Manny's a Dodger
According to an AP source, yahoo.com says the dodgers and ramirez have agreed on a 2 year, 45 million dollar contract. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-dodgers-ramirez&prov=ap&type=lgns
What do you guys think of this(though it was inevitable)?
I thinkwith a full year in the NL(without him being manny or injured at all) he could hit somewhere close to .380.

They still need an arm or two
But that’s a pretty damn good team and the odds on favorite for the division.

He'll play with a chip on his shoulder for not getting the contract he wants
and I think it’ll begin to show through mid-summer.
Frankly, with all the talent the D-Backs have that is still developing rapidly (Upton, Drew, Jackson, Reynolds, Young), I can see them winning significantly more than last year, and perhaps even taking the division by a handful of games. Dodgers’ rotation is pretty lame.
Mexican gangbangers totally stoked by the signing though…this is basically a two-year contract renewal on their bandwagon seat.

At least they can once again name a player on the team
But I get the feeling that Manny makes the difference between the division going blue or snakey, which will make them all the more insufferable.
Oh well. Look to see a lot of blue hats in April and September, but not as much in between.

The Dodger/Manny infatuation last summer was unbearable
seriously…totally, totally unbearable. The world’s most insufferable baseball player meets the world’s ficklest of fan bases. It’s a match made in hell.
Sucks that as we’re proving ourselves to be the vastly superior Los Angeles-area baseball franchise, the media will toss all that out the window in order to pay attention to one of the biggest pieces of shit in professional sports as he plays for the worst fanbase in MLB.

doesn't chavez ravine seat something like 55,000+?
they still probably can’t even come close to leading in sell outs.
by Of Angels and Angles on Mar 4, 2009 1:32 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
First of all, no they haven't
second of all, in their ugly urinal of a semi-cookie cutter, they have room to seat more people.
Third of all, there’s a difference between selling a lot of tickets (which they do), and having 55,000 people in their seats from innings 1-9 (which they never have). Every game at Dodger Stadium I’ve been to in which they were losing after say, the bottom of the 5th, the opposing fan’s chants would start to overwhelm the home crowd’s cheers.
Some stereotypes are based in fact. The Dodger-fan-as-shitty-bandwagoner is one of these.
by Caseys Kiss of Death on Mar 4, 2009 1:34 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Whoops, meant to say Led the League...
Which is completely true. Here’s a few things you overlook.
1. Dodger stadium was built in 1962 and is now the 3rd oldest Ballpark in Baseball, so to call it even semi-cookie cutter is a little silly, unless you mean to say that it’s the mold from which many others were created. Ugly? Umm, What’s ugly about it? It simple, I’ll give you that. No bells or whistles.
2. I dare you to live 15-20 miles (or more which is likely the majority) from Dodger stadium, work till 5p.m. and get to a 7:05 start on time. Seriously, I dare you. More importantly, that arguement is tired. Every ball club sufferes from late arrivals and early departures. EVERY ONE.
I am not making excuses for the team or fanbase, there’s plenty of idiots at that stadium, but there’s also plenty of idiots at the Big A. Dodger Stadium is a very nice ballpark that doesn’t smell anything like urine. I would know, I go there for several games a year.
P.S. Attendance Figures

I'm not sure if those attendance figures hold up your argument. According to the link, Dodgers were 3rd overall and 2nd in the NL.
Maybe I misunderstood. Either way, I’ve looked at attendance figures for the Dodgers before because Dodger-fan-friends of mine have said something similar(Best Attendance in League) and I’ve gone to prove them wrong.
Whatever dude.

I go there all the time
and the place smells awful.
I do live in this area, you know. I don’t need lectures on Los Angeles traffic (I live closer to Dodger Stadium than most Orange County folks).
It’s ugly because of its color scheme. The pale blue coloration, the 60s pastel seats that look like furniture from an episode of the Brady Bunch, and the outfield pavilion roof designs…they all look like they should have been redesigned decades ago and no one got around to it. Chipped concrete, a monstrosity of a parking lot (in the worst location on earth, mind you…there are like 2 decent paths off of that ravine. Average time to get out of Dodger Stadium is about 3x what it takes me to get away from the numerous other parks I’ve been to). And it wasn’t until recently that they allowed us to stop pissing in troughs in the men’s room. But yes, it smells of urine everywhere I go. Almost as much as it did at Wrigley.
I’m sorry, but I’ve been to too many stadiums to buy your excuses for the Dodger fan base. When I was 14-15 years old, I went to a game at Dodger Stadium with a Giants jersey on. I couldn’t have been more than 5’4" and about 115 pounds. I was threatened with assault by numerous fat, belligerent fucks. I’ve done similar at plenty of other parks without more than a friendly heckle. The average fan in that game NOT in box seats probably has 3 felony assault convictions. Every time I go, a fight breaks out. Every time I go, someone is dragged out in handcuffs, covered on every square inch by tattoos. Every time I go, gangs are getting drunk by the front entrance and in shouting matches with security over the need to empty their liquor before entering the park. I’m not bringing my kids there until they’re old enough to defend themselves against the thugs that roam that park. And yes, I go more than a handful of times every year myself, so I’m not mindlessly stereotyping.
But apparently I’m supposed to be impressed because the second largest city in the country manages to fill a stadium every night. Too bad the fans are fucking morons and, regardless of what you may say, come late and leave early like no other. Go watch the Kirk Gibson home run sometime and see how many tail lights you can spot in the outfield parking light. I’ve been to Shea and Yankee Stadium…certainly not easy traffic around those parts either. Neither stadium emptied out half as quickly.
by Caseys Kiss of Death on Mar 4, 2009 3:52 PM PST up reply actions 2 recs
Yankee and Shea Stadium = Reliable/affordable/convenient public transportation practically door to door.
by MidwayCityLivestock on Mar 4, 2009 4:33 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Have you been to either stadium before?
Because I can’t guarantee most fans are going to refer to the cattle cars that way.
by Caseys Kiss of Death on Mar 4, 2009 4:35 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I have. And although the subway cars aren't "comfortable"
I am fairley sure most would agree on my description, especially in comparison to the Dodger alternative. My best friend is a Dodger season ticket holder there, if you know the right way to go, it doesn’t take that long at all.
It’s strange the typs of experiences people can have when they go in expecting the worst. I am willing to bet I go to at least as many games there as you do, the only place I have ever smelt urine is in the stalls. And what’s wrong with a trough? Efficient… I’m not in love with the ballpark, In all reality, I’m a little more than indifferent, but I so often hear people say such horrible things about that stadium,
For many of them, I often wonder if it’s a replayed memory of one bad day/event they attended once upon a time and that has somehow manifested into a needless hatred for a team that has had no real impact on our’s.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Mar 5, 2009 10:25 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
That last one was supposed to be more light hearted than it read. Essentilly you and I have very different views of that ballpark. Certainly nothing to loose any sleep over for either of us.
I do have a tendancy to get a little annoyed for the (often) blind hatred for that team and ballpark..
Dissaproval of their fans, I can understand, but to feel anything but pity for the franchise to me seems silly. I fell in love with baseball at that ballpark, so I will always have a particular reverance for the place.
Plus, showing up early in Elysian park for a catch on a nice summer day, bunch of beers, and a walk up the hill to the game is a pretty good thing. Even when I’m dressed in red.

my hatred isn’t blind. It’s based on contempt for the repeated amounts of B.S. I’ve put up with during visits there.

08 dodgers good pitching, bad offense
09 dodgers pretty good offense, questionable rotation and bullpen
i think its pretty safe to say that they’re a chad billingsley sore elbow away from being 3rd place in that division

Billingsley
Am I alone in thinking that he might not be that good this year? I’m no expert but this guys power is in his tree trunks of legs and he broke one this off season. I believe its his left or landing leg and I’m curious if anyone here has any idea if that could dramatically effect him. Has he pitched this spring yet? how did he do? I can’t believe he started throwing as quickly as he did….. But howies statement is very true, if he is no good, they could very well be fucked….
What in the wide wide world of sports is a goin on here?
by AlohaHalofan on Mar 4, 2009 2:09 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Their rotation isn't the class of the division but
but it definitely isn’t bad either. I think their pitching will hold up enough so that their offense can take them into the post-season. Billingsley has looked sharp coming off that broken knee, Clayton Kershaw’s upside is Tim Lincecum, Kuroda is pretty solid (finished with an ERA below 4.00 despite inconsistencies). Randy Wolf is Randy Wolf….not great but not bad and he’ll give you innings with a 4.00-4.50 ERA. He can’t be worse than Jon Garland. The only real questionable spot is the 5th spot. Jason Schmidt and James McDonald are the favorites for that. I’d like to see James McDonald get a crack at the rotation but I have to believe the Dodgers will slowly work him into the rotation midseason either this year or next year like they did with Kershaw. McDonald is their two time reigning minor league pitcher of the year and he was magnificent in his time in the majors but he only has 11 innings under his belt and they are all in relief.

I think it is awesome that...
McCourt got stuck with a contract he cannot afford…
Manny got stuck with a contract he did not want…
Boras got stuck with result that pegs him with another Big Time loss…
The Dodgers tie up financial resources that make them the most talked about 3rd place team for the next 4 years…
Dodger fans now have a player to pour all their hopes and dreams into, while the rest of us know full well that some point during the 2010 season he is going to crap it all back in their face.
Good times!

Just before we go nuts here
The Dodgers’ record, post-Manny addition last year?
30-25.
Over the course of a season? that’s about 92 wins.
Now take Derek Lowe, arguably their best pitcher of the season, out of the equation and replace him with…Eric Stults? Now take one of their best bullpen arms out of the picture.
What are you left with? Probably about the same mediocre team they had last year. Hardly a runaway favorite.

Manny is in LA for one season
He will opt out and sign with the Yankees for a multi-year deal for 2010 to 2012. The Yankees will lose the contracts of both Matsui and Damon ($26M between the two of them) and the Yankees will sign Holliday to play LF and Manny to DH.
