Angels Stadium - 1966
I thought this was a really cool picture of the stadium and surrounding area. It's amazing how much things change.

And orange groves and strawberry and beet fields as far as the eye could see

Back then, 'bout the only other thing in Anaheim
Was Disneyland. And, of course, Knott’s Berry Farm just up the road in BP (and it hadn’t morphed into a “theme park” yet).

As someone who's been to Anaheim only three times
this is a pretty cool picture. The stadium looks like it was picked up from another city and plonked down in some fields.

Cool picture
Now the last bit of open flat land in Orange County is very tiny, basically the old El Toro MCAS…cough….I mean “Great Park” and some areas of land east of Jeffrey, north of the 5 and west of Sand Canyon.

"great park" that's flying along. fun question...
what will happen first: the great park, the high speed rail to vegas, pauley pavilion remodel or an nfl team comes to l.a.?

oh wait… i forgot. we’re going to tax everybody and their mother even more so we can still throw money away aimlessly. my bad.

Aimlessly?
But we have to help all those irresponsible people who didn’t make their mortgage payments. We wouldn’t want them living in apartments for heaven’s sake! Can’t afford to pay your taxes this year? Well maybe they’ll introduce a new tax to help you pay your taxes! I think it makes complete sense.

although even that won’t be here for 15 years, I would say.
It would be sweet though. No more 8 hour drives to Vegas. It would kill Barstow Station and Baker’s economy though.

man
it’s sad to see what’s happened to that area. I remember driving from south county to north county and passing through orange groves, where have the oranges in orange county gone? (South of the border thanks to NAFTA)
by jtkelly86 on Feb 19, 2009 6:23 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
NAFTA
came along decades after the disappearance of the orange groves, and has nothing to do with it whatsoever. The reason the oranges aren’t there anymore is because building subdivisions is far more profitable.

WOW
That is a great picture. I was stationed down in Pendleton a few years back and I went to A LOT of Angels games, and afterwards I had A LOT of wings from guess where? 10 plus runs and they were free, but I’m getting off track. That is a great perspective on how things used to be. and I agree with Sorbo182, it would be cool to see a picture of today’s park in a side by side.

That was the OC that I grew up in.
With little cityscape to obstruct views, that stadium was visible for miles to the south as long as you avoided the eucalyptus trees that framed the orchards. One of the lost charms of OC was the dichotomy of rural farmlife with a large concrete and steel structure plopped in the middle, full of lights and noise and traffic and people and an occasional Halo victory.
Remember that streets and rooftops absorb heat from sunlight during the day, and keep the ambient temperatures warmer at night. Without all those streets and homes and office buildings, the temperature would get very cool once you left the stadium parking lot. Frosty cold, even. So within seconds of leaving the ballpark at night, you would slip from the warmth of the buildings and asphalt and people, and the smells of grass and beer and cigars (yes, smoking was OK back then) and mustard on hot dogs; to the sweeter smells of orange blossoms and tilled earth and crickets chirping, and frosty breath, and the pitch dark county roads. Leaving the park sometimes felt like stepping across into the twilight zone.
