Best of luck Garret! Braves sign GA.
GARRET ANDERSON Is now a member of the Atlanta Braves.
2.5 mil 1 year deal. I wish Garret the best of luck, I think the braves will be a nice fit for him. He will get somewhat constant playing time in left plus he can be reunited with Kotch. Hopefully he can pull a Ken Griffey Jr. and return to the Angels in some odd number of years to retire.
What do you guys think?
Good Luck Buddy!
Linkage: although it is MLBTR i think this is legit.

No TBS
I thought the Braves were no longer on TBS? I think their games are on Sports South, and TBS is only doing a weekly national game on Sunday.

If GA wasn’t so lazy we’d have heard about this signing before it happened. Like a month ago.
Goodbye, Garrett! Best of luck in Atlanta-land! See you in 2011, maybe!
Light Up That Halo!
Sentimental GMs
are bad GMs. Good luck to GA [we have the same initials so I’ll miss him for that, and for the 15 games a year that he would hit .600]. Abreu/Rivera is an improvement.
Thanks for the memories GA
Best of luck with the Braves – thanks for the contributions to the Angels over the years.
i like the move for atlanta
i see the best part of this being that garret was kind of kotchmans mentor so maybe we can see them both put up great numbers in 09

That was my thought, too
Actually, I’m glad he’s not in the AL, period. It means we won’t be seeing him playing against us this year at least, plus he can give the Dodgers some grief. Rec’d.
". . .and the young lions will lock horns!" -- Ron Fairly, from an Angels telecast
For 2.5, I wish we could have kept him...
He would have had to ride the pine a lot, filling in in case of injury or subbing for tired players, but I think he is an improvement on Willits, who is our primary OF backup at the beginning of the season, and probably better than GMJ (unless his knees really were the problem and not just the lack of HGH). Another lefty bat wouldn’t hurt our lineup either. Oh well. Good luck Garrett, I hope you get a chance to retire an Angel.

Subbing

Precisely what he didn’t want.
by George Kaplan on Feb 22, 2009 6:53 PM PST up reply actions
for 1 year
even @3M he would have been better then Rivera
Not the point
HE didn’t want to ride the bench. The team needed to make a decision about Rivera, and didn’t have the luxury of signing Rivera to a FA deal and sit him down so GA could play one final season (assuming that he retired at the end of 2009). GA told Reagins that he didn’t want to be a role player. For that reason, there was no effort made to sign him.
Remember, he is being paid $3M by the Angels as it is to buy out his 2009 deal. A similar contract to what he signed in Atlanta would be a total of $5.5M, which is more than Abreu’s. Do you seriously think his offense will be worth more to the team than Abreu’s?

I’m a big GA fan, but I still know that Abreu is a better bargain.
by Downing Rules on Feb 23, 2009 3:47 PM PST up reply actions
I know that is not what he wanted ...
but from a selfish Angels fan point of view, I think he is an upgrade over Willits, helps our lineup with a lefty bat off the bench, and was always loved here and in the clubhouse. It would have been great if he would have stayed.
That said, all the best to GA and I hope he gets to keep his starting job. Good for him.

You gave us a lot of great baseball…. Good luck bud.
Braves fan here...
… I’m looking forward to he and Kotchman being back together. I feel happy for Casey.
Most of Braves Nation is split on the signing, but if you look at the pure numbers, GA produced last year. He wasn’t necessarily sabermetrically sexy, but he looks like he produced. Is that a fair assessment?
Oh, Bobby.
Ehhh..
It depends on your idea of production. His OBP is never good enough and now that his SLG has dropped, he is worthless. That said, he is the best OF’er on the Braves right now, so good you guys – you “upgraded” to a guy who will post an OPS+ of 95 from an outfield corner. Better watch out, Mets.
An outfield of both Frenchy and GA will be astounding at producing outs. I mean, we’re talking about 1000 outs 900 outs from those two alone!
I do hope that this helps Kotchman, though. These two were very close and Kotchman looked lost after the trade last year…
Jim Scully

Best of Luck
GA’s a class act, and his laconic presence belied the effort he puts into the game. I hope he gets the palying time; dude could still get 3K hits.
GA won't reach 3k.
He’s going to have to play 5-6 more years to have a shot at that.
He was so good for so lang
and aways a class act. In Baltimore a few years ago, I had seats near the batting circle and I saw him toss a foul bal to a young boy. An older teenager intercepted it.. GA just stared at the teen and pointed to the boy…the teen gave it up. Pure class.
We’ll miss him for sure.

You have to wonder
How many other teams would have perhaps their best player in franchise history leave after being loyal and being a large part of bringing the only championship to the team in its history and the fans would do nothing but bemoan his efforts and put him down at every chance.
Oh well, love you GA.
The only ones who don't, do so because that player is all they have:
Eg: Tony Gwynn, Cal Rypken Jr…
In fact if you look, you’d probably find that really the only times that teams stick with these players is if said player is something REALLY special. Look at Frank Thomas with the Sox, or Bernie Williams with NY. It goes all the way back too. Yogi Berra, Babe Ruth, Pete Rose, Ty Cobb, Duke Snyder… It’s a VERY big list.
I guess the question is were those players playing beyond their should-have-been retirement?

P.S. I loved GA, always resented the lack of real appreaciation and respect for him from (at least a noticable portion of) this fanbase for a long time.

most of the fans, but not all. I’d say it’s a 60/40 split with only 40% who worship the ground he walks on. The other 60% bemoan and put him down at every chance, as you metion.

The best player in franchise history retired as an Angel.
Tim Salmon.
by snowhor on Feb 24, 2009 10:16 AM PST up reply actions 2 recs
Best Player Ever?
Anderson had 800 more hits as an Angel, almost 300 more runs driven in, 150 more doubles. 3 All-Star appearance to none. 2 Silver Sluggers to 1. But Tim Salmon is the Golden Boy of Angel baseball, so he must be the best.
Um
If you’re going to look at cumulative stats, then don’t conveniently ignore that Garret also had 2,000 more AB
But somehow those 2,000 more at bats
Came in only ONE extra season???
by MidwayCityLivestock on Feb 24, 2009 1:16 PM PST up reply actions
Also, walks don't count as ABs.
Salmon had 970 and GA had 397. That 576 difference shouldn’t be counted against GA.
Yeah, I'm with you that Salmon was a better hitter
But goddamn if GA didn’t have the sweetest swing on the planet
You are correct, Tim Salmon is the best.
Kingfish – .282/.385/.498 in 14 seasons.
GA – .296/.327/.469 in 15 seasons.
I don’t know any other way to more clearly illustrate how much better Tim Salmon was than GA.
And I don’t do this to knock GA or come off as some sort of anti-GA ass as I’ve been accused on other occasions. I can be a fan of GA and accurately judge his performance.
So walking more makes you a better hitter
Yay, Salmon got on base more often, but never produced runs the way GA did. Salmon was a great Angel, but not the best. There’s a reason he never made an All-Star team. Only twice did he drive in over 100 runs, compared to GA’s 4. And despite being on base morem he scored fewer runs. GA > Golden Boy
RBIs and runs are a good judge of individual performance, as they are dependent on the production of others.
How about this fun comparison of post-season performance? If you’re going to use RBIs and runs, I get to use a small sample size since it helps my argument.
Salmon – .288/.382/525
GA – .245/.270/.395
I mean aren't a good judge of performance.
Need more sleep.
I know one stat where GA racked up a massive win over Tim Salmon
outs made.
If you can’t get that making fewer outs and getting on base more often makes someone a better player then there is no talking to you.
Seriously, willful ignorance is an annoying bitch.
Jim Scully
You guys are are losers
The best player was Fregosi. He was great, and he was the first. get over it.

That’s just rude. GA, overlooked to the very end. He deserves better. At the very least, he deserves a slobberfest of Salmon-like proportion.

When GA puts up an OBP north...
of .350, he can be mentioned in the same breath as Salmon. Until then – platoon LF’er in Atlanta is just about right.

Most “decent” major leaguers don’t have the same stats that GA is taking with him to Atlanta.

He was above average from 2000-2004...
but decent is what he is now. Notice that I used present tense.
Jim Scully
There was a decade where he led all of MLB in hits.
While I do not consider him a HOFer he was a very nice player.
I guess I already used my Manny bomb for the month?
agreed...
but he isn’t any longer. So he doesn’t deserve a contract with a team I root for because of deeds he did in 2002. He is no longer an above average player and I am glad the team didn’t re-up him. Not because I hate him – but because I want the team to field the best team possible. GA is not a guy I want on my team in 2009. In 2003? Absolutely, but no longer.
Jim Scully
I appreciate the advances in sabermetrics
I dont really appreciate the deviodness of emotion many of its biggest followers represent. GA isnt HoF quality, but he was a (until now) career Angel. He was part of of our first (and only) World Series team. He helped to usher in a golden age of Angel’s baseball. Just that is enough right there. But he was still a good-to-decent player, who sometimes overachieved with flashes of brilliance.
But with vested emotions, he was one of the best to the don the Angels jersey. I dont think we can just write him off as “a decent major leaguer- nothing more.” GA was a great Angel, and I think you’ll find yourself in the minority if you are happy to see him go. (even with the money issue, and Abreu being a better deal).
by linkbruin on Feb 24, 2009 1:58 PM PST up reply actions 3 recs
Yes, but we shouldn't make GA out to be something more than he is.
We can appreciate him for what he was to us, but we shouldn’t act like he was a superstar just because we want to.
Don't forget
GA got the game winning double in game 7 (and proceeded to give a golfer’s clap response), won the HR derby, and was an All-Star game MVP.
So because of that...
I’m supposed to think he was more valuable to the Halos than Salmon?
Salmon showed up in that whole postseason – a heck of a lot more than GA. The fact that Salmon didn’t make an All-Star appearance is not as big a black mark on his career as having an OBP south of .330 is on GA’s.
Jim Scully
I'm sure.
All those fans were giddy for Salmon because of his OBP? Have a heart, Jim! I grew up watching GA and Salmon, and I’m proud of both of them for helping to make the Angels what they are today. With the departure of Garrett Anderson, a great void is left in the clubhouse, and I think it is wrong for that to go unrecognized. Regardless of stats, GA deserves a grand farewell rather than this cold shoulder.

What we have here is a failure to communicate.....
I think what the main point here, and something that NOBODY can argue, is that Garret has been a very important player to this franchise. He is the record holder for several of the most important offensive statistics in our franchise’s history, something that earns him the distinction of being, at the very least, in the conversation of “best Angel ever.”
What bothers us all most is that even in the face of the above info, there is an appalling lack of any “Official Reverence” by the club, and people here, about his departure. Regardless of how comparable his OBP was to Fish’s, he was ROY, All-Star MVP, Home Run Derby, a well regarded player league wide, and someone who helped put this team on the map.
Garret along with Salmon were the first two horesman of the rise of the Angels as a franchise in recent years. It took a little while, but look at the fact that our team’s success conicided with Both of those players coming into their own. All we’re asking for here, is SOMETHING more than a wisper from the franchise about one of their most important player (historically), and life long Angel’s departure.

What is the team supposed to do?
Have a Garret Anderson Day in February while he is searching for a full-time job with another team. I think the team did enough offering a platoon spot that he rejected. And when he retires, let’s have GA Day. To do it now would be an insult.
Once he inked the deal with the Braves, there should have been a story on the Angels Home page. They didn’t need to immortalize him, just acknowledge his departure.

Within a couple of years of GA's retirement, I hope the Angels will have a...

He was a damn good hitter, an above average fielder, and – best of all – a sincere classy guy (from what I have read and heard from others anyway).
If they have a GA appreciation day, I will be cheering for him as loud as anyone.

I hope GA is 100% healthy and has a great time in Atlanta.
2 great GA memories
1998: The Halos were playing the Yanks and the bases were loaded. I told my then gf- If GA goes yard here, then I’ll never hate on him again.
Of course, he hit a grand salami. And of course I didn’t keep up my end of the deal … UNTIL
2002: The Halos were playing the Yanks – this time in the 1st round of the playoffs – a ball gets hit deep in the corner, GA RUNS it down and holds whoever hit it to a single. Later that game he actually SLID into 2nd base, marking the 1st time (and possibly last time) I ever saw his uniform dirty.
After that, I finally kept up my end of the deal.
"And the Anaheim Angels are the Champions of Baseball!"
