USA vs. Puerto Rico
What a game! By far the best game in the WBC so far! Down 5-3 in the bottom of the ninth facing elimination and team USA comes up big time! Facing Philadelphia Phillies reliever (and ex-angel bullpen lefty) JC Romero, Shane Victorino leads off with a single to right, Brian Roberts singles to left, Victorino is sacrificed over to 3rd by a Derek Jeter fly to right, Rollins walks to load em up, Youkilis takes a bases loaded walk 5-4 and David Wright drops one down the right field line to score Roberts for the tie and Rollins for the win!!!! I haven't been this excited about a baseball game since Nappy hit two bombs in last years ALDS win in boston. Watching the guys dogpile each other was great! USA USA USA!!!!!

Amazing.
Almost brought a tear to my eyes I was so excited. Scared my dog I was jumping and yelling so loud.

I understand completely...
But you need to break that dog in. My lug of a dog has learned to go upstairs around 7:05. Otherwise he’s liable to be kicked.
Although without Frankie around, he may be a bit safer.

JC Romero shot down in flames ...... Priceless!
Playing like the hack that he’s best known for. Another shitbird player on the Angels all-time suck list.

Victorino, Roberts, and Rollins were his property but
I forgot to mention they made a pitching change to face Youkilis and he ended up walking him and giving up the tying and winning hit to Wright. But yeah, he sucked for us and it was awesome to see him credited with the loss!
What in the wide wide world of sports is a goin on here?

Not to mention that Romero
is suspended for the first 50 games of the season because of testing positive for a banned substance. Thank goodness the Angels got rid of him.
Do or do not. There is no try.

It was a great game, but I still prefer the epic Dutch upset of the DR.

I tuned in to watch the 9th Inning
Was a little bent we were going out and Romero was the one putting us there… Then Shane Victorino makes things happen.

I think I would much rather prefer to watch...
a USA vs Trinadad-Tabago friendly in soccer than this contrived MLB exhibition.

I am kind of with you, cupie
I watched a couple of these games this year. I got over the lack of attendance since it could be claimed that this is the birth of a World Cup for baseball and there are growing pangs to be dealt with (I mean, really, why don’t they just settle in a single locale for every Classic?)
But, at the end of the day baseball is, and always shall be, much different than soccer. Soccer has no physical equivalent for what a pitcher goes through each year. How pissed would we be to learn that Lackey blew out his arm for the season saving the US team from Puerto Rico? We need that arm come August and September and it needs to stretch out slowly in March and April. And then we need to rest that arm starting in November (hopefully, not before!) Unless the WBC starts playing off tees, or coach-pitch, it will always be exhibition baseball.

What if Lackey blows out his arm playing in spring training one year?
Ervin and Joe didn’t pitch a game of the WBC and still had injury trouble this spring. It’s something that you have to deal with. I see much difference between getting your warmup time in the WBC vs getting your warmup time in Spring training. Baseball needs an international competition (thus upgrading the potential recruitment pool and arguably the overall quality of the game). Having something meaningful happen in March every three years doesn’t seem unreasonable to me. Especially now that they’ve altered the rules specifically to protect pitchers.

False equivalance.
During ST there are a lot of arms available to toss an inning or two. You have an entire farm system to pull from if necessary. And nothing is at stake other than to stretch out the arm, work on delivery, find release points, and get your head into facing live batters. If things work out for three innings, great. If they don’t even work out for three out – or three batters! – there is no liability that comes from shutting down that pitcher on the spot. There is certainly NOT a bunch of fans yahooing about how any ST game is among the greatest contests they ever witnessed.
And if, during the course of that work one happens to get injured, that is on company time and is part of the risk that both the team and the player take. And it is a risk that is shared equally among all competitors in MLB. Right this minute, how many MLB teams in the NL East are risking their closer this season in the WBC?

My question is why does it matter what uniform the guy happens to be wearing when he gets hurt?
It’s not like the WBC guys are getting worked all that much harder now than they would be anyway. What difference does it make if they get their work in doing something constructive? BTW— Games that matter on the line make it MORE likely that a guy gets pulled if he struggles, not less. And the WBC bullpens are gigantic, each team has more than enough arms to go around.
There are enough guys playing around the league from different countries that almost everyone ends up taking some risk, and the nature of the game means that it’s usually good players who get chosen. And teams can still ask for their players to be exempted.
There may be some extra risk, but overall, I think the merits far outweigh the drawbacks.

Still sore with MLB network and U-verse
I actually sat with my computer watching Gameday for the bottom of the ninth. It should be nice to watch some of these games on TV!
I have nothing important to say.
