LA Times: Tony wants to negotiate, Lackey maybe not
Daily update via the Times. Interesting in that it says someone familiar with the Angels' thinking says Tony plans on opening negotiations soon to get it done before the season but also notes that Lackey was "surprised" they didnt approach him over the winter and that he might be interested in testing the market.

Hmm. Interesting.
Maybe some lingering frustration with the Halos’ offense?
Maybe some inspiration from the CC Sabathia contract?
Maybe a need to replace his financial planner with one familiar with the economy?
Maybe a commitment to NOT blow up in the 5th inning this season?
This could be a story worth following…
To be honest
Im not sure I’d want to be entering a market after seeing what happened to Frankie, Abreu, GA, Lowe, OC etc. I know Lackeys a great pitcher, but he’s no CC and a team like the Yankees seems packed pretty tightly in its rotation which would seem to reduce the biggest bidder and the Mets appear to be watching their money after Madoff ripped their owners off.
Plus John, youre not an east coast type of guy. You’re from Texas and love getting hammered in Newport! Think about it!
I beg to differ.
Big John’s numbers are simply outstanding. He’s a warrior, he performs pretty well in big games, even though he doesn’t have the win/loss to show for it (mostly due to the lack of offense when he’s pitched in the post season). He’s been pretty durable, he’s consistent.
He’s basically a stud.
And he most definitely WILL be the premiere free agent next November, barring any kind of injury problems this year. And as we saw this fall, the premiere free agents get their money. Plus, he’s a starting pitcher, a commodity that is always in high demand. Maybe he won’t get 100 million, but he will at the very least be able to get pretty darn close to that much. It seems that unless Reagans comes in with a close to 100 million dollar offer, Big John would be reticent to sign it. Who can blame him? This is chance for the biggest contract of his career, he should do what’s best.
This is good news actually. He is open to signing.
He is not butt hurt from the ALDS anymore.
I guess I already used my Manny bomb for the month?
I think this is a non-story.
Basically, it’s saying that Lackey would be open to signing a long-term contract and he would be open to testing the market…which is using a lot of words to say nothing at all.
I hope they make him a great offer and it’s settled quickly. Lackey is a stud and he’s only 29.
I don't know...I'm makin' this up as I go.
We need to re-sign Lackey
Yes, I know this is a very insightful take.
YOU DON'T KNOW THE POWER OF THE DARKSIDE.....
