Wood a shot. The lineup would be able to support his growth period. The issue I have is we can’t trade Figgy! We have a lot of injury prone guys and I want to maintain our depth and flexibility. If Kendrick gets hurt, Figgy jumps in and plays 2B. If Rivera struggles, Figgy goes to the OF. If Kendry struggles, Abreu can spend some time at 1B and Figgy is in play again.
Not much left on the FA market in terms of pitching. I say we try Mosely or Adenhart and then pick someone up mid-year in a trade. Who knows Loux or Ortega could be ready as well.

Aybar should start at Short.....this guy has sick range.....
and he hit the shit out of the ball in the DWL just like Kendry. Wood should play 3B and get rid of Figgy. Aybar/Izturis can take over the Leadoff role with no problem.
Put Kendry Morales at 1B, and move Sean Rodriguez to 3B......NOW LETS GO WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It should be whoever does the best in spring training
it makes the most sense. If Wood really wants to play, hes gotta show it.

sent to the minors after Spring Training
then umm… well i’m pretty sure watched it when he shot that homer that beat us

i still have no idea why they did that
i would say for money, but they signed him to a long-term deal.
Kotch would've had that.
by howiestheman on Feb 12, 2009 2:06 PM PST up reply actions
nice try.
The whole baseball world knew Longoria was a stud and thought the Rays were crazy when they didn’t break camp with him on the roster. A player doesn’t magically get discovered in spring training, and the stats over those 20 or so games are completely meaningless. The team should know RIGHT NOW what players they’re going to break camp with. Spring training is to get in shape for the season. Yes, fringe guys can win a job based on how well they perform in spring, but that should not be how you pick your starting shortstop.
Longoria didnt not make the rays team
he started the season in AAA becuase of his arbitration clock. If they keep him down in AAA for like a month or so, then they get an extra year of him on the cheap
Lets go angels

Aybar plays short
And Wood plays 3rd. It’s painfully obvious Figgins is the odd man out here… but I don’t think the Angels will realize it until it’s too late.

You know,
teams look at us and other fans look at our team and GM’s etc all look at the Angels and say, “I wish I had three eligible players at each infield position to start.” “Damnit, I don’t even have one guy who can start for any other team!” So this is a good thing, but needs to be resolved before the start of spring training. I think the infield needs to know who is playing so they can start getting use to each other get the feel for everything. Let’s do it now!

I think it will be Wood or Aybar.
Macier has become a starter by default each of the last 2 seasons due to injuries. Maicer is more suited as a utility guy off the bench anyways since he can play 3 positions whereas Aybar and Wood only play 2.
I hope Wood “wins” the job. He needs AB’s to reach his potential.
by Chzburger Jones on Feb 14, 2009 8:11 PM PST reply actions
Looking at Woods UZR on fangraphs, hes a bad SS (in small sample size granted)
Id much rather Wood concentrate on his offense at the less challenging 3B and just let Aybar do his thing with the glove at SS (top 3 in the league defensively BTW). Not sure how Figgy works into this however…
That'll only happen if that one prospect is the second coming of Christ and redemption for mankind can only be achieved by smacking many balls out of the yard.
