Pedro Martinez

Now that Minaya has basically said Pedro will not be back with the Mets, what do you guys think of him as a fit for the Halos 5th starter spot? We could sign him to a 1 year, incentive laden deal and make him earn the job in Spring Training. He can't be worse than Moseley or Adenhart, right? And if he is.....we can you know....replace him with Moseley or Adenhart.

And since I'm pretty much convinced that he will never last a full season again as a full-time starter, maybe instead of considering him as a starter, he could be a reliever/spot-starter. This should help get him through the season and it could potentially help out our bullpen (displacing Speier) and he could hold down the fort until Escobar comes back.

not a fan

but I think he could be a great clubhouse guy for the youngins, IF he is ready to accept moving into that part of his career. doing so would seem to strengthen his chances at getting an after-playing gig in some organization.

If he comes cheap, he may not be a bad option:

Let him battle for a rotation spot in ST. If not, he could be a good insurance plan in case Speier doesn’t bonce back.

Only problem would be the price, is he worth taking the risk if we have Escobar coming back?

Did those of you that are saying you aren't a "fan" of Pedro

ever see him pitch? He has had the most dramatic peak (albeit a shortish peak) of most any Post-WWII starter. He was just stunning when he was with the Expos and Sox. I mean, really, really special. I can understand not “rooting” for the guy, but baseball fans – in my mind – are fans of the game, and Pedro was damn fun to watch when he was in his prime. He had no-hit stuff every time he picked up the ball from 1997 to 2004.

The dude has pitched almost 2800 innings in MLB. He has given up less than 2200 hits. His career WHIP is 1.05.

In 2000 he allowed 128 hits in 217 innings. He K’d 284 people in those 217 innings. He had an ERA+ of 291 that year. (BTW – ERA+ is a park adjusted/league adjusted figure where 100 is the league average pitcher. Anything higher is above average, lower is below average. A great season by Lackey in 2007 measured in at 151 ERA+.)

That is crazy people – he wasn’t just fun to watch – he was ecstasy on the mound for about 8 seasons. Say what you will about the extra-curricular stuff with him, but no one was more dominating than him in his prime seasons during his era. No one.

That all said, I don’t want the Halos touching post-surgery Pedro in 2009. He had an ERA+ of 75 last year. Moseley is likely to beat that in 2009.

Here are his career stats. They are stunning.

ha

when I said “not a fan,” I meant in him being our 5th man for the very post surgery reasons you listed.

of his career, I am a huge fan. he has been exciting to watch, and will be considered one of the greatest.

but associating the Pedro of old to the name of now would be wrong. He cannot any longer do what he did.

Ahhh...sorry feNOMINAL...

I agree completely – not worth the time/money now – but stunning in the early 2000’s…

I saw him twice … a 1-0 affair he won in Anaheim quite a while ago and the infamous “Vlad Guerrero 9RBI night” in 2004. I personally took him off his game by yelling loudly and heckling him from section 124 in 2004. Yeah, that was me.

I'm a Pedro fan...

But I am so glad that the only time I saw him live was Vladdy’s 9 RBI night you speak of. One of the best times I have ever had at an Angel game. And even though I am a fan of Pedro’s, I still heckled the shit out of him, right along with you. That was a great night. My voice was useless for a good 4 days after.

Apologies in advance.

What about the game

Where Ramon Ortiz outpitched him in a 2-1 or 3-2 game, something like that. Everyone was ready to anoint him “Little Pedro” after that game.

Like I said,

Pedro can’t be much worse than Moseley and given the right contract, we could afford to dump him. And since he is a future Hall of Famer, he could help put some asses in seats which is more important now given this crappy economy.

Not a huge fit

If the same thing happens that happened with Abreu (get him for way below expected value), then I think this could help the team out.

Might be interesting

He’s Moseley with far, far, far more upside.

I'd rather see that $3 million go...

towards raising the bonus expectations of the best players in this year’s draft. If we can inject enough “signability concerns” into the amateurs that we like best, teams like Pittsburgh and Kansas City might shy away from them and allow them to fall to us.

Ultimately, all of our money comes out of the same pot (Arte’s wallet), and we WANT this draft to be expensive.

You're absolutely right (in my opinion).

That money would be best spent on signing bonuses for drafted players who’ve dropped. I still feel the best route is acquiring a #5 guy through trade. Hopefully, they can get a pitcher who’s salary is comparable to the player given (probably not likely, but one can hope).

I was uncool before uncool was cool.

not in the AL

Some NL team should take a flyer on him, maybe the Padres.

If we’re looking to sign anybody, it should be maybe another body for the bullpen.

Like Chad Cordero

Why not? Dude’s making a comeback and actually has some upside, and he’s specifically expressed a desire to pitch for the Angels. Could be a cheap 1-2 year deal while he proves he’s still got it.

Blind faith

I’d rather believe that we have yet another diamond in the rough for that 5th spot, and the the Downward Speier will have an upward trend.

Welcome Bobby 'Big Bat' Abreu.

i think it was in today's la times that...

myspacecobar could be way ahead of schedule for his return. i know it’s early and a lot could still go wrong but if that’s the case moseley/ortega/adenhart/loux might just have to hold down his spot for about 8-10 starts. but i think we’ve been down this road before w/myspacescobar thinking he was ready to pitch.

by thejd on Feb 15, 2009 8:34 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I like the idea

At this point you can’t count on Pedro, but if he’s cheap he could turn into a nice bonus.

by RallyMonkey5 on Feb 16, 2009 2:42 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

I agree. Why not take a chance on Pedro?

Most teams need six to eight (sometimes more) starters to make it through a season. Bill James project Pedro for 20 starts and a 3.32 ERA – perhaps a little optimistic, but still…

The Red Sox took fliers on both Brad Penny and John Smoltz at about $5M each plus incentives. If Pedro can be had – at a cheaper cost – why not? It couldn’t hurt, and could possibly help a lot. I’d consider it.
