Surprise in Surprise

This is another ST post...

The eternally beautiful Mrs. Sothball (she's starting to read these posts) & I traveled to Surprise Stadium for the game on 3/22/09 between the Angels and Royals. A couple of notes;

1) This was the 4th time we have been to this stadium. I love this place. It is without question my favorite ST stadium. It has a covered deck that shields from intense sun or rain (yes, it rains at times in AZ in March).

2) This was the insane game that the Angels won 18-12. There were 15 (15!) home runs hit this game. This was due to a wind that was constantly about 30 MPH, with higher gusts.

 We arrived early (as usual) to watch BP. We should have had an inkling of what was to follow in the game. Aybar hit 6-7 shots that carried deep out of the park. Like I said, we should have had an inkling, but didn’t. Funny thing is there was no breeze under the roof behind home plate. So, we didn’t get any photos of Aybar at bat. But we did get Brandon Wood…

...and Jeff Mathis.

We chalked up the BP home run derby to the  level of pitching (yes, it's Soth)…  Springtraining2009096_medium

Before the game started, George Brett was yucking it up with Huddy…

In the 1st inning, Mathis hit an HR on this pitch…

And Matt Brown hit a triple on this one…Springtraining2009117_medium

Even though it was ST at KC’s stadium, this guy got a healthy amount of Boo’s…Springtraining2009118_medium

Here is some sense of the wind. The flags were snapping …

Here’s another. You can see the dust blowing off of the infield.

Altogether, a wild and ultimately meaningless game...but one that we will never forget!!! Surprise indeed.
