Angels games to be simulcast on KFWB
According to a team press release, KFWB will carry 110 weekday Angels games.
Postseason games are included in the deal.
"The ability to provide fans unprecedented coverage throughout the Greater Los Angeles market has been a priority for us," said Angels President Dennis Kuhl. "This partnership with KFWB and the CBS Radio family is an important one for our respective sponsors and advertisers, but more importantly, for our fans throughout the Southern California region."
Kudos to the Angel front office for following through on yet another promise to the fans. Now, if we can just get them to broadcast weekday Cactus League games live. . . .

Not a stupid question at all
It was a stupid omission on my part.

This is good news for those of us who live in LA or Ventura county.
830 doesn’t come in well, especially at night, when it gets interference from some Ventura county station.

I agree with 830 not coming in well
But does 980? (I’m in Ventura County.)

Live in Ventura
This is great news for me since AM 830 is weak here.

It's good news for Pasadena, too
at least where I live. There’s a huge granite shelf hereabouts, which is great for surviving earthquakes, but lousy for AM groundwave propagation. The only way I can get KLAA in at night is to put the radio in the basement.
It was a similar situation for me in north Glendale growing up; I got used to listening to Angel games accompanied by a loud whine. It sounded like being at a Dodger game!

funny
in my part of Pasadena, I get 830 fairly well, though not as well as KFWB. Still, KLAA comes in SO much better than the previous station (710 KSPN) that I can’t possibly complain.

I'm in Bungalow Heaven
We’re over solid rock here, which is bad for groundwave propagation, and groundwaves are what is required for good AM reception unless the antenna is close enough to deliver a consistent skywave. KLAA’s antenna is too far away to push a signal through the granite at night; it comes in worse here than KSPN does in Anaheim. During the day, KLAA comes in fine with the assistance of a Select-A-Tenna. KFWB never comes in well, but it comes in better than KLAA at night because it’s closer.

Cal Tech/PCC Area
I guess just a few blocks south & east makes a huge difference.

We're farther away than that
but it’s as much a function of geology than geography.

Valencia / Santa Clarita ...
I barely get 830 ever up here. Hopefully I can get hear some of the 980 games. I miss listening to games on the radio since I moved up here.

Weren’t the Dodgers on KFWB before moving back to KABC?

Yes, but
doesn’t MLB make them block the games from their stream?

There are other reasons to get XM Radio
but unlimited access to the Angel games clinched it for me. Anywhere I drive, I can get the game. No having the signal fade out when getting out of the area, or disappearing when the car goes under a bridge.
I know satellite radio is having a tough go of it right now and they might wind up stiffing MLB on the 2009 season payment, but so long as it lasts it is great to have.

I agree
the baseball coverage is what has kept me with XM. I can drive to Vegas and still here the game broadcast

As in, the game comes in in Vegas like you’re still here.

Does this mean the end of Terry Smith on weekdays?
I hope not; he’s my favorite on radio. As far as I could tell, he was the one guy who wasn’t on TV last year; hence, no weekday radio this year if it’s a simulcast, and last year’s pattern continutes. I never could figure out what they were doing with the rotation last year. It seemed that they drew names out of a hat, and it was, “You two do TV, you go do radio with Terry.”

No change in personnel was mentioned
It’s not a simulcast of radio and TV, but of KLAA and KFWB. Think of it as KFWB joining the Angels Radio Network. I don’t anticipate any change in the broadcast itself, except perhaps the pre- and post-game segments will be shorter, and the breaks longer, to accommodate KFWB’s news and traffic updates. That’s just a guess.
BTW, I like Terry too. I think the reason he’s always on radio is because they always have two play-by-play guys on radio, and Terry’s third chair in that section.

I am kinda pissed about this
because the have traffic on the ONES and KNX has traffic on the FIVES and I switch back and forth … anyone else have a good traffic radio station that can be heard in the L.A. area??
by Rev Halofan on Feb 16, 2009 8:51 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
sigalert.com screw the radio, since I usually turn it on at the 2 or the 6 and have just missed the traffic report.

google maps with real time traffic conditions. It's free. You can slew and zoom in to your hwy of interest.

Not particularly useful when you're actually on the freeway.
I’ve been able to use KNX/KFWB traffic reports to avoid bottlenecks — my favorite was on my way to an Angels game, and there was that closure of the 5S-91E ramp. I managed to pick up the 605 to the 91 back to the 5 and avoid that whole mess.

Googling traffic reports is what a co-driver is for
besides qualifying you for car pool lanes and, uh, stuff like that.

That's the downside of this
I was happy when the Dodger games moved to KABC for just this reason. Well, that and the fact that KABC does not come in at all where I live, so I never run the risk of inadvertently hearing "Encanarcion.’
