"renewed emphasis on plate discipline"?
In the last paragraph of his most recent column, Bill Shaikin of the Times refers to the Angels' "renewed emphasis on plate discipline." Has anyone heard or read anything about this before now?

who cares where it came from?
we have more walks than Ks right now! let’s roll with it!
although, we’re also the only Cactus League team without a homer right now… that kinda sucks.
Kotch would've had that.
yeah but our park is huge
and if not for 1 or 2 great defensive plays, Woody would have 2 HRs right now.
Kotch would've had that.

Tempe Diablo Stadium dimensions
340 to LF, 360 to RF, and 420 to CF. Crazy big.
I can see October from Arizona!

looks like someone notified the prospects that the club is devoid of OBP
and they all see a way to make the squad
Let's just hope that they retain their high OBP's after they make the team
and that they don’t pull a Sasha Vujacic and revert back to sucking after they get their major league contract (Laker fans should understand my point).
That comment...
…implies that at some point there WAS an emphasis on discipline at the plate. And I’m not sure I’m buying that at all.
(Not that I’m not glad to see it).
I see red people
BTW, Limey:
1-0 over Real Madrid, SANS Gerrard, amazing!
but…
0-2 just 3 days later to Middlesbrough? WTF?
I know what those words mean independent of one another
but in that sequence, I have no idea what the hell you or this post is talking about.

It means...
there’s a renewed emphasis on plate discipline. In other words, the plate discipline has a renewed emphasis. Or they’re emphasizing the plate discipline in a new way. Or the plate emphasis is newly disciplined. Or, ahh nevermind.
I was uncool before uncool was cool.
Or rather, Carlos Quentin
Put his bat on the ball, whereupon it lofted into the air and found its way to Center Field, where Torii Hunter put his glove in the air and caught it, thus putting Quentin out.

what happened?
gameday quit out on me
That'll only happen if that one prospect is the second coming of Christ and redemption for mankind can only be achieved by smacking many balls out of the yard.

My wife can tell you about plate discipline...
“…cut your meat with the fork in your left hand and the knife in your right…peas are not meant to be eaten "with a knife…put your napkin in your lap…your celery stick ‘walrus fangs’ are NOT funny…blah blah blah…”
Plate discipline…I hate plate discipline…
Walks and Strikeouts since 2002
year bb-rank so-rank
2002 462-11 805-14
2003 476-9 838-14
2004 450-14 942-14
2005 447-9 848-13
2006 486-9 914-11
2007 507-9 883-12
2008 481-12 987-11
They went pretty wild with the K’s last year, but the walks have been right in the same kind of range all along; 450 to 500 BB’s per annum.
What's interesting to note is
that in a 7 year span, our strikeout total has fluctuated across a rather wide range (almost a 200 K differential), and yet our league rank always stays somewhat stagnant…which basically means that the LEAGUE as a whole has had vast fluctuations from year to year that we have perfectly followed with.
