What would you say if I told you the newest Angel would put up the following numbers in 2009:

152 games, 546 ABs, 98 runs
35 2Bs, 15 HRs, 79 RBIs
22 SBs, 73 BBs
.283/.369/.445, 114 OPS+

Not terrible, right? Now consider that each one of those stats represents the WORST Abreu has performed in each category over the last decade.

In fact, he's usually been much better, drawing 100 walks 8 times, driving in 100 runs the last 6, and so on.

Now, he's more likely to hit those lower marks than anything much higher, but he really has been both great and consistent on offense for 10 years running.

i likes

maybe 6 less homers and 9 more doubles but YEAH YEAH YEAH!!!!!!!

by Rev Halofan on Feb 11, 2009 8:34 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Like Rev said

a few more doubles, a few fewer homers. Maybe a few fewer SBs, too. I’d keep the rest, and add a couple ticks to BA and SLG.

It would have to be one hell of an offensive year in baseball for an .890 OPS to go for only 119 OPS+, though.

Illogical Emotional Comment of the Day

I’m tired of the Halos not have some serious run support. If Abreu can knock in the ribbies then we need to put people on base so he can do it. Vlad, Abreucapa aaaaaaaaaaand Juan.

All 100 + ribbies this season. Lets do it!

Am I alone on this boat?

I MUCH MUCH preferred the “psychadelic 70’s Euro-midgets” used in the Gene Wilder version.

No

I liked the Wilder version better (but I liked the book the best).

Who hits fourth?

I’ve been wondering this all day.

I really believe that Chupacabreu should hit second. But if he does, who hits fourth? Vladdy? Then who hits third?

You just KNOW it’s time for us all to post our prospective lineups? Right?

I don't know...I'm makin' this up as I go.

by ArkAngel on Feb 11, 2009 9:37 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

i would think abreu hits 2nd, vlad 3rd, torii 4th

unless scoscia gets really crazy and bats kendrick 3rd or something

thats not entirely crazy is it? Howie’s ceiling would slot him as a 3 hole guy…but not yet.

Here

Figgins
Abreu
Vlad
Hunter
Napoli
Rivera
Kendrick
Morales
Aybar/Wood

And some of those youngsters toward the bottom would move around a lot based on production.

this is the same lineup i came up with laying in bed last night...

It's not just about breaking things up

Most of our guys don’t have extreme platoon splits anyway. I think we can leverage Hunter’s abilities best by getting him lots of good pitches with (hopefully) Figgins on base and the heart behind him. He’s a smart hitter, capable of adjusting to the situation. And he has some speed on the basepaths. He’s almost Orlando Cabrera, who was a phenomenal number 2 hitter, with 12-16 more homeruns.
It also staggers our high patience / low contact and low patience / high contact guys, which could make things hell on the opposing pitchers.
Lastly, it moves Naps up to a more crucial role in the line-up, something he’s more than capable of…

by rghan on Feb 12, 2009 2:23 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

i love the idea of Hunter batting 2nd

unfortunately, i doubt Soth will… im sure he still thinks Hunter’s a great cleanup guy.

Kotch would've had that.

by howiestheman on Feb 12, 2009 2:38 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Well, he did experiment successfully with Anderson there, and he and Hunter are similar hitters (age adjusted, of course)… And Hunter has speed. I think he may come around now that there’s a bit more power in the line-up overall.

by rghan on Feb 12, 2009 2:43 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

i'd agree if not

for this:

“Manager Mike Scioscia’s early blueprints have Abreu hitting second, between Chone Figgins and Vladimir Guerrero, followed by Hunter, Morales, Mike Napoli, Juan Rivera, Howie Kendrick and Erick Aybar or Maicer Izturis, although perhaps not in that order.”

Kotch would've had that.

No no no

I can’t believe Naps would hit 4th. I don’t like Hunter there either, but…

Figgins
Abreu
Vlad
Hunter
Kendrick
Napoli
Rivera
Morales
Aybar

That’s my guess. For now. Howie’s high average and gap power slots him fifth.

I don't know...I'm makin' this up as I go.

by ArkAngel on Feb 11, 2009 11:38 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

that's probably closest

although i still cant believe we’re going to let Wood rot in AAA or on the bench if favor of a couple of slap-singles hitters.

Kotch would've had that.

by howiestheman on Feb 11, 2009 11:42 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

No No No

I cant believe Kendrick would bat 5th. I dont like Figgy either, (If Traded spot), so….

Figgins (Aybar…..did good as Lead off in DWL)
Abreu
Vlad
Hunter
Morales
Napoli
Rivera
Kendrick
Aybar (Wood)

Put Kendry Morales at 1B, and move Sean Rodriguez to 3B......NOW LETS GO WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by acuda27 on Feb 12, 2009 3:25 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I know you really love Morales

but thinking from a neutral point of view, you have to realize that his relative inexperience probably precludes him from at least STARTING the season in the 5 spot.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Feb 12, 2009 3:37 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I think you need to have Morales

up at 5 or 6 to break up the R hand dominant lineup

left handed bat

plus it gives him somewhat better protection, which helps him

by ihearhowie2.0 on Feb 12, 2009 9:05 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

i'd actually think about starting him in the 2-slot

he’s got a career .373 OBP in the minors (i know, i know… but it’s something) and he’s a good hitter. i know Soth would have pop a few blood vessels by him not stealing bases, but it wouldn’t be bad to look at.

Kotch would've had that.

by howiestheman on Feb 12, 2009 10:49 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I seriously doubt it.

In fact, I’ll bet that Rivera hits fifth, now that I’ve thought about it a bit more. Experience goes a long way and Morales doesn’t have it yet. I’ll bet it’s:

Figgy
Abreu
Vlad
Hunter
Rivera
Kendrick
Morales
Napoli
Aybar

The whole “split things up with a lefty” doesn’t hold up well when there just aren’t that many lefties to split things up with.

I don't know...I'm makin' this up as I go.

by ArkAngel on Feb 12, 2009 11:10 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

ehh

That was mostly my ideal lineup. The most probably one would have Hunter cleanup, Howie and Napoli 7-8, with Izturis somehow in the linup.

He put those numbers up with A-Fraud hitting behind him.

I just think there is a reason he only got a one-year deal. He’s onto his Steve Finley downward slope.

Hope I’m wrong.

i had the guy in fantasy baseball last year

he would literally have to have fallen off a steep cliff to pull a finley in 2009

by ihearhowie2.0 on Feb 11, 2009 9:58 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

He is 5 years yonger than when Steve Finley signed

and they test for roids nowadays so his numbers seem to be legit.

by Rev Halofan on Feb 11, 2009 10:27 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Was Finley a juicer?

And hey, I hope I’m wrong. I just don’t think this guy is much of an upgrade over GA,
and he is certainly miles away from Tex.

I wouldn’t have been happy with Dunn either….blech. I’d have liked if they steered away from Rivera and went after Manny, however.

I've got nothing.

by bc56274 on Feb 12, 2009 8:34 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Finley's downward slope

was a cliff. Plus, he had that magic key fob that protected him from the EMF from the field lights.

I don’t think Abreu has a magic key fob.

finley didn't fall off a cliff, slip down a slope, or any of that shit...

finley was a terribly inconsistent player throughout his ENTIRE career. one good year, three bad, one good year, two bad, etc. he was a risky pick up, especially at the age that he was. abreu has been CONSISTENT throughout his career. i see nothing analogous between these two players.

If Figgy and Abreu hit ahead of Vlad

Does anyone else think Vlad will lead the league in GIDP?

I’m very happy with this move. Finally the FO brought in someone that understands the strikezone instead of Hillenbrand or Finley. Abreu is the perfect guy to bat 2nd in the Angels lineup me thinks.

Analyze This:

If we lose Figgins, as many are suggesting, and Mice Tits doesnt get playing time on account of Aybar/Wood, then we lose 2 switch hitters, turning us into a RH lineup (ex-Abreu) like our SP was (pre-Saunders)

I was weary of Abooboo...

because word around the Philly campfire was that he put up numbers and little else. More importantly, I just assumed he meant a long, expensive contract that may saddle the team.

But at this price, I LOVE him now.

Maybe he’ll let me take him out for a frozen yogurt and a topping.

by The Clyde on Feb 12, 2009 10:43 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

i think this contract shows he's about this team and winning

i’m sure he could have done better than $5 mill SOMEWHERE.

by NoDakHalo on Feb 12, 2009 1:54 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

It's in a player's best interest right now, if they're really good

to take a short term contract. With the economy the way it is, and baseball spending as thrifty as it is, you want a one year contract so that you’re back on the market again very soon (and in Abreu’s case, with his age, the sooner the better) in a (hopefully) better economy. This gives himself the chance to prove his worth for a season and immediately be worth a longer term investment after the season is over, when he can lock in for more guaranteed dollars.

Based on the Abreu acquisition...

Baseball Prospectus’ projected standings showed a four-win increase for the Angels from 80 to 84 and took first place away from the A’s. Take that for it’s worth (not much, really).

I mean, I’ll admit I have a huge Angels bias, but the only way I see the A’s favored is if we just leave the mound empty every fifth game. Or start Moseley.

This post exposes...

the “no-brainer” move that this signing was.

As another non-related frame of reference, four out of four Dodger fans I work with were mumbling to themselves out loud this morning as they walked tight circles around the facility: “damn coletti, damn boras, damn manny…”

by Downing Rules on Feb 12, 2009 5:43 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I think Abreu is ideally a number 2 hitter, but for our lineup....

I think he should be a number 3 hitter. Our lineup isn’t as strong as it probably should be and I think since Abreu is one of the best hitters in our lineup right now, you want him in more of an RBI situation. I mean Torii Hunter only had 70-something RBI’s and he was batting 4th or 5th most of the time. Abreu could be more of an 85-90 RBI guy or possibly even 100 if in the middle of the order instead of the 2-hole so I think batting him 2nd is a waste of a bat….at least in our lineup. Here’s how I would do it:

1) Figgins 3B
2) Hunter CF
3) Abreu LF
4) Guerrero DH
5) Rivera RF
6) Morales 1B
7) Napoli C
8) Kendrick 2B
9) Wood SS

I put Hunter in the 2-hole for lack of a better option. I guess you could put Abreu there but I like having the right-left-right alignment to create match-up problems. Hunter actually had a decent OBP last season given his mediocre batting average. Rivera can replace Hunter’s power in the 5th spot. I think we all would like Kendrick to develop into that ideal number 2 hitter that we have envisioned him being but I can’t put him there until he learns to take a walk.

by Chzburger Jones on Feb 13, 2009 9:24 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

In defense of Torii...

I wonder what kind of OBP the folks batting in front of him put up?
