Figgins the most overrated player in Fantasy Baseball
Has anyone read this?
Calling Chone Figgins a below-average hitter would be charitable. The 31-year-old third baseman managed just one homer and 22 runs batted in over the course of 453 at-bats for the Los Angeles Angels last year.
Yet some foolish fantasy baseball owners are selecting him ahead of mashers like the Orioles' Aubrey Huff, who slammed 32 round-trippers to go with 108 RBI and a .304 batting average in 2008.

In some ways it depends on your needs and the structure of your league...
if you value steals or if 3B is a category he can be a valuable asset.
Yeah well
They are conveniently ignoring the fact that a lot a of people don’t draft Figgy at 3B. His value comes from his wide positional eligibility and, like BruinHalo said, his steals.
He is a good utility asset for a fantasy team.
My fantasy ...
Figgins hoisting the World Series trophy in a Halos uniform this year.
Blogging is FUN!
Problem with Fantasy Figgy
His steals numbers have been WAY down the past two seasons and unless you have a separate category for singles and runs scored he really is useless except as a positional fill-in on days when your regular player has off and the Angels have a game.
Its hard to hit RBI's when your a lead-off hitter....

Well, Erstad is a badass
Chone is half-badass. And plus, wasnt figgy injured a whole bunch last season? Calling him the most overrated fantasy player seems a bit extreme.

Well
Ersty had a killer offensive team in 2000 hitting around him. Also, that was Ersty’s last great season.

Figgins
The most underrated lead off man in baseball. Can play at least 7 different positions (well) and steal 50 bases. Beat that.
Angel Pitching, Angel Defense - get past that.
Can do
-Figgins has only played 3 positions in the last two years, and four in the last three.
-Figgins hasnt stolen 50 since 06
-Grady Sizemore had a higher OBP, had more stolen bases, had 33 times more home runs, 68 more RBI, played more games and batted leadoff.
Want more? I could go on. Figgins is by far the more overrated player on the Angels for the last two years.
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
I don't see how 2007 could have been overrated
.330/.393/.432 with 41 steals from the leadoff spot is awesome, period. Also, the only reason he hasn’t stolen 50 since ‘06 is that he’s missed 45 games each of the last two seasons.
Now yeah, Figgins had a down season last year, no question. But he’s been getting those extra-base hits back this spring.
Grady Sizemore is a better player than Figgins. No one in their right mind will dispute this. How does that make Figgins overrated?
~Till the Halo burns out...
Was going to post something similar.
Comparing Figgy to an MVP candidate is not appropriate IMO. Figgy is the only guy on the current roster I’d feel comfortable having leadoff. He gets on base at a good rate. I do hope though that unless he’s regained that extra step he lost last year thathe picks spots a little better to steal. I think the threat of him stealing now with Abrea and Vladdy hitting does as much for the offense as him getting caught 1/3 of the time.
Also as much as I love Howie, I sort of want to see how Abreu would work batting 2nd since he works counts like crazy and with Figgy ahead of him, he be able to take advantage of the big whole on the right side a bit more than HK.
Sizemore
is not underrated.
Angel Pitching, Angel Defense - get past that.

Yet figgins is overrated
funny how the world works.
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
And "yet" again,
Figgins is “underrated”. It’s down right hilarious how the world works.
Angel Pitching, Angel Defense - get past that.

Sizemore might be the best player in the AL.
Nothing wrong with not being as good as Grady.

Figgins is only overrated
For those who want to see him be the next Angels’ whipping boy i.e. Frankie in 2008.
Maybe Figgins is better as a utility guy who plays everyday.
Maybe Figgins should be banished to Siberia because somehow the great hope at third base will not be getting any MLB time with Figgins around.
However, I like Figgins’ energy at the top of the lineup when he is fully healthy and would not be so quick to discard the guy.
Uhh yeah
That article is crazy.
I think fantasy value and real-life value are often completely different things. As long as he steals 45, scores 80 runs and hits .280, he’s a decent “fantasy” player, no matter how awful he might be in real-life. That said, doesn’t someone being overrated or underrated depend on how one views them? I don’t think too many people expect too much from him after last year, so I wouldn’t necessarily call him overrated.
And for what it’s worth, in our Halos Heaven fantasy league, he went 120th, after players such as Adrian Beltre and Xavier Nady, and some 30 picks after Aubrey Huff.
BTW, why is Forbes writing fantasy baseball articles?

Just had to throw in this little nugget
Liriano wasn’t quite himself last year in his return from Tommy John elbow surgery, though he improved in the second half after a stint in the minor leagues. Yet he still holds an average draft position of 68—some 65 picks ahead of our experts’ rank for him—and at least a dozen ahead of more durable starters like Tampa Bay’s James Shields and Los Angeles’ John Lackey.
Oops.
