2002 WS DVD

Does anyone know if the 2002 WS is available on DVD anywhere?  I'm not talking about the World Series wrap-up video that came out right after, I mean the actual games.  I know they've done that in recent years but I haven't seen anything for the Angels' 2002 run.  I suppose its possible Major League Baseball didn't deem the Angels'  victory worthy enough to warrant an offical DVD set.  Because, you know, West Coast baseball just isn't that good.

This topic seems to come up quite often...

and I think the only way to get them is through bootlegs. There are no official releases (which sucks!).

They do have game 7 on iTunes for $1.99. I haven’t checked in a while, so I don’ t know if any other games have been put up.

I have nothing important to say.

PONTEL GMBH

Pontel in Europe, but they are in PAL format. I got this info from Yetijuice about 2 years ago. I have asked Pontel if they can provide an NTSC version, but they said no. I was looking to go in with someone to buy these … I guess you can still view them fine on your computer. But, I was hoping to watch on my TV in high res. Not sure how these will look if I hook them up via the HDMI output on my laptop plugged into my LCD screen.

At any rate, here is the site:
http://www.pontel.com/

I do have games 6 and 7 on DVD, bought bootleg via ebay about 4 years ago. The seller vanished about 6 months after selling dozens and dozens of copies of numerous championship games (I also got all 3 Rams super bowls on DVD XIV, XXXIV and XXXVI from the same seller)

Hmmm, interesting

I may have to check this out. I wonder if I could rip these onto my compter and then re-burn them in NTSC. Anyone try that?

by Ando775 on Feb 6, 2009 11:20 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

that can be done

start with a google search for convert PAL to NTSC. If you have the VOB and IFO files ripped, there are a slew of programs that will do this.

Keep in mind, I don't know wtf i'm talking about.

Pontel is still in business!

Pontel.com is offering complete World Series packages for 35.93 British Pounds Sterling per Series. That is US $53.08. Note that Pontel also quotes a price of 49 Euros per Series. That is US $63.08. I would suggest paying in BPS instead of Euros. All World Series from 1991 to 2008 are available. It does not matter whether the Series went 4, 5, 6, or 7 games. The price remains the same. Essentially all games after Game 4 are free (no extra charge). You will do better buying a 7 game Series on a per game basis than you will with a 4 game sweep Series.

Pontel does not ship to North America. They only ship to Asia, Australia, and Europe. They will accept an order from the USA but they will NOT repeat NOT ship the DVDs to the USA. You can do business with Pontel if you have an overseas address. Pontel’s DVDs will not work with USA televisions. They will work in your computer.

For the Angels 2002 World Series run Pontel only has the World Series games on DVD. The 2002 ALDS and 2002 ALCS are not available from Pontel. That is why I was glued to my tv this past Monday night warching the Angels octuplet fifth inning versus the Yankees in 2002 ALDS Game 4. I have a bottle of wine picked out for this Monday’s Twins @ Angels ALCS Game 5. I was sitting in the left field corner in the terrace boxes at that game when Adam Kennedy launched an 0-2 pitch from Johann Santana into the right-center field bleachers. When that ball disappeared over the wall I told myself okay, I will believe anything! The Anaheim Stadium pinball machine when tilt, the Angels proceeded to have a 10-run inning, the thunder sticks continued non-stop, and my ears were still ringing five hours after the game. Memo to self: don’t sit in the terrace boxes when they hand out thunder sticks if you want to keep your hearing!

I O U 1xbeer or 2xlarge cokes

You saved me some cash as I was going to buy in Euros.

Purchase made, shipping to friends auf Deutchland.

I have a friend who swears there is some secret way to unlock your average DVD player to be able to play PAL formats. I will give it a try and report back — might be a few weeks before I get the DVD’s in hand, though. Not sure if I believe my friend, as I think he might be confusing “region coding” with “PAL v NTSC”. He assures me that these issues are one in the same, though. Anyone else care to offer any advice?

Advice

I’m pretty sure you’re right about your friend’s confusing region coding with format. If I recall correctly, PAL works at 50 Hz (25 frames per second) while NTSC works at 60 Hz, and I believe the color information is handled differently. In any event, American TVs can’t handle PAL signals. They need to be converted, which you can do with software freely available on the Internet.

If anyone needs an address in Europe for shipping...

…let me know and I’ll send them on from GB (so long as it’s not all of you, let’s say 1st 5 or so). I’ll pass them on at whatever it costs me to send to you.

I figured bootleg might be the way I’d have to go.

I have an extra copy of that wrap-up video.

Anybody need it?

I don't know...I'm makin' this up as I go.

Aren't there 3 "wrap ups"?

1. You have the original MLB release that came with the Fleer “Rally Monkey” baseball card. (blue cover sheet)
“2002 World Series Video – Anaheim Angels vs. San Francisco Giants”

2. A Red Dawn Rises: The Story of the 2002 Anaheim Angels (red cover sheet)

3. 2002 World Series “heaven in seven” (orange-ish red cover sheet)
MLB Vintage World Series Films – Anaheim Angels 2002

My question: Are 1 and 3 essentially the same, only 3 is the latest release? I see that 1 is out of print.

by Downing Rules on Feb 6, 2009 11:26 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I only need the complete WS games 1 – 5 then to finish my collection. However, pontel’s pricing is such that buying 1-5 is more than buying 1-7.

Just get games 2 and 3

I’m not that kind of fan. I want ALL of them. My other purchase at pontel? 1986’s game 5. Yep, I’m sick. I just don’t remember the game that well and wanted to see it in its entirety.

I even have the Super Bowls in which my team lost. A good game is a good game, regardless of the outcome.

by Downing Rules on Feb 7, 2009 10:10 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I was born in 1986 and apparently I wouldnt stop crying after that game 5

As such, I have avoided it all my life. I’ve seen every other game in the series. Just not 5. Probably never will.

But yeah that is a little sick.

Yup

Much to my surprise—I have one of each, not realizing that when the video rights went to a new company, the artwork would change accordingly.

No problem, link

Send me your info at arkangel20022009@yahoo.com and I’ll get it to you.

Thanks

I always knew that second one was out there, but never knew what it was called. Just found it on Amazon. I hope it covers more of the first two playoff series.

Red Dawn

The main difference is that the World Series has a lot more info on the Giants, while the Red Dawn DVD is all Halos.

But, yeah, you will see more of the regular season, ALDS and ALCS in the Red Dawn video.

I also get quite a chuckle out of Hudler’s interview where he’s discussing AK’s HR’s vs the Twins and get goose bumps hearing either Eckstein or Ersty talking about Tim Salmon’s game 2 clutch HR. I run that segment over and over til reaching tears.

by Downing Rules on Feb 9, 2009 2:51 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I'd take game 6 in any format.

Driven into right-center field, Erstad says he has it...the Angels, world champions!
