Matthews whining about playing time - open to a trade?
LA Times has some pretty annoying quotes from Matthews about how he was upset about how he was benched last year because he sacrificed his position and played hurt with a "serious injury"
Ya, way to sacrifice Gary. Playing hurt when you're totally ineffective is really putting the team ahead of yourself.
He says he wants to and plans on playing everyday this year and that he *hopes* its with the Angels.
Here to *hoping* its somewhere else.

here, here!
Sounds like wishful thinking, though. With all the readily available talent that teams passed over this offseason, do you think anyone would even want to pay 1% of a useless GMjr’s salary? Good luck, Reagins.

If we can find one team who would be willing to forego a most valuable
bucket of baseballs, or a dozen bats, then I say let’s fulfill HGH’s wish. It’ll go down for the Halos as the best trade since stealing Nolan Ryan from the Mets.
by PieceOfAase on Mar 16, 2009 11:50 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Sadly
I doubt there’s any team willing to take on his contract, especially in this economic climate. Here’s the thing, though: GMJr. is probably the Halos’ 2nd best defensive outfielder. He probably will play almost every day, albeit as a late-inning defensive replacement. He’s just not going to get a ton of ABs, or at least that’s what I would hope.

And he never said he wanted to START everyday...
SO suck it, Junior.

We should tell him he won't play
Then offer to pay 100% of his contract in return for him waiving his no-trade. Then trade his ass, so maybe Brandon Wood can get some at bats this year.

How is trading GMJ gonna get 3 Wood some AB's?

With Rivera/Hunter/Vlad/Abreu filling four spots...
….. there is a near-certainty of injury out there opening space for a replacement. Scioscia would probably (and hopefully) prefer a lineup of Figgins/Wood to a lineup of Willits/Figgins.

Figgins/Wood vs Figgins/Rivera

I was never in favor of this contract.. He put up those numbers playing in Texas…other then that he has been a good defensive OFer his career… His hitting is bad,and he does not deserves AB in front of any of the Ofers we have, nor any of the young guys coming up… I say waive him if that is possible, a cranky GMJ will only cause disruption.Where does he think he deserves to play anyway >??? He is terrible..

I'll take a trade.
ah never mind, his stock is so low we wouldn’t get more than a couple of maple bats for him. At least he has all that money to count while he sits on the bench. Dude has three more years left on his contract. He should be grateful for that. If he would have been a free agent this offseason he probably would be trying to play his way on to a team.

He doesn't whine as much as all of you do about him.
Why do we hate GMJ? He had one good year and then we signed him to a DUMB contract. I don’t hate Gary, I hate the contract.
If he was make 1.1 million a year, we wouldn’t care because we would pretty much be getting our money’s worth. He’s a better bench player than Willits…
by BryanHarvey'sMoustache on Mar 16, 2009 5:05 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
umm
people hate him because he took HGH, because he’s terrible and now because he’s finding time to complain when he’s making $10 million a year in the second depression. Boo hoo gary, you’re being benched in favor of players who actually are good. Deal with it and praise God that you make more than 90% of the country to play baseball twice a week
by ihearhowie2.0 on Mar 16, 2009 5:10 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hes not as terrible as Willits and....
I think having a player who is eager to play is a good thing. Sure, I wouldn’t start him but I still would rather have a player that is eager to play than a player who kicks back, collects 10 million and could give a rats ass about getting field time.
Off the bench, GMJ still gives us speed, double digits in HR and some ribbies. Does he deserve 10 million? Hell no. I’ll take him as a bench player any day though.
by BryanHarvey'sMoustache on Mar 16, 2009 6:07 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
While I have a growing expectation that GMJ will do well in 2009 ...
I think on the heels of signing a questionable contract, he then was found to have “received shipments” of HGH even before playing a single game. He started off as a pimple on the ass of the franchise at the outset and has yet to play $10M worth of baseball combined in his time here in Anaheim.
That’s why people are down on him. I am pretty down, but I am trying to stay positive. In my games I attend this year, I will make no mention out loud of how much he makes and will cheer him, refraining from booing. I will give him half a season, then I will make noise and boo him if he continues to be such a poor value.

Nice and democratic
I am not trying to necessarily defend GMJ, I just think it is ridiculous how hated he is and I believe some of it is unfair.
And frankly, our outfield is becoming a geriatric ward which means we will probably see more of GMJ than expected.

RE: I am not trying to necessarily defend GMJ, I just think it is ridiculous how hated he is and I believe some of it is unfair.
I agree with this statement 5000%. I hope he does exceptionally well this year.
by Downing Rules on Mar 16, 2009 6:54 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
nobody hates him as a person
he just embodies money and a roster spot that prohibits the franchise from building for the future…so when he speaks out and says he’s going to play everyday it’s like twisting the knife for all of us who were hoping the Soth and Arte had admitted the mistake and were content with him being benched in favor of more production.
Contracts shouldn’t trump talent and development. Matthews’ contract basically is another road block for Brandon Wood this year and does nothing to help us in 2010 and beyond when we’ll NEED Wood to be a productive, developed player because guys like Matthews will be utterly worthless and detrimental. So not only does Matthews playing screw the team in 2009, it screws the future as well.
worst contract ever.

In his defense, I believe his knee injury last season inhibited him from doing well. This season will be the proof in the pudding for that. If he still sucks after this season, then we can fairly be bitter about this whole deal. Give him a chance this year, folks!
by Downing Rules on Mar 16, 2009 7:15 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
Exactly
I seem to remember GMJ doing pretty well compared to his ’06 numbers before the knee injury.

by Clutch on Mar 16, 2009 9:00 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
You are remembering incorrectly.
In 2007 he lost 65 points of BA, 70 points of OBP and 80 points of SLG when compared to his numbers in 2006 at Arlington.
The dude sucked from the moment the ink dried on that heaping pile of shit of a contract. This is Stoneman’s worst move – and the gift that keeps on giving.

He got hurt halfway through the season.
Before July he was hitting 290-ish with double digit HR’s and steals. He was also the best option we had for clean-up hitter, and was playing a gold glove centerfield according to the plus minus system.
After the July/August injury he was beyond horrible, giving up nearly all of the value he contributed in the first half. The bottom line though was that he was a difference maker in the first half before Naps and GA got going. He might have made the playoffs possible that year, which was the whole point of the contract…
I have no love for Gary – I’m just saying that he delivered in the short term when we needed him the most.

Backin' up RGHAN:
http://www.baseball-reference.com/pi/gl.cgi?share=1&n1=matthga02&year=2007&t=b#876:950:sum
From opening day to June 29, 2007, he was 82-for-285 (.288) with 75 games, 13 2B’s, 10HR’s, 42RBI’s, 26BB’s, and 11SB’s. He was getting close to earning his $10M as it would have projected out to roughly 20HR and 85RBI.
by Downing Rules on Mar 17, 2009 12:01 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
You need to park adjust stats of a player coming from Arlington to Anaheim of course SLG decreases. You think Hamilton would put up the same seasons he’s had in TX if he was in Anaheim?
by Downing Rules on Mar 17, 2009 12:04 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
so...basically what I said in the first place.
You hate the contract. Not the player.
In addition, your previous post said people hate him because he took HGH. Which would be a personal choice and evident of his character which is apart of who he is as a person.
Make up your mind dude!!!
by BryanHarvey'sMoustache on Mar 16, 2009 8:13 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
No offense, but
Matthews was worse than Willits in 2007. Not by a lot – but if you factor in that GMJ made $10 million and Willits made 400k, then I think you see that Willits was the more useful player in terms of production and cost.
Willts had a 96 OPS+ to 93 for Matthews. Matthews, I’m sorry, isn’t significantly above average in the OF any longer. Willits ain’t so hot in CF, but is passable on the corners.
The GMJ signing was short sighted. The FO should have seen Willits in AAA with gaudy OBP numbers and figured that he could play everyday if needed and certainly could play 2 times a week if needed. This team could have saved $50 million easy.
What a friggin’ waste GMJ is.

I'm trying to be optimistic.
But if a team is willing to take on at least a quarter of his contract, I say move him. For some teams he’d be an improvement over their current outfield situation. Unfortunately, he isn’t for us.
That fabled Peavy deal which had my hopes and dreams up in the off-season would have made a lot of sense to include Matthews at a 75% discount to the Pads.
I think GMJ’s playing is better than Willits. I think GMJ could be a great benefit if our logjam in the outfield gets hurt. But if Figgins isn’t going anywhere, then Matthews should.
Play Wood.
by Jay Cal on Mar 17, 2009 7:49 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
ya the only problem with matthews in a peavy deal
is that peavy himself would be adding like 15-17 million a year to our salary and to then continue to pay matthews 7.5 million would be like essentially paying peavy around 23 million-ish a year.
and really, the padres are being hit the hardest by the economy. I dont even think they’d take him at 2.5 million.
by ihearhowie2.0 on Mar 17, 2009 8:00 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
To be honest though
Garret, K-Rod, and Garland were like $36 million combined in 2008. Even after adding Fuentes and Abreu, we’ve got some wiggle room and the move would have solved a bunch of problems.
~Till the Halo burns out...
by Zu Long on Mar 17, 2009 8:32 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
we added a lot in payroll through arbitration
Resigning Rivera and Q also chewed up north of $4 million, so we’re only a few millions under where we started last year.
Plus, I want to see the Halo’s spend more than anyone else on this year’s draft. That cash has to come from somewhere.
by rghan on Mar 17, 2009 11:10 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I only bring up the Tex deal
Because we were offering Tex in upwards of $150 Million. I think we could take on Peavy’s contract and still fall short of the TEX Money.

Simply put, wOBA is superior to the often used OPS because as the name implies (Weighted On Base Average) this stat properly weights the value of such things as getting on base. OPS is less accurate because it equally values OBA and SLG. wOBA is superior. I thought it was interesting that Willits and GMJ have identical career wOBA.

If GMJ wants to play every day, he could ask the Angels to void his contract, freeing him up for a free agent deal with some other team likely for the league minimum.
No doubt he’d prefer the Angels bench to that deal.
