A shocking Bonds development!
It turns out he did steroids!
This earth-shattering news was confirmed earlier today when the court unsealed some documents and test samples revealing that Barry had on several dates tested positive for a bunch of very illegal and very performance enhancing mumbo-jumbo.
The man had his own personal army of vial mixers to make up his crazy muscle juice just to break some of the most loved records in our national past-time.
So, take away the record? I think so. F Bonds.

The last option got my vote
excellent job.

Wow...
first vote. I say leave them. Records are what they are, records. Taking it out will do nothing for our memories.
But in my opinion…
Babe Ruth will always be a legend,
Hank Aaron is still the homerun champion,
And Barry Bonds will always be a cheater.

Barry cheated
He’s still one hell of a baseball player. Fuck the asterisks.

Well, say two generations froms now
kids might not know that Mr Bonds cheated his ass off to get those records.
He did do ILLEGAL substances that dramatically effect your ability to play, and I think that should be noted for those not alive at this moment

so did the rest
Did you see the Mitchell Report list? That was only players that got caught. Bonds COMPETED against players doing the same thing he did. Fuck the asterisk – his numbers should count and be respected vs his peers.
by Sethy on Feb 4, 2009 8:43 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Well
The records he broke were of players not on banned substances. And the asterisk would merely to let future generations know of his illegal baseball behavior.

How do you know?
When Aaron was playing there was a lot of player doing “greenies”, who’s to say he didn’t?

Bonds also had a huge advantage
In that he was grandfathered into being allowed to use his inane elbow guard contraption. I read from someone that his was much different from normal elbow guards in that it also forced him into a powerful level swing. I don’t know the whole stat story on it but I do know his numbers took a decent jump up once he started wearing that last elbow guard.
by MH252525 on Feb 4, 2009 10:06 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I hated that frickin elbow guard!
No one could pitch him inside because he wasn’t afraid of getting hit and injured!

I am still not sure how I feel about the asterisks, but
I agree that Bonds should be remembered for being a good player. He put up HOF numbers prior to juicing so that’s why I think he should still be in the HOF. McGwire on the other hand, was Danny Tartabull 2.0 until age 32 when he suddenly became Babe Ruth 2.0. So if Tartabull isn’t in the HOF, neither should McGwire.

Keep the record
anyone who knows anything will know more than an asterik or a record removal could ever say anyway.
And he’s the biggest asshole on the face of the earth, and a cheater through and through. But he’s also one of the few players facing steroid allegations (or positives tests) that I feel confident saying was a first-ballot, sure thing HoFer without the stuff.

We should really be putting an asterisk on the MLB ownership, management, and player's union
for allowing this to go on in all of baseball for so long.
by linkbruin on Feb 4, 2009 6:25 PM PST reply actions 4 recs
Well if it was not for steroids the race of 98
between McGwire and Sosa would never have happened. So in a way it helped the game of baseball, but I agree MLB as a whole hid this from everybody. Now it is crumbling down, but people will forget one day.

I will say
He can have his dumb records. He did go through a lot to get him and now he won’t have respect from anyone so all they are to me are guilt records which he deserves. Also it’s no surprise that he’s done roids, I mean, the guy’s head grew like 2 sizes when he was 30 not to mention his weight and height increase.
He deserves those guilt records and all the lack of respect from fans but he should NEVER be a Hall of Famer.

what did he do wrong?
Bonds was doing steroids before baseball banned them so what did he do wrong? He didn’t break any rules at the time. You can’t make a rule and go back in history and call them cheaters for breaking the rule before it was a rule.

i agree
while obviously the steroids helped him during his career, there is no way to put an asterisk next to his name without putting asterisks all over the books. I think in a few decades there will be the dead ball era, the live ball era, the steroids era and the Angels era

by anaheim angels on Feb 4, 2009 10:47 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Actually, no
The “clear” and the “cream” were no banned substances because Bond’s personal chemists basically made these chemicals for him.
However nearly all steroids (save some, like the one McGwire was using openly), cocaine, and other Amphetamines were in fact banned when he started taking them.
The point of this article I posted shows that he tested positive for illegal substances that were banned while he was playing.

Steroid use the secondary issue
I’d just like to point out that the fact that Bonds tested positive for the steroid use is really only secondary to his perjury case. Furthermore, it doesn’t really look like the fact that Bonds has tested positive will even help the government case due to the Federal Rules of Evidence.
by HaloFanInDC on Feb 5, 2009 8:21 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
indeed. the government cares far more about the perjury than the roids
sports fans only see roids but really. perjury is more or less one of the most serious offenses in the US because our entire justice system is predicated on the assumption that what you say under oath is the truth. if they dont nail bonds to the wall for very publicly lying under oath, what message does that send?

what's really shocking
is that the economy is in shambles, millions of people are unemployed, schools are closing, the government is hemorrhaging money with a $900B bailout and we are paying millions in tax dollars to put a multimillionaire in prison where we will pay millions more for his club fed existence.

My brother-in-law works for the Fed Pen in Florence
I can personally attest that the minimu security facility there is definitely NOT a country club existence. he tells a wicked story of one afternoon when he was checking procedures and controls (he spends most of his time as a captain at the SuperMax) and he witnessed a brief lack of respect for the min-sec guards at the conclusion of a meal break. By the time he was finished, he had 6 of these “club fed” inmates on the ground, in shackles, balling like little children.

How about
we take Bonds, McGwire, and Sosa and all the others who “bulked up” and give them their own little record book and their own hall of fame and call it a day. It would very exclusive and you had to have gained at least 30lbs and grow two head sizes after the age of 30.

If any of the 2002 Angels did roids...
should we give back the trophy?
Bonds has the records. Nobody respects it. Which is good. I think keeping him out of the HOF will forever send the message to future generations: Why is the “HR King” not recognized by the Hall? A: Because his “records” aren’t really recognized.
So what if Bonds doesn’t care. His legacy will forever be exposed every year when he doesn’t get in. Let Bonds “technically” hold the records. OJ is “technically” innocent, too.

I Think Troy Glaus' name was on the mitchell report?
He’s as guilty as Gary Matthews Jr…..and Scott Schoenweis. Every team was guilty back then. Bonds should not be vilified, when other guys listed here are treated OK.

Gotta put a asterisk.
Many pitchers used steroids, too. He did break the record so he should be in the hall. This way both his record and this period of steroid use will be remembered forever.

He cheated AND lied. Strip him like we strip Olympic medalists.
Bonds thought he was above the law – baseball law AND civil law. I can’t stand anyone who has that attitude. I think he should be stripped of all his records and jailed. Regardless of whoever else was abusing performance enhancing drugs at the time, the perjury charge makes him stand out from the rest. Also, it’s only fair to all the greats of the past and future who play by the rules. If we strip Olympic medalists of their medals when they are busted, Bonds needs to be stripped of his records.
Don't mess with Teix-ass or Bor-ass!

And therefore, strip Alex of everything too.
And Clemens.
And put an asterisk next to Alex’s name as he breaks records.
Or is this really a personality/likability thing.
Oh, and the retesting of Bonds samples and the positive results are likely to be rejected by the judge, no?
I’m not nearly as hard on the roiders as some. Though if you are, you should be like Casey and be consistent.

Yes
If the government has absolute evidence as to the guilt of players who hold records that they CHEATED then you take the records away or note they did something that was considered cheating to help them obtain those records.
For ANYONE.

But then it gets more complicated
What about the teams’ records during that time? The other teams’ records that would have been affected too? Or do we just not count any baseball game that happened in the last decade.
Obviously I’m being the devil’s advocate here, but it’s not that black and white.
