A's to stay put

The Oakland A's have announced that they have canceled plans to move to Fremont.

Star-divide

"After much consideration, today we informed Mayor [Bob] Wasserman and City Council members that the Oakland Athletics will cease efforts to relocate our franchise to the city of Fremont," A's owner and managing partner Lew Wolff said in a statement.

The only reason given for the move was the team's fear of "significant delays" in the completion of the project.

Word.

San Jose A’s, here we come.

or Sacramento A’s? those poor bastards could use some distraction from the fact they, you know, live in Sacramento.

Have you seen Jim Abbot's Glove Switch? Holy crap.

raley field in sacramento

is 10x as nice as the dump in oakland. i always joke about them just straight up switching… but in all honesty, is there really alot of difference between the rivercats and the A’s? no joke, last season i saw dana eveland pitch for the A’s and the rivercats within a week’s span.

I would love it if they just switched...

as it would remind me of the relegation/promotion of teams in European soccer (a system I wish we could foster in the US, allowing for everyone to cheer for their home team in the hopes they will get promoted to the big time).

The problem with San Jose

The territorial rights belong to the Giants. San Jose made a strong bid for the Giants before the deal to build PacBell/SBC/AT&T Park was finalized. The Giants would insist upon a lot of money to waive their rights, just as the Orioles had quite a payday for allowing the Nationals to move from Montreal.

Not that it couldn’t happen, only that there are a lot of hurdles to cross before San Jose is an MLB city.

MLB has expressed support for the A's to SJ.

I know you're right

but it strikes me as idiotic that the A’s could move farther away from the Giants and be impinging upon the Giants’ territorial rights.

I wonder where the Giants’ rights end and the A’s’ begin? How about the Alviso A’s of Oakland?

Territory

I believe the area was carved up when the KC Athletics moved to the Bay Area, and the Giants, who previously had all of Northern California for its franchise territory, ceded the East Bay and parts of the area to the South.

Santa Clara County, however, was always a part of the Giants’ franchise. It may well be that Bud Selig thinks the As moving to San Jose is a great idea, but unless someone pays off the Giants I don’t think this is going to happen.

I think you're right

given the situation you describe. If MLB wants this to happen, they’ll have to pay off the Giants, and probably force them to take the bargain as well. Why would they willingly take the risk of a revitalized A’s franchise diminishing their fan base for any price after the struggle they had to go through to stay in SF in the first place?

It’s hard to see how this turns out well for the A’s unless they move out of Northern California entirely.

At least that means no new revenue for a while.

Hopefully, the A’s winning drought will continue even longer.

My vote is for Santa Cruz

The look on the faces of the hippie trash in that place would be priceless if they found out something as corporate as MLB was moving into town.

And then when they found out it was the A’s, they’d probably even drop the nonviolent schtick.

My stance:

anyone who endures more than a quarter in attendance at that school inherits that right to shit talk it for life.

Especially if it was within the last 10 years or so. Nothing is worse than someone dying to be a hippie…at age 19…in 2006.

I graduated in '84

Plus, my politics(at the time) were considered just to this side of Attila the Hun, though most everyone else in the world would have considered me to be a “moderate”.

Nowadays, I’m a Libertarian.
