Angels, Ervin Santana Agree to an Extension
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [February 14, 2009 at 11:51am CST]
According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, the Angels have agreed to a four-year extension with Ervin Santana. There is an option for a fifth year.
this is great news and so last minute. What does that exactly mean in terms of him being locked in as an Angel pitcher? what year will this expire? i haven't seen the terms yet.
I'm sure there's more to follow, but at least he'll be there for full spring training. Is he scheduled for wbc? Does anyone know?
So close to the arb hearing.

it's a 4 year deal...
dollar amounts have yet to be released.
pulling #'s out of my ass here...
I’ll guess 4 yr- 33.0 million
the speculation is
4 years/$30 million, with a one year/$12 million option.
good signing, IMO, as long as Santana doesn’t magically turn back into ’07 form.
Kotch would've had that.
sorry, just read the link. 2 years includes the option year.
Looks like a good deal for everyone.
I was just checking the ages of the Angel roster yesterday. Besides for the OF and the current back of the bullpen, this team has many players coming into their physical primes this year. If just a few break out, this team will be scary good for a long time.
yeah but isn't "except for the OF" kind of a big deal/problem?
Considering we have very little in the way of serious prospects?

we do have quite a few picks for this year's draft
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
Yes, though also no.
We got a lot of offense from our OF/DH slots last year, and will do so again this year. But yeah, we need to spend some of those picks (and hopefully some trade surplus) on young OF talent as well. I’m not high on Bourjos, and there ain’t many besides him.
There is also always the option for a trade too...
With a log-jam of young talent., especially amongst infielders, it seems only inevitable that we wheel and deal some of them in the next couple years to fill out our lack of outfield we will eventually have when Vlad and Torii start to seriously deteriorate.
In addition, what are the chances of some of these guys converting to OF? I would love to see S-Rod on the team permanently (which I guess could still happen depending on what happens in spring). It just seems that it might behoove some of these young up and comers to diversify where they can play defensively to increase their chances of making the team while giving our organization some other options.
I guess we will see in years to come…pretty log-jammed all over right now

S-Rod
played a good center in the minors, and would make a pretty awesome defensive corner outfielder. Let’s just hope he can bring his last year’s AAA k-rate to the majors.
good to know...
I think that guy has some serious talent and could be much more useful than Willits and even GMJ.

fun stat:
Ervin is the youngest active MLB pitcher with at least 50 wins.
i didn’t know that.
Kotch would've had that.

right
in this article it says that Vlad and Ervin WILL NOT be in the WBC.
Kotch would've had that.

the deal is 4 years/$30 million with a $13 million option for 2013. it also carries a $1 million buyout.
Kotch would've had that.
if the economy bounces back, 13 million for a potential ace in 2013 could be a major steal

thats what im thinking too
Kotch would've had that.

I do not see how it wouldn't be
Look at Sabathia and Oliver Perez’s contracts.
I guess I already used my Manny bomb for the month?
Excellent job.
And I’m with Red114. Once Lackey’s signed I’ll breathe easier.
I don't know...I'm makin' this up as I go.
The arb hearing was cancelled/rescheduled until next week
I guess this is why. They were close.
Angel Pitching, Angel Defense - get past that.

w00000000000 way to go Tony and Arte.
12/19/08 - Thank you KLJ for coming into my life.

Tony doing alright this offseason
after losing Tex…
Hasn’t paniced and overpaid and signed areas of need…
Outfielders For Sale! This weeks special...GMJ - see Tony for details!
And "losing" Tex wasn't his fault...
…or Mike’s…or Arte’s.
They made their best offer after 2 months of treating him very well. I’m REAL tired of the sports media painting that as a failure for the team.
I don't know...I'm makin' this up as I go.
Well,
If you don’t do this that would be kind of dumb, why wouldn’t you want to lock a player like Ervin up for that on such a great contract.
Your right
We probable would have signed Santana. Lackey on the other hand….

I agree - I'm not blaming the Ninja
Just stating that in lieu of losing Tex – he has done a great job. Tex was priority #1 and we didn’t get him but he didn’t panic and over pay for an Ibanez or Abreau (had we signed him right after losing Tex) and got a more than capable replacement for KRod at a great price.

Trade Lackey for Peavy
And dispense with the mystery

unless you were kidding
this isnt the nba, expiring contracts arent a good thing to trade for
by ihearhowie2.0 on Feb 14, 2009 8:07 PM PST up reply actions
actually this might not be a bad idea
throw in a prospect or two, and resign lackey after he finds out what its like to really pitch behind no offense. When he loses 12 2-1 games, hell be begging to come back to the angels powerhouse lineup. And we get Peavy
That'll only happen if that one prospect is the second coming of Christ and redemption for mankind can only be achieved by smacking many balls out of the yard.

Or we can just re-sign Lackey
And avoid another clusterf**k when he goes to the Yankees or Sux.
Light Up That Halo!
With that type of logic
You can bring Silva and Washburn to the Angels, who between them had perhaps the worst records of any 2 starters in a starting 5 rotation including era, blame it on poor offensive performance by the Mariners and the Angels would have two decent starting pitchers.
How would you know if the pitcher really sucks on his own, or whether he sucks as a group suck?
what?
i was kinda joking. And how do Silva and Washburn enter into this. They suck, and im not talking about W/L records.
I was kinda just wondering how Lackey would like our offense after suffering through a year of the padres crappy lineup. Obviously im not serious about this

What this means....
is now that Ervin is “fat & happy”, he will have a below expectations season.
I hope the “F” I am wrong. I love Ervin, but he just doesn’t strike me as the personality type to stay motivated when he gets his financial reward.
When I'm not at the stadium, I'd rather be watching my Halos back in Costa Rica!
okay maybe that was a tad too harsh...
but your comment is seriously unfounded. This guy has never made over a million yet and you don’t know him personally, so what are you going off of? The fact that he has a cool, calm demeanor? Isn’t that a good thing in a pitcher?
by BryanHarvey'sMoustache on Feb 14, 2009 8:45 PM PST up reply actions
i think its just a broad assumption
thats not really off base. he signed the deal, so at least subconsciously there is less incentive. thats why there such a thing as “contract years” and guys like gmj get overpaid for a fluke year.
do i think this is the case with ervin? no
but not sure where you got the “hint” of “racism.”
Racism and the Angels has been widely reported in the OC Register.
Just ask everybody’s favorite uncle, Jeff Miller.
Since nobody here personally knows Ervin
there isn’t anything anyone can say with certainty about him…ME INCLUDED. I was basing it on a feeling and his demeanor. I also stated I hope the “F” I’m wrong.
It’s sad how much the term “Racist” is SERIOUSLY thrown out there.
As an Angels fan, I am hoping everyone on the team has a great year. Including Ervin.

Fangraphs has a nice article about the signing : http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/santana-the-younger-signs
Its a great sign, IMO, but I wonder what Lackey thinks of it.
Go Angels!!
I Can't wait
To purchase my Authentic Alternate Santana Jersey.
