Red Monday Game Thread
7PM TONIGHT on Fox Sports WEST
REPLAY OF: 10/5/02 – ALDS Game 4: Yankees @ Angels
David Wells Versus Jarrod Washburn
The Angels’ first playoff series win.
Count how many times they remind us that Roger Clemens flew back to New York to be ready for tomorrow's game. They say it with certainty through just about five innings.
Not to spoil it, but in the bottom of the 5th, Shawn Wooten's homer turns everything around, and If my memory is right, it comes right after a sort delay to retrieve a beachball. So... just sayin' thanks to whoever hit that beach ball onto the field...

What to watch for in the 5th inning
The staggering number of balls that would have been caught by a halfway competent defense.
Watching that game — in person! Boo-yah! — made me realize all at once that the great Yankee era was over. The 1996-2000 version played real smart baseball. Kind of like our Mauch teams in the ’80s, only with guys in their primes.
I was there
This game was awesome! I remember leaving the ballpark that day high-fiving all the other Angel fans, and yankee fans walking away shamefully.
Yankees fans
couldn’t get out of there fast enough too! Leaving the stadium that afternoon was definitely a highlight of that whole post season.
on ESPN Classics, I am currently watching the 1994 Kenny Rogers perfect game
against the Halos, wish I could watch Game 4 2002 ALDS instead
Angels in 09!
yes, indeed, I always liked Ken Brett
on a brighter note, it was fun to see the crime dog Rex Hudler playing third
Angels in 09!
This was one of 2 productive platoons in 2002.
Soth also effectively platooned Spezio and Fullmer at 1B.
Home Run Napoli, er... I mean Wooten

Watching that team
gives me goosebumps. It was pure beauty, the whole playoff run.
Give the young guns a chance...if they suck wellll...

I had forgotten-
Just how dammed sweet that fifth inning was. They tore the Yanks all new bodily orifices, small ball, homers, singles, opportunistic baserunning, every weapon in the Halo arsenal. Damm Good!
I'm digging the Serie Del Caribe
Live Baseball is better
When I'm not at the stadium, I'd rather be watching my Halos back in Costa Rica!
And I missed the fifth
Coming back from the gym, and Trader Joe’s en route. Thought I could go fast enough…think I missed it the first time around, too.
Light Up That Halo!
I love how with the Yanks down 9-4 in the bottom of the 7th, two outs
The damn announcers are/were STILL convinced the Yankees are/were going to take this Series.
Light Up That Halo!
Why do they keep flashing a picture of President Obama between innings
while the commercials are going on? That’s kind of weird.

WOK SUCKS...
I had to work late tonight, and I missed the replay of the game on Fox Sports West. Who won?
YOU DON'T KNOW THE POWER OF THE DARKSIDE.....
I don't know
but it wasn’t anyone from New York or Boston, so ESPN didn’t cover it.

I hate AT&T
Get this. And I’m not making it up.
I got home last night and turned on FSW. It said…and I quote…“This game has been blacked out in your area.”
So now, AT&T’s wonderful U-verse system believes that I will not only travel 4 hours to watch a game, but also 6 years backwards in time.
I don't know...I'm makin' this up as I go.
Write to them and bitch
Call them and bitch. Write to Fox and bitch about ATT, etc…

Absolutely.
I really thought at first that they were trying to put a good product out there. But that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Darin Erstad's Dying Quail ...
… just out of the reach of Alfonso Soriano. If Soriano catches that Texas Leaguer for the second out Benji Gil tags up and scores to put the Halos ahead. David Eckstein later scores before Troy Glaus flys out to rightfielder Raul Mondesi (reminiscient of Doug DeCinces flyout to Dwight Evans with one out in the bottom of the 9th of the 1986 ALCS Game 6—some ghosts never die) for what would have been the third out (if game events are all predestined). The Angels would have had only a triplet fifth inning instead of octuplets and a 4-2 lead instead of 9-2.
When else have I failed to see a second baseman catch a critical pop fly? Oh yeah, in the 2008 ALDS Game 3 when Howie Kendrick missed Jacoby Ellsbury’s pop up for the first ever 3-run single in post season play. What goes around comes around. Sometimes they fall in for us and sometimes they fall in against us.
When Erstad’s pop up fell in to drive home the go ahead run I turned to the Yankee fan standing next to me and said “Don’t worry. That will look like a line drive in the box score!”
This was the first time I had viewed the video of 2002 ALDS Game 4 as I was at the game in person (section 520 or 521 directly above a tunnel looking directly down the third baseline). The ALDS Game 4 fifth inning eight point touchdown (go for two!) was incredibly surpassed in ALCS Game 5 when the Halos recorded a ten spot in the 7th inning versus the Twins. Last night I told myself I would just watch the game through the fifth inning and then turn the set off. Nope. I watched the game until the end. How sweet it is!
