Lackey: Disabled List
According to the LA TIMES, Big John Lackey is going to start the season on the disabled list.
This is somewhat scary to think that he may be out for a while. Especially with things like this (elbow issues), there could be a flare up. I know we are deep in pitching and all this means is that the other "Guys" are going to start having to pull their weight. I would not be surprised if we struggle in April but still come out on top when the season is over.
We should get used to a lot of hanging curveballs from Dustin Moseley and some inconsistent play from Nick Adenhart.
Hope all is well when Lackey starts to pitch. Is it me or is this the nail in the coffin that John Lackey now won't get signed for sure due to his MRI ?
Come on, Ninja. Pull the trigger.

Why pull the trigger?
You want a guy on your team that has elbow issues because…?
Yeah, he kicked ass in the past but if this the future of his career then let ‘em loose. The last time I checked their wasn’t any room for “bench-mentor”.

Lackey
Lackey reminds me of his name sake on this site “Big Thunder Mountain”. An “E” ticket ride until somebody falls out of said coaster and gets mangled. Time to shut down the coaster and reassess. Ok, it made sense to me.
"why do you we still have quitlin?" -VladdyG
The metaphor makes perfect sense, actually
Lackey’s a workhorse. His namesake E-ticket ride just keeps on pounding those curves until, for lack of proper maintenance, it jumps the track and kills someone. But in this elaborate metaphor, who is the biggest casualty?
(Look, it’s Friday, I’ve had a long two weeks, and I deserved that martini I just inhaled before sharing my usual sagacity.)

Sell the Rights
I can see Tarantino making this into a movie where Lackey is a contract killer who does the hit at Disneyland.
Does anyone under the age of 30 know what an E ticket is? Cupie, you just dated yourself there.

There are people over the age of 30 who don't know
On the other hand, I’ve heard people on the east coast who use the term to describe something top shelf and they have NO IDEA where the term came from.
GA GA he's the man, if he can't do it, no one can
Hell, back in '85
When Sally Ride described her Shuttle launch as a “E-Ticket”, my comment was that in 10 years nobody would know what she meant.
When they got rid of the tickets at D-land, they removed half the fun — negotiating with the ride attendants. “Yeah, I know it’s an E ticket, but What if i give you 2 Ds and a C?”

Justin Duchscherer is scheduled for surgery on his right elbow next week
Play Wood already. Willits sucks.
Duchscherer
The longer his injury issues play out, the more it sounds like he is probably going to need Tommy John surgery – not saying it as fact, but an opinion.
2nd straight year starting on the DH...
… and he thinks he’s going to command a 5-7 year huge money contract?
WHOA! Lackey's our new DH?
When did this happen? Is Abreu pissed?? What about Vlad???
sorry. had to.

Well screw me sideways
I mean come on, this is ridiculous. So now we have Saunders and Weaver, both of which could tweak something any day. WOW.
Both of whom could tweak something??
Try being a little pessimistic sometime. Seriously.
Any pitcher (or player) can get hurt at anytime. I don’t know how this statement makes any sense, but I am not any more worried about Saunders or Weaver ‘tweaking’ something than someone getting lined in the face while playing SS. Life happens but this is just too much.

Well
this is enough for me to just say thanks for the great years. But why give a 5 year contract to a guy who has been hurt the past two to start the year. No thanks.
Give the young guns a chance...if they suck wellll...
Five post-season trips in seven years
Can’t win every year. The Angels should still win the west this year, but if they don’t the world’s not going to end.
On the plus side, maybe this will shut Lackey up for a while.
Are there any decent inning-eater types still available?
I’m not aware of any, though I suppose I could be overlooking someone. I think the main issue is going to be not getting 200+ innings from ANY of our starters. Picking up another big-name starter who may only be good for a limited number of innings (e.g. blockbuster trade for Peavy or FA signing of Pedro) isn’t going to help that much. Or are you suggesting something like a trade for Contreras (To mention one name I saw floated elsewhere)?
15 lbs on 6'7"
…isn’t all that much. I hope it was the right kind of muscle and provides him with more stamina as the season wears on.

15 pounds?
That mullet of his must be of Joe Dirt-proportions to add up to 15 pounds.

In Lackey's own paraphrased words:
“My deadline is Opening Day to resolve the contract extension. It’s up to them. Once the season starts, its about focusing on doing your job”
Well, said, John. Now go and take a seat at the end of the bench there.
Oh – and leave the ice pack on the elbow.
Oh – and stop throwing those balls to the chicks with your cell # on them.
Oh – look! Is that C.C. starting BOTH openers for the Yanks?

i was watching MLB Network
and they where saying we offered Lackey somewhere around 4years/50M and then he brought up CC Sabathia’s name so if thats true bye bye Lackey see you in the Sankees or Red Sux rotation next year
Low-ass offer
I don’t blame for Lackey for being pissed if that’s true. While 5-years $90 mil is too high, 4-years $50 mil is too low.
How about we split the difference and go 4 1/2 years and $70 mil???
; P
i was thinking 4years/60M
thats 15M thats around 500k a start if he starts 30+ games a year and give him a team option for 2014 15M and maybe some incentives like 1M for CY Young 250k for top 3 in CY Young
25k for allstar appearance
if you look at the recent past of how this organization...
approaches contracts w/starting pitching, the writing is on the wall that big john is gone.
dating back to 2000 when stoneman became gm and w/reagins being very stonemanian w/his approach aside from the tex deal (rent a vet) and new plate discipline philosophy, it looks like we’re (very intelligently) trying to maximize a pitcher’s prime years (28-32) while paying below what free agent pitchers are overpaid.
big john will be gone for the following reasons"
1) the front office doesn’t make offers or take on contracts for a starting pitcher for more than 4 years. they haven’t done it since before 2000. lackey wants 5 years.
2) lackey is 30-31, look at the ervin santana deal: he’s currently 27? his deal is for 4 years with an option for a 5th. that would make him 30/31 when that deal runs out. this is pretty close to what lackey got at the same age.
3) ramon ortiz was traded @31 before his walk year, jarod washburn was 30 when he left via free agency,
-escobar signed his first deal 3 years at age 28 and he was extended for only three
years at the end of that deal
4) the front office has seen first hand the declining production of starting pitchers after
32ish.
- colon was signed at 31 to a 4 year deal (see the trend) but he was broken down by
33.
- aaron sele was signed at 32 for 3 years and was injured every year.
-kevin appier was acquired for maurice vaughn at age 34 and he only had 1 good
as an angel.
5) the only other starting pitcher signings were:
- paul byrd, 1 year at age 34 (not a huge risk)
- jeff weaver 1 year at age 29 but there wasn’t a big market for him.
i hope i’m wrong but he’s as good as gone in my opinion. we’ll get some more draft picks
at least. what is going to be interesting is to see what is done with saunders and weaver. my guess is weaver (26 years old?) will be a year by year guy because who wants deal w/boras on a long term deal but saunders (27 years old?) might get an extension to buy some good years before he’s cut loose at 30-31.
John Lackey may be the 2010 version of Bobby Abreu
Relatively speaking……….

Supply and demand
There was a glut of corner OFs in this year’s market. There’s definitely not a glut of #1 or #2 starters come November.
At the risk of proving my screenname true,
isn’t that assessment of our situation pessimistic? I had understood that Ervin could be back by early to mid May, and that Lackey, while not going to be starting opening day, could be with us by mid-April.
